A Soldier Of The Legion: An Englishman's Adventures Under the French Flag in Algeria and Tonquin
In Paris, 1890, an Englishman named George Manington signed up to join the army.
He would remain part of the French Foreign Legion for the next five years.
After swearing to the cause of liberté, égalité, fraternité Manington was immediately transported away from France to begin his training in Algeria.
But Africa was not where he would be fighting, instead he and his comrades, from Germany, Scotland, America and the rest of the world, were sent to south-east Asia.
Tonquin in French Indochina was their destination, to help quell the rebels against colonial rule that had emerged after the Sino-French War.
The Yên Thế Insurrection had been continuing for twenty-two years in this area before Manington arrived, and he entered into the midst of this of this vicious war.
Manington’s work A Soldier of the Legion is a fascinating account of life in one of the most famous regiments in history. Although loyal to the legion, he saw many faults in the colonial administration and developed friendships with the locals.
This work gives brilliant insight into the guerrilla warfare used by the Tonkinese rebels. Methods of warfare that would be once again used in this area in the twentieth century, first against the French and later against the Americans during the Vietnam War.

Отже перед Вами спогади британця, що начитавшись оповідок про Іноземний легіон вирішує вступити до його лав. Зауважу, що очікував від цієї книги набагато більше: все ж в анотації обіцяють "шановний читачу , ти тримаєш одну з тих книг, що створили у світовій літературі образ легіонерської романтики" - і тут....Добре, спробую без спойлерів.
Перше: візуально книга дуже приємна , варто скинути капелюха перед видавцем
Друге: якісний шрифт і приємний на доторк папір.
Але все це деталі, закінчую цю сервенту друкарству і візьмусь все ж за сам текст. Розпочинається, як кадри з "Легіонера" Пітера Макдональд - благородний офіцер, що відмовляє шукача від необдуманого кроку. Прибуття в Алжир - майбутні легіонери йду вулицями алжирського міста. І тут в сам смак, чується оцей Атлас і піски пустелі. Десь віддалі дзвенить згадка про хоробрих синів пустелі, що баряться (даремно - на думку автора) проти французьких колонізаторів і про не менш хоробро-благородних легіонерів, синів усіх європейських країн.
Далі маємо "втягування в солдатчину" і тут починаються проблеми - автор сам зізнається, що не звик до дисципліни, проте йому якось дуже вже легко і безкарно минає оцей процес зрощення з воєнщиною. Але ок, мабуть це в мене від Гайнлайна (цей по-справжньому любив армію і свій особистий досвід вкладав у вуста своїх героїв).
Нашому герою не судилось зіткнутись в чесному бою з якимсь берберським вождем, що верши на арабському скакуні нісся б на позиції Легіоні. О, ні пані і панове - його відправляють у Індокитай. Тонкін - найпівнічніша провінція Французької колоніальної імперії "знемагає" від дій бунтівників, що підтримують попереднього правителя В'єтнаму та союзних йому китайських бандитів. Тут цілий пласт про те, які місцеві слабкі, жіночні і манірні ..та які чудові французи - і залізниці будують, і міста, і порти....
От якщо вам йдеться, щоб одним оком глянути на світогляд людини, що вірила "в тягар білої людини" - Вам обов'язково треба прочитати цю книгу!!!
Тут немає міфологічного елементу Кіплінга і разом з тим тут відсутня постійна тінь з книг Конрада - це дуже приземлений текст. Звісно тут є похвала Франції (я вже згадував), але наш легіонер все ж береться показати - що серед аборигенів також є хороші хлопці. вони є такими відразу, як тільки з'являються в тексті (бо ж вони за нас від самого початку), або ж вони хороші бо перейшли з плином часу на "нашу сторону" (а до цього вони були дуже хоробрими бандитами, негідниками і звісно ж не джентльменами).
Бої звичайно присутні, проте вони дещо прісні (так, так кидайте у мене камінням - я ж на початку написав, що очікував більшого, от воно й вилізло).
Але...от зараз буде спойлер.

Ви все-ще тут? Ну тоді нате вам: після року з хвостиком серед пагорбів, пагод і джунглів автор підхоплює лихоманку і наступний розділ валяється в ліжку оспівуючи оснну медсестрам, корисному приморському клімату і генералу, що наказав у всіх гарнізонах садити європейські овочі.
А далі ще цікавіше, щойно він видужав і мав вирушати в свій гарнізон, з допомогою друга, знаходить тепленьке місце при штабі.. де займається перекладанням папірців і дратуванням червонопиких генералів.
Наприкінці, у мене склалось таке суб'єктивне враження, автору просто набридло писати (чи то видавець натякнув автору, що треба ще кілька сторінок) і він вставляє політико-економічний аналіз становища Тонкіна в складі Французького Індокитаю і його перспективи в торігівлі.....
Що це таке? Я питаю - що це має до обіцяної легіонерської романтики. Я розумію, що бажання сховатись в штабі - це древня (мабуть ще з часів раннього кам'яного віку) і поважна солдатська традиція, але якого милого.
Так от, кінцівка якась така змазана, що хочеться вірити що все більш-менш так і було. А все чого не було лишімо на совісті автора.

Such an incredible book! That's literally the feeling I'm left with after reading the last page. While I have read multiple books on the French occupation of Indochina, and especially the fights in the Red River Valley, they were all books written today based on multiple sources and gave one a thousand foot birds eye strategic view of the experience. Manington's first person account, written shortly after his return from Tonkin, is an absolutely incredible primary source material to go beyond that.
As the description details, you not only get to understand what happened, but experience what it was like to live in that climate, to learn about the people and colored prejudices of the author and his experiences with natives and colonials alike, and read his thoughts, feelings, and what stood out to him day in and day out, on the ground and in the mud and in the heat and cold.
Whether it was in battle or in the hospital fighting malaria, he never fails to paint vivid pictures of the experience in a way that brings you right then and there. He doesn't just tell you what happened, but fills each page with a flourish of imagery, thoughts, and emotions, while telling detailed stories of those around him and those who colorful figures he served with.
In addition he has a flair for noting the history of the areas, the people invovled, and the political and military aspects going back centuries. This is not a book filled with just random observations, or a diary of what he did that day, but instead you really learn about what Hanoi was like then, from its street names to the layout of the french quarter. He spares no details, but the book never bogs down or becomes unreadable, with good pacing and excitement and information throughout.
Definitely an incredible book.

Це інший тип мемуарів військового. Книга не дуже велика, а в неї вміщено не тіки досвід війни автора, а й побутові та історичні моменти. Тож, з одного боку ці мемуари можуть видатися дещо поверхневими, а з іншого - все одно цікаво почитати про Іноземний легіон і його побут приблизно 150 років тому. Особливо після розповідей сучасних український легіонерів, які, нажаль, вже віддали життя за Україну.

Very interesting read. It isn't that much involved in the specifics of the experience of serving in the French Foreign Legion as much as a very detailed account of the wars fought in what is now the very North of Vietnam 130 years ago. Very worthwhile read.

Якщо вас цікавить історія, військова тематика та література, ця книга точно для вас. Мемуари солдата Французького іноземного легіону, від рекрутингового центру до перших боїв. Автор дуже ретельно, на власному досвіді розповідає, як у ті часи проводилися операції в джунглях Індокитаю, проти місцевих повстанців. Однозначно рекомендую.

A well-written account of an Englishman in the French Foreign Legion in Algeria and Vietnam (Tonquin) in the 1890's. Interesting to note the political climate of Vietnam 60 years before America's involvement in Southeast Asia. Manington was an educated Brit who was enamoured by adventure and he found it in the Legion.

A short account of one man's service in the Legion of the 19th century. George Manington, an Englishman, trained in North Africa and was sent to French Indochina with other Legionaires to assist with combating Vietnamese insurgents opposed to French rule. A major interesting aspect of Manington's memoir, is the explanation of insurgent tactics that were used on the French and their colonial allies. Many of these same tactics would be used on American and Allied troops during the Vietnam War a century later.

An interesting read, which had the American military read this book it would have opened their eyes before entering into war with Vietnam. The book is a decent narrative of the French activities in their attempt to subdue the people of Vietnam from Canada

A good history lesson.
This well written book provides both a personal history of the the French Foreign Legion as well as historical insights into Vietnam that help the reader understand why France lost their Indo China colonies and why the Vietnam war was such a disaster for western countries.

Enlightening
The more things change the more they stay the same. If our politicians had read this they may have acquired the sense to stay out of Vietnam. But it took the French nearly a hundred years to learn so I expect we are also obtuse.

Not all will enjoy it...
...but if history is your thing, this first person account of the early days of conflict in French Indo-China (i.e., Vietnam) should be of interest.

Well written book, would recommend it two anyone.
Four a taste of the French soldiers life in what later becomes Vietnam . This is a book that will not be a waste of your time to read.

Interesting Multinational Army
Good story with some depth but not overly detailed . Mostly the Englishman view but expressing the comrades as well.
