My girlfriend was sitting next to me on the couch while I was reading The Quest for the Time Bird, and she asked me what it was. I told her it was something I'd never heard of, but I'd found it half off at a used bookstore a few blocks away.

"Is it good?" she asked.

"It's actually pretty awesome," I said, and showed it to her. "And it's gorgeous."

She looked at it. "That's a lot of boobs. Is it so awesome because of all the boobs?"

"Eh," I said. "Of course it's got a lot of boobs. It's French."

So like, Quest for the Time Bird is French, and it doesn't really have a plot that you're ever going to remember -- just sort of a generic quest-thing -- and yeah, it's got an embarrassing amount of boobs. The women in the story are all catfighting sexpots, and the men are the only characters with depth, and most of it is just ridiculous. The dialogue is terrible to begin with, and whoever translated it did a pretty bad job of sequencing the word balloons, so that most of the time you've got to reread sequences of panels out of order to even understand what's being said.

Even with all that, I just really liked this book. It's stunningly beautiful and there's something really untamed and uncynical about it -- I don't know much about the original series, but it seems like it was a real labor of love. And for as dumb and forgettable as the series of quests are that make up the book's middle, the ending is quite honestly very poignant and sad -- the good guys sort of win, but they lose everything they care about in meaningful ways that really stick, and ways that completely unravel the meaning of the adventure they's been on. It's all, you know, very fucking French.

Plus there's an amazing variety of fauna incorporated into the high-fantasy framework, and if there's anything I love, it's weird alien animals with saddles on them. Gets me every time.

Anyway, at its real-world, non-secondhand price point, I don't know if QfrTB is worth the cost of admission, but it's still a big, meaty graphic novel for fantasy nerds, with an aesthetic that lies somewhere between The Dark Crystal and Fire and Ice. I liked it. I saw a lot of unique elements that I'm pretty sure have been pillaged in the fantasy movies I grew up with (and one little creature in particular that is literally Stitch from Lilo & Stitch), and there's parts of the story (particularly the ending) that I can see sticking with me for quite awhile.

Anyway, that's all I have to say about that.

I was reading the issues by NBM and after I finished each one of the four, I instantly reread it in the Titan edition for comparison. As it comes to the comic book , it's one of the best comics in the genre and I absolutely loved it.

This edition tho, keeped bugging me for the digital process that the pages went through. In some of them I loved the vividness of the colors, in others I thought it was too pale and whitened. After reading both, I conclude that whatever it's flaws (there were pages where the illustration details were completely destroyed by the amateur editing, mostly in the second issue) the NBM version with it's retro warm style is more enjoyable for the reader.

Also I didn't understand why they changed the translation and the lettering. Especially in Roxanna, that they named Pelise for some reason or other (I'm guessing it had to do with copyrights but still).

What an epic tale this is. Read it, it's a blast!
The art is simply stunning and the story is really engaging, in this far-away world of 7 kingdoms ("marches").
It has it all: adventure, violence, mystery, romance, humor, tragedy, irony, surprise, mischief, and an handful of plot twists up until the end.

This particular edition even has a gorgeous appendix with art from the original black and white edition (yes, you'll notice how the characters characteristics - see Bragon and Pelisse - changed in this later/remastered version).

Well, to sum it up, This is one of the most surprising graphic novels I read in the last decade.
Highly recommend it!

Finalul m-a dezamăgit iarăși, fiind foarte previzibil.

The evil god Ramor is about to be released from his mystical prison. The sorceress Mara can stop it, but she needs time to work the enchantment, time which she doesn't have, so she sends her daughter Pelisse and the aged warrior Bragon (who may or may not be Pelisse's father) to search for the legendary Time Bird. Aided by a not-so-mysterious "stranger" they face mercenaries, hunters, angry birds and many other obstacles. A fun adventure with great art and infused with a bawdy sense of humor.

I can't help myself, but I am kinda french comics fanatic :) The story wasn't so long as I expected and could be more complicated, but the drawing is marvelous - very funny, very action, very nice! I have discovered another great illustrator in Loisel! Try it even if you are not keen on bubbles - you will enjoy it.

Read this in my late teens as Roxanna and the quest for the time bird. Now collected in one volume, this book is a lush treat for the eyes thanks to the talents of Regis Loisel. Loisel went on to work as a story and character designer for Disney on films like Mulan and Lilo and Stitch. He is also the artist behind the PAN graphic novel. Buy this book, it's a great thing to have on the shelf.

I honestly don't know what possessed me to drop $400.00 on this on Amazon, but I did get all the issues, in English and in hard back and if ever I'm lucky I'll have Regis Loisel or Serge Le Tendre sign it. Still, - 1 star for you.

Regardless, I'm glad I got myself a copy of this graphic novel; wish it hadn't been so steep, obviously, however, having read Peter Pan I was interested in this due to Regis Loisel's involvement. Honestly, he's an extremely talented artist I can understand WHY his work is so revered.

I thoroughly enjoyed the story (despite a few translation hiccups) which slowed the pacing a bit.

It's clear there's a great love for the genre of fantasy as several fantasy tropes rear their head and are thoroughly subverted with expert fashion that kept me guessing and even expanded my mind a bit.

One of my favorite sections of the story (besides most of it (especially the ending)) is in the 2nd issue following Bragon's relative minor success in securing 1 of 3 McGuffins, where he, and a growing cast of daring adventurers, journey to a desert city in hopes of finding special runes with directions where to find the Time Bird - in the Temple of Oblivion.

I loved the surprise reveal of what makes the Temple of Oblivion so . . . oblivious. If you want to know too you'll have to buy the book.

If there's one downside (beside physical copies in English costing a shitload) it's that by issue 4 it feels like they might've been up against a tight deadline and so there's some "wrap-this-shit-up-itis" which is a shame but not to its detriment.

It was an engaging semi-deconstruction of a Conan-esque Barbarian warrior past his prime being roped into saving the world, one last time. I'm more than happy to've read this story, high-fantasy I never knew I needed in my life.

The Quest for the Time Bird is a weird, campy, fantasy story that has either fully commited to its silly world, or its just unintentionally funny and weird and I'm not entirely certain of either option.

As the title hints at, there's a grand quest to be completed and the characters and the descriptive boxes really do like to remind the reader of it and every step they are taking. An old knight is sent to a one last quest to save the world with a girl he is certain is his daughter. After that, it just keeps getting weirder from the alien humanoid creatures, the many masked characters, gods and what have you. There are parts that they must've known to be ridicilous and bizzare, and in those moments the story manages, even if only briefly, to sing as it embraces its world, but there are a few too many weird, weird things that are hard to take serious even if they probably should be taken.

The art seems to be a bit all over the place: in certain pages its beautifully detailed and in others the faces look nothing like the characters just in the previous panel.

All in all, it's a relatively entertaining story that had potential to be much more. As the characters reached their endings, I was surprised to see the depth given to them. However, with all the half-committed silliness and weirdness, I couldn't fully embrace them which made me think more about the potential of this graphic novel rather than the graphic novel we have here today.

Goh... Ja...

This is a beautiful story. The story just feels so classic and satisfying. It has a great blend of action, character relationships and humour. The three part quest and its concluding chapter are easy to fall into - a tried and tested pattern that wraps around the reader. The blossoming relationships between the characters happens through the art and through the narrative wonderfully. The illustrations and the story meld together beautifully and its a real delight to experience.
The end of the story was beautiful and bittersweet. Usually an ending that is so tinged in sadness would turn me off from the tale but there was something so satisfying and haunting about it that it made the story feel truly complete.
This is definitely an experience I would recommend to other readers. I am so glad that I took the chance and ordered this.

Exceptional.

Very original and entertaining.

The hardcover edition of this book is very large, a coffee table like book. I believe originally this was a French series from the 1980s. The hardcover book contains the first part of the series, the first four volumes. It concludes with volume 4, The Egg of Darkness.

The art style looks like it certainly was from a different time (40 years ago), very easy to read in the hardcover edition. The story is enjoyable, very much a maverick among stories as this is not related to any other ongoing series or IP. Perhaps due to its age. The story is set in the fictional land of Ackbar. Throughout the four volumes the characters travel all over Ackbar meeting the different groups and cultures that inhabit its world. It was fun to follow along with Bragon, Pelisse, Bulrog and all the rest.

Fun to read.

This was strange.
I love Loisel’s style, and it was a great pleasure looking at all of these wonderful illustrations. His characters are unbelievable and so natural, whatever their breed or build, be they animal or human, flying, swimming or walking. Same goes for the alien worlds he created.
But the illustrations were pretty much it, the storyline was kind of silly. It has fantasy elements, mystery and magic, and strange worlds with strange beings. The ending felt a letdown.
The writing is at many points of the story clumsy. It is baffling, since the comic otherwise looks so professional and perfect. Sometimes it was hard to follow because of this. So much work has been put into the book I would have hoped the story would have been worked before making the book.
I wanted to like this. But I only liked the illustrations.

I found the characters in this book to be endlessly charming and at times surprisingly human. The art is gorgeous, and the both the story and world feel grand but lived in. This is also probably the best use of a manic pixie dream girl I’ve seen as even the reader is left believing she could be real
