Cuba is experiencing [early 1990s] the most difficult dilemma of its revolutionary period: Although the leaders increasingly recognize the need for reform, they remain dedicated to the revolution’s goals and ideals. Yet, with the fall of the former socialist bloc, the disintegration of the Soviet Union, and the introduction of a mixed economy in China, Cuba’s ability to pursue its socialist path has become increasingly precarious and the future of its revolution uncertain. This book addresses the crisis facing Cuba’s political system, its economy, and its society. In the first section, the contributors provide a detailed analysis of the nature of participatory democracy in a revolutionary context. In the second section, the contributors examine Cuba’s economic prospects in a rapidly changing international environment. The book concludes with a series of studies of the texture of life for average Cubans, emphasizing issues of class and gender.
