Four full length Pride and Prejudice variation novels.
A DEATH AT ROSINGS by Renata McMann & Summer Hanford The world of Rosings is turned on its head with the sudden death of Lady Catherine de Bourgh. Not yet up to the challenge of managing the estate on her own, Anne de Bourgh enlists the aid of Elizabeth Bennet, who is staying with her cousin Mr. Collins at the time. Elizabeth is capable, intelligent and quick thinking enough to help Anne manage Rosings, but is she ready for the challenge of Mr. Darcy's return to Kent? With his rebuked proposal, his letter and her knowledge that she misjudged him between them, can Elizabeth set her feelings aside to help save Anne de Bourgh's estate?
REDUCED CIRCUMSTANCES by Ola Wegner After her father's death Elizabeth Bennet is forced to accept the position of a companion to an older lady in the north of the country.
A few years later she meets Darcy by chance encounter and they renew their acquaintance.
Will they have a possibility to rebuild mutual trust? Will she be able to look over her own apprehension and troubled past to see a worthy man who loves, and desires her?
A SENSE OF OBLIGATION by Rose Fairbanks Misunderstandings abound when Darcy awakes one morning with no memory of the night before but convinced he stole Elizabeth Bennet's virtue. Elizabeth accepts his proposal to save her reputation but is all as it seems? And when the truth comes out, will it destroy their budding love?
BEHIND THE MASK by Browen Chisholm In this Pride & Prejudice Alternative, Darcy and Elizabeth meet at a risque masque ball the summer before he arrives in Hertfordshire. They are both questioning what they desire from a marriage partner, and debating not marrying at all. Though they are taken with each other, they do not know the other's true identity. Each begins to search for the other in their own way, but are unable to see the person behind the mask when they finally come together. This book includes mature content and sexual themes.
This was a collection of Pride and Prejudice Variations Novels by authors McMann & Hanford, Wegner, Fairbanks, and Chisholm. 3.375-stars
1) A Death At Rosings: by Renata McMann & Summer Hanford: 3.5 Stars “Ding Dong! The Witch is dead. Which old Witch? The Wicked Witch? Ding Dong! The Wicked Witch is dead.” 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, composed by Harold Arlen, with lyrics written by E. Y. Harburg [Wikipedia]
This was not so much the story of Lady Catherine’s death, but of what she left behind. She was such a presence at Rosings and was so controlling that her absence left a tremendous void or a vacuum that needed to be filled. Anne was not up to it and asked Elizabeth to assist her with the servants and the condolence calls. Especially those callers that had single sons looking for a match with an heiress. Anne simply was not up to it and knew that Elizabeth could, as she had handled her mother.
2) Reduced Circumstanced: by Ola Wegner: 3-stars I couldn’t even write a review. I was not impressed.
3) A Sense of Obligation: by Rose Fairbanks: 4-stars “Thou doth protest too much”, any yet, the evidence indicates… compromised
*** Indelicate discussion to follow: I apologize in advance ***
Well… what was a man to think? There was blood on the bed, and vague memories of Elizabeth Bennet in his arms. What had he done? The only conclusion… he had compromised the country miss from Longbourn.
There was no explicit sexual activity in this story; however, there was mild sensual language that bordered on sexual.
OMG!!! What fun, there was this HUGE misunderstanding between Darcy and Elizabeth. I had to laugh at the antics of this novice lover as he completely misunderstood what happened the night before. Having over imbibed, Darcy found himself alone with Elizabeth in the library. He sang to her and danced with her and then carried her up the Netherfield stairs. That was all he could remember.
4) Behind The Mask: by Browen Chisholm: 3-stars Contains scenes for a mature audience, with scenes that are explicit and graphic in nature. I felt they were totally inappropriate and not necessary to the story and were totally OOC [out of character] for an Austen P&P character and took away from the story. However, that was IMHO [in my honest opinion].
I have written a full review for some of the books under the individual titles. This is simply an excerpt for the collection. It was disconcerting to be ambushed with stories of an explicit nature when I was not expecting it. I certainly did not appreciate it.
1st story: Two stars. Too much about Anne DeBourgh and not enough about Darcy and Elizabeth. 2nd story: One star. Darcy was not likeable and Elizabeth was even LESS so!\ 3rd story: Three stars. I enjoyed it well enough 4th story: three stars. Lots of emotion, too much sex for the time period, and I often wondered why people just didn't talk to each other! The epilogue was confusing and all the character had named their children after other characters and it was hard to keep everyone straight.
There is four different stories, one is repeated, in this book. One Lady Catherine dies in the first one, second Elizabeth goes to work due to Mr Bennet dies, third Darcy believes he seduced Elizabeth, this one repeated, and four Darcy is talked into going to a risqué party in which Elizabeth happens to go to. Through all of these stories Darcy and Elizabeth has to work towards ever after, some with more trials than the others.
One of the stories was tolerable, one was downright unreadable, the others were ok, but poorly edited. I'm going to go grab my Bar Sinister and read my favorite P&P continuation.
