Professional Baker and Bakery owner Madeline McDougal rolls into Chicago for a "Baking & Sweets Showcase" event. But as fate would have it, no matter where she goes... death is not too far behind. This time, a competitor named Linda Smith dies during the event. It's staged to suggest suicide but Madeline's detective instincts say different so she reaches out to her team back home in Oregon. Together, they grab Madeline's Persian cat Astoria and set out for the Midwest, where they plan to hook up with Madeline to help her catch the killer. However their newest case soon proves to be a very tangled web. All dark secrets come to light as Madeline and the gang try to separate the devious... from the murderous.
This one really let me down. I was so curious to see what changes were in store at the police department after Maddie returned home at the end of book 6, but this one totally neglected to mention it and it appeared to have jumped ahead as in this one Maddie and Phil have now been a couple for 2 years. I was surprised by who the killer turned out to be in this one as well. I would have given it 5 stars if there wasn't such a key part of the story left out.
