This piece was challenging. It has a lot of depth and psychological manipulation was authentic and electric. But something about it feels off. Maybe it's the stereotypical female character: weak, naive and kind. I get that kindness through the face of adversary is a kind of strength, but it just felt a little too shallow with her. It's almost like the author didn't know how to write from a female perspective and tried to wing it. At times she is interesting and strong but not enough to save face. Maybe, with a strong actress, it could be better? Also, none of the characters were likeable. Like at all. Even the girl (whom I think was supposed to be the redeeming character). In the beginning, one of the boys is manipulated by the other and I wish he would have put up more of a fight in the beginning. I think it would have been more interesting and would have provided needed depth to the boy being manipulated.
But by any means am I saying this is a bad play. In fact, it's quite interesting and shines a light on the darkest parts of the human condition, which is always brave and worth while. I'm just being picky because I think it could have been great. But it's a piece I would absolutely see on the stage.
