Before the lights went out, Scott Keller was just another single father, working a job he liked and spending time as he could with his daughter, Isabella. Sure, he had his share of nightmares, but he went to work and did his duty as best he knew how while trying to make the memories of the Green Hell go away,.
Then the lights went out, and everything changed. His family fought to save who they could, and what they could, but with the growing hunger, the forces of chaos and disorder threatened everything he held dear. Scott Keller was just a man, and he was facing the worst odds of his life. Just how much of his humanity was Scott willing to sacrifice to insure the survival of his family and the people he loved?
Lines in Shadow is the latest book in the Walking in the Rain series. With a special thanks from the author to Sabrina Jean and Tina Watson for bringing this book to life. This book is intended for mature audiences, with scenes unsuitable for children.
William Allen was born and raised in the Piney Woods of Southeast Texas, a place of great natural beauty and a scarcity of decent paying jobs. Growing up on a farm, he dreamed of one day finding one of those jobs involving working indoors and enjoying air conditioned comfort. Most of the farm work was outdoors, rain or shine, and air conditioning was something he read about in books. They even talked about something he'd only dreamed of before, something to do with health insurance. No, that was probably just science fiction.
Books were a refuge for young William, and as he grew older, he decided to try his hand at creating his own fantasy worlds. To his way of thinking, writing seemed to involve way more "brain sweat" that the other kind. So far, so good. And at least the air conditioning still works.
"Walking in the Rain" started as a short story and over time developed into a series of novels exploring the changed world a young man who finds himself stranded far from home when the lights go out. Everywhere.
Luke is a capable survivor who quickly hardens his heart in order to live a day-to-day existence while making a seemingly hopeless trek home to his family. Along the way, Luke meets someone special who helps him rediscover his lost humanity. Make no mistake, though. Luke learned to be a cold-blooded killer to survive, and having something to lose merely makes him all the more vicious when he is forced to act.
To date, the first three books, "Walking in the Rain: Surviving the Fall", "Home Fires Burning", and "Hard Rain Falling" have been published exclusively here on Amazon. Book Four in the series, "Dark Sky Thunder" will be released in September, 2015. These first three titles are all now available in audiobook form from Audible.com. The incomparable Pat Young provides the dramatic readings for these books and adds an extra dimension to these powerful stories.
Also, the short story "Hunger Driven" will shortly be joined by a full length zombie novel currently in production, entitled "A Feast for Crows". The sixty plus page tale represents the author's own take on the Zombie Apocalypse in Southeast Texas and is a jumping off point for the forthcoming full length novel. The scenery is still pretty except for all those nasty walking corpses littering the landscape.
The author is proud to have contributed a short story, "'Ware, Goblins" for the recently released zombie anthology "Bite Sized Offerings." This collection of stories represents a lineup of the best talent in the horror business, and I can only assume they included me by accident. Oh, well, it was my gain, after all.

Scott Keller is working hard with the rest of his family and those who have joined them on the farm to survive in this post pulse dystopian world. New threats to his humanity seem to keep coming no matter how well they try to protect themselves. It seems that one faction of the remaining government has gone off the deep end and is in bed with the worst of mankind. What horrors must the Keller’s eradicate to stay alive and establish a new society?
Allen’s sixth book in the Walking in the Rain series, Lines in Shadow, concentrates on the Keller farm and the area immediately impacting it. The story is told from Scott’s point of view and really brings out the depth of his character. As he faces the spawns of Hell he must fight his own inner demons.
While I loved the story and can’t wait for the next installment, this book contained an unusual number of typos and failed to address a couple of points that left you hanging. Hopefully, when you read the book the typos will have been corrected. **Possible SPOILERS** What was Katrina’s ultimate fate? Maybe I missed that somehow. And, what about the drones? Their final disposition wasn’t addressed.
Know I am a bit late to the Show in reading these (2016-2020) but I have REALLY Loved them!
These books have touched my heart in a way that so many of the apocalypse novels have failed to do. I really feel like a lot of that has to do with how family and their children figure so strongly in the storylines. These books give me so much hope for the future of our country despite the rough time right now with the ever worsening pandemic and the rough state of racial relations... I can only hope there are still enough Americans who care enough to pull America back to her feet if she stumbles and falters... Even at the ripe old age of 68, I will be in there pitching and slugging. My grandson gets back to the USA after several tour in the Army in Germany...She is a bit tattered and tired but still the grand old country that my family and I have loved for so very many generations. I am only hope she will have the patriots t her side to help her weather the next 250+ years. God bless America!
The first books were violent but I enjoyed the character of Luke. But these last two books keep getting more violent and extremely gory. Every other page is about cannibalism describing it on great detail. It too much. All the raping and murders of children and then descriptions of them getting cut up, cooked then eaten. I can’t read anymore. It’s terrible and I won’t recommend this series to anyone.
I loved all of the books, and I assumed there would be one bringing the 3 stories together. No. The series is great and just know that it really is the story of three men. Obviously if this connection was going to happen, it already would have happened. Guess I'll have to live with that! Do read all the books though.
Remaining Human Amongst the Necessary Horrors that need to be undertaken
Awesome adventure and deep dive character development. And, showcasing human resilience after traumatic suffering. Time heals all wounds, especially if you get to kill those who are committing the same horrific things done to you.
Write faster! These books are awesome . I usually leave a rating but seldom write reviews but I've really enjoyed this series. These are definitely can't put down books I've read each and every one strait through.
One of my favorite series in prepper/survival genre
Would recommend all of the books in the series wholeheartedly. While the Luke and Amy books trend towards my preferred of the series, I always reread all of the books equally.
Good story, I enjoyed it. Often, I want to comment on something in a story and by the time I get to the comments I've forgotten it. Not this time. The second sign of getting old is forgetting things. "What is the first", you ask? The answer is "I don't remember."
This is a great storyline of the other group that was mentioned earlier in a previous book. This book is a " must read" for those that enjoy adventure stories.
This one was lest focused on how the people work to survive and more on a chain of military/para-military operations. A few homages to the absent super-Luke thrown in. I wanted to like Scott but he was awfully one dimensional with not a lot of good fuzzies even with his daughter.
Well written. We jump away from Luke Messner again to follow the events of the Keller group. Scott Keller is a marine veteran who has been through hell. He puts himself through more to keep the people in his area of Arkansas safe. More of the DHS plot is revealed and it's bad. Great writing, but some sections are not for the teenage or younger reader.
Another fantastic addition to the 'Walking In The Rain' series by William Allen!
If you haven't started this series, get going. If you have, then you'll remember our initial encounters with Scott Keller as he meets and helps Luke on his way home. But his own story continues!
This is a book that expounds on Scott Keller's life, hopes, and fears..... His daughter is his reason for existing and the now violent world holds more threats to her survival than safety. He will be asked and will do whatever he can to try to keep a safe environment for his only child. A parent's determination is unfailing.....but will it be enough? The horrors are real and Scott Keller is standing in their path.
An exciting and non-action tale worth the read. It adds to the series and leaves the reader wanting more! Highly recommended and very well done!
This series takes you beyond a catastrophic event and temporary survival, to total societal and government breakdown, with elegant description, innovative and believable escape and evasion, and communities learning to survive together. Engaging writing and story line, well researched. HOWEVER, the editing fails in multiple word errors, lack of clarity throughout all of the series. It is most distracting when you must read a phrase several time to determine the intended meaning. Some of this is likely due to dictation software, perhaps the equipment used.
I felt like I was right there with them all, fighting to protect all those I cared about. Pulled me in and kept me well entertained throughout. Highly recommend.
Great story, grisly at times, but fits perfectly with the flow of the situations and characters. I sure wouldn't want to live during such a time. I can't wait for the next and final book!
