The History of the World wasn't what Valerie was taught.
The daughter of a vampire and sister of a devil walking, Valerie finds out she has something neither her brother nor her father possess:
She has Honor.
Now, she needs to flee a brother who leaves her for dead. Because, if there is one thing Valerie understands?
It's that Justice Doesn't Turn the Other Cheek.
150 years after a near apocalypse, the world is rebuilding. Survival has become the only rule, and justice is in short supply. Now, Justice has come calling.
JUSTIN SLOAN wrote video games before becoming a full-time author, with credits on such games as Game of Thrones, Tales from the Borderlands, Walking Dead, and Marvel and mobile games. Now you can find his military science fiction and space superheroes books on Amazon, KU, and Audible.com. He taught Muay Thai kickboxing and Marine Corps Martial Arts, and can play three songs on the bagpipes. Justin holds advanced degrees in international relations/economics and creative writing. Oh, and he acted in movies for a bit - all small roles though.
I didn't believe this series could get any better...I was wrong!
So, this one is about Valerie. She is the vampire met at the end off The Dark Messiah. Michael charges Valerie to bring order and fairness to the now rebuilding New York City and the United States. He feeds her his blood so that she can walk in the sun and become his enforcer of justice.
Valerie has come to America from Europe. After a long and eventful journey they arrive in New York. They meet rather painfully with the local Alpha, Cammie. She believes that Valerie is the answer to their problems with the cities law enforcement. There is an active underground using vampire blood to stay young and healthy. Those with money benefit.
Valerie wages war against these people. She finds vampires being used for their blood and frees them. She is trying to build an army to defeat her brother who will arrive in a day or so. Unfortunately he arrives as they attack the enforcers stronghold.
Michael shows up and makes the two siblings fight. No weapons allowed. Valerie prevails. Justice wins. Donovan and his army are defeated with the cooperation of humans, were's, vampires and Michael.
Now I'm off to find out what Valerie does. Michael is off to Paris. Enjoy!
What can I say about this book? I can’t ever remember ever reading a book like this, so that was different. But what surprised me was that I loved this story! And the characters were just phenomenal. Valerie, our heroine, was so kick-ass and loyal and honorable and soooo funny. Oh, she killed, a lot, but she never killed an innocent, like her brother Donovan. OMG, the battles were simply awesome. Especially the one between Valerie’s army, the Enforcers and the police… Or maybe it was the one between Valerie and Donovan… Or maybe it was the brutal, blood thirsty sparring the vampire Royland and the werewolf Cammie did before the battle.
And what about sweet Sandra, who was neither vampire or werewolf, but a human who was an expert sniper who watched everyone’s back. And Diego, the 5’6” small werewolf, who became Sandra’s boyfriend.
Wow, how about Michael near the end of the book. He was one powerful dude.
This was definitely NOT a romance, I think Diego and Sandra might have kissed 3 times, and there was nothing described in them. They kiss, that’s all. Just long enough for someone to tell them to get a room. There was no one for Valerie, which I though was a bummer.
This was an incredible story and I will read the next one. The F-Bomb was used 12 times.
As to the narrator: Kate Rudd has quickly reached my top five favorite female narrators. Her voices are wonderful and her feelings and emotions when she reads are superb.
If you like the current trend of turning every female character into a super-alpha, hyper-capable blank slate, then you'll like the book. The characters are flat and boring and completely unrealistic. The main character goes from doormat to carbon-copy of Bethany Anne in the space of 2 days. The lead supporting character goes from a servant/hand maiden to a SWAT commando in a few days time. Diego goes from a character terrified of vampires to following one around like a lost kitten in the space of hours.
In short, the characters can be boiled down thus: If the character is female, she's going to be nigh indestructible and in full control of every situation. If the character is male, he's either a bad guy or minion.
This book is everything bad about current modern fantasy concentrated and regurgitated.
Good enough start to a Kurtherian spin off. There were several places in which I rolled my eyes about how quickly the relationships went from meeting to absolute loyalty and trust, but ok.
I enjoyed Michael's appearance, brief though it was.
The narration is quite good, if a bit slower than Emily Beresford, who narrates the main series. I just tweaked it a bit more in my player to speed up a bit. But so far I had no trouble discerning the various characters and they were all as believable as the writing would allow.
I like this world, and it's nice to see it from another perspective outside the usual cast of characters. I'll give this series more of a chance to become four stars to me.
There is definitely no shortage of action: the movie of my imagination was rated a hard R for strong violence. It builds over the course of proceedings nicely. First, Valerie rescues Diego from Strake’s “Enforcers”; then she and her were/vamp loyalists mount an assault on Strake’s HQ; finally, she has to face her brother in single combat. It did skirt around the deus ex machina a bit at the end, with a convenient (and not unexpected) arrival; though wisely, this then stands back and lets Valerie handle things herself. I’m not sure the set-up here quite justifies a further seven more volumes. Yet as a quick read, this was entertaining enough to leave me at least somewhat curious to see where it goes.
Great to see new stories in this universe. You always wonder what happened to Earth after BA and company left. Now we have an idea. Can't wait for more!!
I absolutely loved this story. Now I see how Valerie came into the KG series. I'm really loving this. All the backstories and adventures. I can't wait for more.
Valerie is a super-vampire, but so is her evil brother Donovan, who plots with their father The Duke to overthrow first New York and then the whole US, [as he was allowed to do already in France]. When Valerie first reaches the States she first meets Were(wolf) Queen Cammie, who suspects Valerie's motives in seeking an alliance, as she knows Valerie's family history and that Donovan has killed or enslaved Weres, leaving his Nosferatu and other superior Vampires to rule everywhere.
To prove her good faith, who is Valerie forced to fight? What is the outcome for Valerie? Who travels with Valerie as a friend and sometime lover? How does this person save Valerie's life? Who are the Enforcers - are they a force for good or evil? Why do the Enforcers and their Masters want Valerie's blood? When Valerie and Donovan finally meet, what happens next - and which sibling will triumph? Who is Michael? What role does he entrust Valerie with at the end of the novel?
Justice is allied with Peace but at a price some might consider too high to pay, in this introduction to the Reclaiming Justice trilogy by Prince of the Paranormal Epic, Grand Master Justin Sloan - who has gifted this true delight to fantasy-thriller fans everywhere!
Valerie and her brother are both part of the ruling family of vampires. When her brother attacks her and leaves her for dead, she has no choice but to leave her home and take the long trip to New York. The world is slowly rebuilding after a world-wide apocalypse 150 years ago. Europe is run by vampires, but the New World, though it has its share of vampires, is far further along in rebuilding. Valerie has to get there before her brother and his soldiers, who want to conquer it for their clan.
Valerie is rare in that she has an innate sense of justice, something unknown in the vampire world, and vows to protect the people of New York. If she doesn’t succeed, the New World will be plunged into the chaotic Hell that is Europe, which will turn the humans into nothing more than walking food.
This is an interesting story in that it mixes a post-apocalyptic world with vampires and werewolves. It is both sci-fi and horror in equal measures. There is plenty of action, including a swashbuckling battle aboard warring dirigibles, hordes of mindless vampires called Nosferatu and hostile werewolves. The characters are likable and well developed. We listen as Valerie, already extremely capable, learns about her growing powers. It is ultimately a battle of good versus evil.
The story is performed by Kate Rudd who does an excellent job. She is easy to listen to and her character voices match what the listener expects them to sound like. She holds the mood well and the characters are easily discerned. An excellent performance.
This unusual story should appeal to vampire enthusiasts, action junkies and fantasy/sci-fi fans alike. It is a fun twist on the traditional vampire stories. The book wraps up nicely but will have you excited to listen to the next books in the series. Recommended.
Yes I love it. Yes its not all Michael but still awesome!
Alright, when I first read about this book I must admit I was abit worried. Would it hold up. Would it be good? Would I like it? Annnd I did...yes I did...there was a few spots I was a little worried about in the reading ok it lagged...but not something you could really put your fingers on and say this is the reason...this right here...just spots that I was able to turn off my kindle and go do something else....and I never do that when I am reading a book unless its a do or die....seriously. and it took me a few days to finish and I usually finished the day I download a book....so like I said not something I can pin point but noticeable. ( yes I read , and yes way to much) loved the book can't wait until the next...the series is fantastic. Waiting impatiently for the next.
Good expansion of the series, well worth the read. I look forward to how this plays out and how it relates the the other series that are being written.
I still don’t understand why authors are trying to tie their books into the Kurtherian Gambit series. There are always things that don’t match up and the authors of the different series contradict each other. Why don’t they just concentrate on writing a good story of their own?
The first few pages of this book were outstanding, but then I began to have my doubts, some of the dialogue was quite stilted and to be honest fairly inane, fortunately this did improve and it looked like this could be an interesting book
The story began to develop quite well, but then it became a bit ridiculous. Within days she has a loyal army of vampires, weres and police. What follows is all action with Valerie alternating between Superwomen and a complete idiot. It just didn’t seem to fit together too well. Overall it wasn’t too bad and if possible I would give it 2.5 stars.
Finally I thought the partnership between Valerie and Sandra was going to be excellent, until the author chickened out and went boringly conventional.
REALLY REALLY GOOD BOOK. Excellent narration by Kate Rudd (audible review)
Wow I really liked this book. Valerie is badazz! Love a smart, beautiful heroine that can kick some butt!
This book was full of action, bad guys, vamps, weres, a little romance and a lot of fantastic dialogue! Especially, some of Valerie's sarcasm, loved it! Cracked me up!
She wanted to get away and then get revenge on her brother. She did that for sure and along the way a fantastic story happened. I have already started the second book in the series.
I also see that there was a series before this I am totally going to check out.If you like action and strong female lead characters you will enjoy this book for sure.
As for the narration, it was fantastic! I loved Kate Rudd narrating this book. She did a superb job on Valerie's voice as well as the men's voices. She reads with emotion and made this great book even better! Thank you Kate Rudd.
Loved this title as their was a very good mix of details with regular action scenes with plenty of little insights into how the everyones relationship mattered. A supernatural female warrior is not new ,but making it all about saving the humans and gain some honour for the main character whilst stopping the reversal of fortunes for the supernatural races was an inspired idea. Placing it in the future with a broken society gives it a great chance to add in lots of futuristic tech whilst maintaining the sword, skill and gun play that is a pleasure to listen to. Narration is excellent especially as their is so many strong females in this story which suits Kate. She does a good job with the male and female voices as well. As soon as i finished this i was straight away looking to see what was available for more, definitely the best sign of a great story. This was for the Audio Version
I was so glad to read this. After finishing The Dark Messiah, I wondered about Valerie, who had appeared at the end of the book, and then found out all about her in this first book in the Reclaiming Honor series, written by Justin Sloan, in collaboration with Michael Anderle.
This book fits in so well with Michael's works, and, just like his writing, Justin Sloan got it just right, in that mix of kick ass glory, along with fear, terror, love, and laughter!
I'm really loving this, and learning more about Valerie and her friends, and the role she must play, in getting Justice and Honour returning to civilisation, is going to be a blast!
I can't wait to start the next book in this series: Claimed by Honor, to see how Valerie will cope with her new job, as Justice Enforcer!
Okay, battle after battle. Justin Sloan does make a reference to John Wick, so I understand how this and Bethany Anne's proclivities lead us to this. I love Valerie's battle for justice after she stopped believing in the Blessed's brain washing. I read Michael's return before this and knew he was showing g up sometime, I am just overwhelmed as I discover yet another offshoot to follow as I read the author notes. I will take a vacation here and follow Patricia Briggs before returning for another adventure. Thank goodness. And I have a life to lead around here somewhere. Anyway, all is good and thanks to "Unlimited" I can afford to eat.
Other than a brief cameo by Michael, this series has all new characters. There was a small but that led me to hope we'd have our first same sex relationship, but that didn't happen. Perhaps I read that bit wrong (didn't negatively affect my review). Valerie is very newly discovering who she is as an Honorable Vampire. So not having a romantic interest (hopefully yet!) was understandable. I do look forward to reading more in this series and wonder if we'll meet what seem like more mythological legends to the "modern" UnknownWorld.
The first book in a series, great new (to me) writer!
Do you know the best thing about Michael Anderle? His ability to keep me up to my ears in new talent, Justin Sloan, and on and on. I have never found a team that produces such consistently great books! I just purchased the whole series and am looking for the fun to begin. I'm a disabled Vet from gulf one and two, I took some hard hits. Reading is my thing. Looking back over the past year I've read well over 100 books. Thanks for keeping my mind occupied. Peace
150 years after Bethany Ann left Earth, civilization has fallen to scattered city states will different levels of tech and different levels of 'getting by'. Into this nadir of a 'fallen' Earth, vampires and Weres fight each other and humans to keep the Unknown World hidden. A female vampire, fleeing her home and Clan in France, begins to build her own team in the ruins of New York. Soon she is fighting to bring justice to all three sides of the Conflict.
There is a blend of action and relationships side by side with the strong message of ethics and hope that defines every book in the KGU . If this is the first book you found go back and find Death Becomes Her, you'll be glad you did! Vivid characters and a plot that will have you biting your nails you will love Valerie & co. I can't wait to download the next book!
Justin has tied in nicely to the Kurtherian Gambit with the first book of his series. Valerie's character, as all the rest, was born from trials and heartaches. This gives her character realism and pathos. This appeals to us fantasy readers. Who doesn't like a person who has walked the thin line like the rest of us? The plot is strong and has some fun tied into the death and gore. A wonderful beginning to a great Gambit story. Thumbs up!!
Finally we have a heroine that is smart, courageous, has major fighting skills, strong sense of justice and soft heart when needed. In the beginning of the book she was slightly wimpy but about 20% into the story attitude adjustment kicked in and she became more energetic, spunky and decidedly became a kick ass leader. I didn’t like all of the couples that started pairing up and all lovey-dovey stuff.
I was curious to see how Justin would shape Valerie's character after meeting her in The Second Dark Ages series. I'm impressed with how Justin gave her background in an organic way, and with his introduction of other characters. The fast-paced action continues, interspersed with slower sections where we can all take a breather and process what's happening. Sooo... onto book #2!!!
Valerie has honor. and she has a brother with none. well, not a real brother, but you already guessed that. after she escaped his attempt to kill her and arrived in the remainder of the United States, Valerie is stunned to find the battle between the Weres, humans and vampires. all over vampire blood. well, that's gonna stop. there's all kinds of surprises coming for everyone.
This is a good story and I liked the characters, and it has many fight scenes. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to have enough content to fill the length of the book. It just seems like a good portion of the writing was filling space more than telling us something new. No idea if this makes sense, sorry, I couldn't figure out any other way to say it. Judge for yourself. ✋🐺
You can definitely feel the two writers personalities in play in this one. Justin has a strong creative voice that adds depth to his brief character sketches. In a few words you could intuitively know how this character grew into the personality in the story. Looking forward to more from Justin and the rest of the Kurtherian Universe.
