In a parallel universe WWII unfolded differently for South Africa and the study of eugenics took a turn nobody expected. One woman holds the key to saving a civilization from devastation.
Yelena is a sci-fi and tech fanatic with a bit of a pyromaniac bent. She daylights as a rogue economist, keeping close to the frontier and watching out for hints as to what the possible future of our civilization may be. She has also been known to dabble in deranged adventure journalism, writing notoriously loony articles for publishers such as Mahala and JHBLive. She has a passion for intelligent dance music (IDM) and regularly reviews dark and brooding music for Chicago-based electronic music label Tympanik Audio. Yelena has a pair of headphones permanently attached to her head and a book collection she hopes will one day engulf Johannesburg.
I enjoyed the blend of a futuristic dystopian setting with magic and myth. The story never lets you get too comfortable; it's never clear if anyone can be trusted, even the main character. This seems like a good example of that dreampunk genre I've heard so much about.
