As the children run, roll, and play in the frozen beauty of winter's day, the winter woods come alive as well as raven and otter slide on ice, snapping turtles swim underneath, and birds swoop by overhead.
This nonfiction book is intended for elementary school children. The story is about a family that tells a story of how they prepare for the winter, what happens during the season of winter and what activities they do as a family. I rated this book 2 stars because it was okay but not that entertaining. It covers the plots of what really happens in winter, like snowing and activities people can do. However, it's not eye catching. Throughout the story the theme of the was on point and lined up with the images. The part I liked the most was the activities on the right side of the book that can let children interact using the book to find the items listed like a scavenger hunt and open question to what they see on the specific pages. Language was age appropriate for the intended readers. As far as the book being appealing to younger readers, it varies throughout the story. What may be appealing to the readers are the scavenger hunts on the right side of almost each page. It's not that exciting but they would still like to see the pictures of what their actually doing in the story. I could use this book with young reader to show them things people do during the winter and add props from the story as I read along to make it more interesting.
You can almost sing this book to the tune of "The Twelve Days of Christmas." The words aren't quite right for it, but it's close. You follow along the Twelve Days of Winter with all sorts of outside animals and happenings. It's quite educational as well. You learn about different types of trees, birds, insects, and such. All answers to questions posed on the page are ingeniously wrapped around a picture like a frame so as not to detract from the art on the page and not to give away the answers quickly either.
The only holiday mentioned is New Year's, so it's good for preschool storytimes.
This is a cute book about the first 12 days of winter for a group of kids. Every page is fully illustrated with several features characteristic of winter including the clothing of the kids. The book integrates math on every other page by telling the reader to look for a certain number of whatever winter feature the picture includes. Recommended grade level:P-2
This is a great book for elementary school kids. It can be read as a simple picture book, and also as a scavenger hunt to find different animals or tracks on each page. At the end, there is a little explanation for each page to learn even more about the animals.
