Young Avengers (2005-2012) (Collected Editions) #2

Young Avengers, Vol. 2: Family Matters

Rate this book
The newly reconfigured Young Avengers prepare to make their public debut - but first they have to face a threat more powerful than Kang the Conqueror, more dangerous than Mr. Hyde and more cunning than the Masters of Evil: their parents. For these brand-new super heroes, fighting super-villains is child's play compared to maintaining their alter egos.

Family Matters is the conclusion to this run of the Young Avengers and is important (to me) for two reasons.
First, we finally meet Speed, and they discover that he and Billy are reincarnated versions of the Scarlet Witch's twins.

description

You know, the ones that got reabsorbed into the cosmos when Mephisto via Pandemonium Man came back to claim them as parts of his lost soul?
Yes. You remember.
And the second important thing this volume does is set up Teddy for the events in Empyre.

description

I hate to say it, but it felt like Stature and Patriot were both throwaway characters that left me feeling rather meh about them. Patriot was a very disgruntled contentious character and Stature was so boring she was almost a non-entity. <--this is how I felt when I closed the book
Kate Bishop had not only skills but personality on her side, and the contrast made Cassie and Elijah seem dim in comparison.
I did love Patriot's backstory and I'm hoping I run across more of it in the future.

Overall, I'm loving this team and looking forward to reading more about them.

Now this is good comics, especially for a thirty five year Avengers junkie like me. The team find themselves smack bang in the middle of the Kree/Skrull conflict and have to recruit some more firepower to deal with it. We also get a couple of major revelations about some of the team’s origins.

I'm willing to forgive a lot in a comic book if it has characters that I really like, written really well. Luckily for Young Avengers, I think I've fallen in love with the entire cast. Luckily for me, there isn't much to forgive.

I think the only significant issue I take with this volume of Young Avengers is that it made everything much more complicated than it needed to be. In the first volume, everybody had fairly straightforward origins, and there was nothing wrong with them. But in this volume, extra and needless layers of complication have been added. Take the case of Patriot/Eli, grandson of the original Captain America. In volume one, he says he got his powers when his grandfather gave him a blood transfusion. Nice, neat, simple. Apparently too simple. So in this volume, it's revealed that the blood transfusion never happened, he doesn't have any natural powers, and the abilities he's shown are the result of taking Mutant Growth Hormone. (MGH, for the uninitiated, is the Marvel Universe's version of steroids. Except that, instead of getting you on the Yankees, it can get you on the Avengers.) Or Hulkling. In the first volume, a mutant. Here, the half-Kree, half-Skrull son of the deceased Captain Marvel. Let's not even get into Billy's backstory.

But I love these characters, and overly complicated backstories aside, the writing is solid and delivers a fun story. Bonus points to Kate for getting to call Captain America out: did he really think that nothing bad would come of trying to bar a group of highly motivated teens who (mostly) have superpowers from being heroes?

What an amazing run, they hold nothing back connecting this kids to the Marvel Universe, they really shine one by one and they don’t feel like sidekicks per se.

A great volume, this continues the story where we learn Eli doesn't really have powers and he has been taking MGH and so we get the fallout of that and what the Avengers think of him then and how his team response and a good threat in Mr Hyde, a special chapter where Young Avengers are talking with Jess and telling her their motive of becoming hero and then comes the big part where the Skrulls and Kree both appear to take back Hulkling as we learn he is the son of Mar-Vell and Princess Anelle and its a great story and shifts the intensity to high gear and so many revelations happen, also the real heritage of Wiccan and his twin brother Speed and there is such an epic battle where the Avengers/YA unite to fight these aliens and wow just epic writing, stakes are high, revelations happen and the art is high-octane and thrilling and overall just a blast to read and YA continue their adventure next volume!

I can't for the life of me figure out why this title was canned? This was great.

First two issues focus on Patriot and his story. Finding out maybe he's not so much like his grandpa in the end. It's pretty touching, and brutally sad at points. Then we get the second half of the story which is mostly about Hulking and his "destiny" being two different races. The Kree and the Skrull come to take what they think is there's. We also get some new members here, background on Kate and the rest, and overall just some really great stuff.

These kids feel real. That's the biggest plus to it all. Almost more family but working together as a unit. Better than most do, and the best I read since maybe New Warriors back in the 90s. I really dig them all together, the storylines are fun and exciting, and the only negative is that it ends here the main first run. It's not fair!

A 4.5 out of 5.

Yeah, the first run of this team really doesn't measure up to the 2012 run. It was a lot less... fearless?

Aside from the issues I have with the only black guy being the one that needed super drugs to "be a hero", it just wasn't anywhere near as fun or engaging as the 2012 run. I used to commend this one for being the only one in which Billy and Tommy looked like twins but... honestly, everyone kind of looked the same? Save for Cap and Eli, I felt like Cassie and Kate both looked like they could have been related to Tommy and Billy. Their features were so similar.

I didn't love that it culminated in Eli's lie coming true. It felt like a "be careful what you wish for" thing. And I didn't realize until rereading but... this book never used the word gay? Billy accidentally comes out of the closet but they never actually have him say the word "gay". Contrasted with the 2012 run where we have America, a lesbian, David explicitly saying that he's "bi" and Billy and Teddy actually getting to kiss... this book seems like Marvel wouldn't allow anything but a vague hint at homosexuality. The most we get is Cassie calling Teddy Billy's boyfriend.

Anyway, I still like seeing where the team started. There are some great fight sequences. Children's Crusade, as a whole, is stronger than both of these volumes. It is interesting that this team only got 2 volumes, Children's Crusade and then a tie in book for the Civil War arc before they disappeared until 2012.

Though, I must say, the only thing this run had that I missed in 2012 was Cassie Lang. All in all, I enjoyed that run 10x more.

I really wish this series had been longer. It's a whole lot of fun. It's the kids trying to do the Avengers their own way with Cap and Iron Man trying to put a stop to it. We find out the real deal with both Patriot, Hulking and Wiccan in this volume. I love how expectations were subverted. Jim Cheung and Andrea Di Vito's art is excellent.

Dessa forma, a equipe é bem divertida e a leitura vale a pena. Se você gosta de equipes de heróis compostas por heróis adolescentes, você vai se divertir demais com a leitura.

Great continuation from V. 1. I started to feel like it was losing focus with the Teddy origin stuff, but t was wrapped up and connected nicely by the end. It does seem like a really weird place to end the title though!

The new, inexperienced group of heroes from first volume get some interesting character development -- they certainly feel much more like kids in this volume, where they have to deal with reasonably-concerned adults and parent issues (some of them more than others.) The gratuitous fight scenes come across a bit awkward, though, and the tendency for important revelations to show up out of context is a bit overused as a plot device.

This series was so much fun! I'm sad it was only these two volumes because i really did enjoy them and would have liked to see more. I also quite enjoyed the Young Avengers special that was included as part of this volume.

I adored the characters, Kate Bishop is one of my favourite marvel characters of all time so i loved her in this. The other Young Avengers are great as well and are all so unique and interesting.

The plot in this volume was action packed and i preferred the plot in this volume over volume 1. At times the plot didn't flow as nicely as it could have but it was still easy to follow and interesting.

I'm so glad I read this series, it wasn't perfect but it was a lot of fun!

This was absolutely excellent, the only downside was some of the art in the Special included in this volume. It felt like the fun and craziness of superheroing and at the same time it felt modern and with the times it was written. I love the focus on Hulking and since Mar-Vell is a favorite of mine it really makes it great and I absolutely geekily LOVE the last panel and several other 2 pagers in the last issue.

Dammit I just love this series. The characters are fun and have complicated relationships with each other and it's just so good. I cannot wait to reread both of the volumes and get the next volume. The art style is great and the stories are interesting just wow.

Reread: 7/5/16
Love this series. A fun quick reread with some really good character. MCU take notes for the future. Also Wickling for life.

I preferred this volume to volume 1 because of the plot. It helped that all of the characters had already been introduced, so there was more space for progressing the story, as well as developing the characters to give them more depth than they had I volume 1. The art was, of course, incredible.

Guys it's Mephisto.

In this volume we do get the other twin, Speed and learn more about how the twins came to be. The Avengers still don't approve of the Young Avengers but when a super skrull comes for the Hulking, it turns into a full out Kree / Skrull war on Earth. Apparently Hulking is both and also a prince but he doesn't want to leave his new found family to go with either of them.

I love the team, they went together so well and I loved how to felt like we got enough personality from each instead of anyone being a background character. It was so funny how the new Vision joined them like I get it but it just felt weird??? Also big fan that they had more than one girl. Normally we out here having Smurfette energy. (Even the Avengers team in this currently only had one lady?? lol)

Also am I dumb because I thought the whole thing was the Avengers disbanded but they sure as shit did not? They really be hanging out in the Avengers tower... going on missions?

The Avengers came in and they all had to fight together and it was really cool but I couldn't really see wtf was happening on the full pages of them all fighting.

This was a nice solid quick run though!

I absolutely loved the new Young Avengers series, so I really wanted to go back right to the beginning of the YA story and start with the first story!

I didn't know what to expect with this but I really enjoyed it! It's a different set of Young Avengers than I'm used to - Eli Bradley, Cassie Lang, Iron Lad and Vision are there instead of America Chavez, David Allayne and Noh-Varr, so it was interesting to see a slightly different dynamic. It also made the start of YA 2014 make a lot more sense, so that was great!

Both Vol 1 and Vol 2 both had really interesting stories, seeing everyone's back stories in Vol 2 was great, especially Teddy and Eli! I think overall I preferred the arc of Vol 1 to Vol 2, but only by a little bit, they were both really great!

I'm excited to carry on with all the YA arcs - going into their Civil War run next, then onto YA Presents and see where I go from there!

I really enjoyed this volume and felt like a better introduction to the group than the first volume. I would say the first volume was more of an Iron Lad book. This one featured all the members and got into their backstories. The special issue, with all the different art styles, really stuck out to me. There was also some great action.

This actually ended up being a really good read. It definitely had some slow, down moments, but on the whole, it was really great storytelling with an ending that just went from strength to strength. Learning more about the Young Avengers was fun, too.
