Tess Thompson Romance...hometowns and heartstrings.
Tess Thompson is the USA Today Bestselling and award-winning author of contemporary and historical Romantic Women’s Fiction with over 60 published titles. When asked to describe her books, she could never figure out what to say that would perfectly sum them up until she landed on, Hometowns and Heartstrings.
She’s married to her prince, Best Husband Ever, and is the mother of their blended family of four kids and five cats. Best Husband Ever is seventeen months younger, which qualifies Tess as a Cougar, a title she wears proudly. Her Bonus Sons are young adults with pretty hair and big brains like their dad. Daughters, better known as Princess One and Two, are teenagers who make their mama proud because they’re kind. They’re also smart, but a mother shouldn’t brag.
Tess loves lazy afternoons watching football, hanging out on the back patio with Best Husband Ever, reading in bed, binge-watching television series, red wine, strong coffee and walks on crisp autumn days. She laughs a little too loudly, never knows what to make for dinner, looks ridiculous kickboxing in an attempt to combat her muffin top, and always complains about the rain even though she chose to live in Seattle.
She’s proud to have grown up in a small town like the ones in her novels. After graduating from the University of Southern California Drama School, she had hopes of becoming an actress but was called instead to writing fiction. She’s grateful to spend most days in her office matchmaking her characters while her favorite cat Mittens (shhh…don’t tell the others) sleeps on the desk.
She adores hearing from readers, so don’t hesitate to say hello or sign up for her newsletter: http://tesswrites.com/. You’ll receive an ebook copy of her novella, The Santa Trial, for your efforts.
Blue Midnight by Tess Thompson is 2014 publication. I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This novel had me from the the first page. I thought this book was in the Women's Fiction category and it starts off with that kind of format, but it keeps changing as you continue reading. Blythe is in her mid forties, divorced, has two young daughters, and is trying to get her life back in order and discover what path she will take now that she is single again. Enter Blythe's younger sister, Bliss. Yes, they have a hippie mother, which explains the names. Blythe's ex-husband is getting remarried and wants to take their daughters on the honeymoon with him and his new wife. Blythe will have three weeks to herself and Bliss decides it's time she took a vacation. She gets the idea to arrange a stay in Idaho based on the story Blythe tells her about meeting a man named Finn a short time before her marriage. She happened to find Finn's phone number and she is thinking about looking him up. Bliss pushes her in that direction, and from that point on this book takes off in an entirely different direction.
Once Blythe arrives in Idaho, she meets a women that runs the inn she is staying at, and is told the woman is a witch, well more of a psychic. Then Blythe meets a man in a bar and they kind of hit it off, but then when Blythe starts asking around about Finn, she discovers a sordid tale of possible adultery, murders, and a family that was torn apart and has never found it's footing again. Before long Blythe is emotionally invested in Kevan, Finn's brother, and his daughter and their family drama. There are vivid dreams, and paranormal encounters that help Blythe uncover a deeply buried family secret. But, is Kevan a man she can trust?
The connection between Blythe and Finn all those years ago remained in tact. That connection , no matter how implausible will bring Blythe face to face with her destiny. For the first time in her life, Blythe has the boldness that eluded her for the past thirteen years. She speaks her mind and takes charge in situations where as before she just did things the way her husband wanted them, and that included giving up her career as a photographer. Now Blythe is determined to discover the truth about Finn and Kevan before she goes back home. I loved watching this transformation in Blythe. She was feeling down about herself, depressed about her age, the toll the divorce took on her children, and she was nervous about the future. She finds her new found bravado gives her a new confidence in herself and despite the astronomical odds that a connection so strong from so long ago would lead her to this time and to this place, Blythe jumps in with both feet and finds she is where she should have been all along. Things didn't turn out the way they should have all those years ago, but happiness and peace has been a long time coming for Kevan and Blythe . The two of them will discover the long buried secret that was tearing at a family and with that knowledge that are now free from the past, both Kevan's and Blythe's and will now be able to forge a much happier future for one another and for their respective families.
This story has a touch of whimsy,, a paranormal tone, which is really sweet, a romantic suspense edge, and will appeal to those who enjoy contemporary fiction and women's fiction. The importance of trust is a theme woven into the story and demonstrates how the lack of trust can destroy and eat at a good relationship. Both Blythe and Kevan will have to take a big chance with one another and having faith along with trust is what will give them the strength to move forward. Once I started reading this book I didn't put it down until I was finished. I was not familiar with this author before reading this book, but I am certainly going to try out more of her books! 4.5 round to 5
Not often do I read a book that makes me gush and want to run out to tell all my friends about it, but Blue Midnight is one of them!
I had a very different review written, but it didn't convey how very quickly this book grabbed hold of me and didn't let go, even after the last page. So okay, I'm officially gushing and fangirling even though I'm a greying grandma!
Disappointment, love, heartbreak, suspense, family drama, mystery and even some kookiness thrown in for good measure are just some of what makes this book a wonderful read. The characters in Blue Midnight are such that some I loved, others I felt so-so about and some I just wanted to smack...so pretty much like real life.
This is a complex story that is relatable on many levels. If you are looking for a solid story about starting over and the road not taken, this is it.
I was fortunate enough to read an ARC copy of Blue Midnight in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed his book. Thompson is a wonderful writer. There were some laugh out loud moments and some very tender moments which choked me up. That being said, it was not my favorite book by this author. Not because it wasn't a great book, but because I have a problem personally with the whole love at first sight and soulmate thing. The plausibility of someone suddenly alone in life driving several states away to try and find an old boyfriend she knew for 3 days many years ago, then staying there for the visit with his brother, just was hard to imagine for me. (I'd have just hunkered down on the couch with a box of chardonnay and a big bag of Tom's Hot Fries) . Anyway, it was a nice romance with a few hints of the mystical , love, family, and a splash of mystery.
This was my first book for this author and I truly fell in love myself with her style of writing absolutely sweet story.. After 13 years of marriage Blythe husband decides he wants a divorce, leaving her for his young assistant. Not only is he leaving her for his assistant he is taking the assistant and their two young daughters to Hawaii for his honeymoon to the assistant who does that takes kids on a honeymoon.. meanwhile Blythe is searching through some drawers and comes across a phone number she has had for 13 years that she thought she had got rid of . It was from a would-be 3-day Romance... something she thought she had gotten rid of a long time ago. but now she has the chance to look Finn Lanigan up... I found this book to be so hard to put down I actually read it in 2 days 2 settings I know if you pick the book up and this is your type of story you will fall in love with this author as I did.. I would recommend it to anyone because it's not only a beautiful cover for the book but a beautiful story on the inside...
Come sta adesso Blyte?
While her young daughters are attending her ex-husband's wedding out of state, Blythe follows her heart all the way to Blue Mountain in Idaho in search of Finn, a man she loved 13 years ago. Does he still live there? And, is there any chance he still loves her all these years later? Read this sweet, heartwarming story about second chances to find out!
While listening to this audiobook, I felt myself rooting for Blythe and hoping she would find love again, especially when the story took a turn I was not expecting. I liked that while Blythe was searching for Finn, she also helped solve a mystery because it added even more depth and intrigue to the love story. Speaking of the love story, normally I would be skeptical about a couple falling in love in only three days... but Tess made me believe. Not once, but twice!

I received a copy of this book from the author. All opinions are my own.
This is the 6th book I have read by this amazing author this summer, and as expected I LOVED this book. Thompson has such an amazing way with words. She pulls you immediately into the story and there you stay, long after the last page is turned. Which is a good thing because sometimes you meet these old friends again in other stories. This was new series, with all new characters, but just the simple fact that Blythe and Bliss grew up in River Valley made me so happy - somehow I felt closer to both women as a result.
This book had all the aspects of a perfect story - romance and suspense. I especially loved the inclusion of the mystical aspect. I am a big believer in signs and I loved watching the "signs" in the book play out.
I received a review copy in exchange for an honest review.
Very moving novel. Enjoyable story of life, love and lies. Picturesque small community, intertwining people for a very interesting story. Look forward to following this author for her exceptional skills.

Many women have faced it, mid-forties, divorced, a stay-at-home mom, now alone, left for a younger, more vibrant replacement. Left with the big questions: Why? Now what? When will it stop hurting? Then there is always the biggest question of all, whatever happened to the One That Got Away? On what was practically the eve of her wedding, Blythe met a man and all of the magic of love, soulmates and happily ever after was standing right in front of her, but being ever so responsible, she left a huge piece of her heart in a small town hours from home. When Blythe came across the phone number Finn had given her thirteen years before, just in case she changed her mind about her wedding, she started on a journey to find the road not taken. To see if what they shared was real. What she finds is a tall and handsome man, who sends her head spinning, but he is not Finn. Little did she know the connection Kevan had to Finn, or the joys and pain these two had shared. What she did discover were skeletons in the closet of a small town, whispered gossip and vicious rumors, all covering a dark secret, lies, mistrust and a wealthy family torn apart. The most damaged pawn among them was a teenaged girl, who lost both her mother and her favorite uncle, as she is forced to be a puppet to the dark whims of her twisted boyfriend and his father.
Through it all, Blythe forges ahead to discover the truth about two people who died under mysterious circumstances and reunite a family torn by doubt. In the process, she also discovers the inner strength to see into her own life and her own heart as she learns to live for the present and not look back on the past or wait for a future that may never come unless she makes it happen.
Flat out, Blue Midnight started firmly appearing to be one genre, but had the strength to morph into one that crosses several. From a bleak tale of a woman lost and bitter to a mystery to be solved, to a tale of personal growth, discovery and second chances at life and love, Tess Thompson has written with a strong hand, guiding her characters along without getting lost in too many details as she centers the spotlight on Blythe, the inner Blythe and the Blythe she has become. Wonderful writing, realistic characters, spot on dialogue and gut-clenching emotion, this journey is one to be savored, enjoyed and celebrated, because in there is a tale of human growth and acceptance of life as it is played out.

Blue Midnight by Tess Thompson Book #1: Blue Mountain Series Source: Purchase My Rating: 4/5 stars My Review:
Blythe Heywood is a broken woman. After more than fifteen years of marriage, her husband has left her for a younger woman and she hasn’t yet figured out how to once again live her life. Though her daughter’s bring her a great deal of joy, her new divorced reality sees to it the girls aren’t always with her. In those moments (and sometimes in the shower) Blythe breaks down and desperately tries to understand how she got to this new reality in the first place.
Finn Lanigan once offered Blythe a different life and a different path but she chose instead the path she thought would bring her safety and security, a life very unlike the one her mother provided when she and her younger sister, Bliss were children. When that life turned out to be her very undoing, Blythe, with a more than a bit of encouragement from Bliss decides to spend her three week “vacation” in Peregrine, Idaho looking for the path she didn’t take.
Peregrine, Idaho isn’t just a small town, it’s a microscopic town so finding shouldn’t be that hard to do. Asking questions in a small town makes the native’s restless and it doesn’t take long for Blythe to realize she has opened an old wound. According to the official report, three years ago Finn Lanigan died in a car wreck as he was leaving town with his sister-in-law. The Finn Blythe knew never would have tread on another man’s marriage so the only thing to do is keep asking questions and the place to start is the Lanigan property.
Kevan Lanigan has spent the last three years trying to deal with the fact that his wife was leaving town with his brother. With an angry teenage daughter and no explanations for her, Kevan is barely hanging on as it is. When Blythe walks into his life and begins asking questions about the day his world fell apart, Kevan is not just blown away by her presence but also by the questions she is asking. In just a few short days, Blythe and Kevan not only discover there is more to Finn’s story than (almost) everyone knows and they discover a beautiful attraction to one another.
The Bottom Line: Tess Thompson opens the Blue Mountain series with a touching love story wrapped in a little bit of mystery. Blythe and her girls are three instantly likeable characters, the town of Peregrine is so quirky and odd that it’s hard not to love, and Kevan Lanigan is every woman’s dream come true. Thompson brings together two characters in Blythe and Kevan who need to be healed, helped, and loved. Both have a hard past to overcome but with one another, they are certainly on the path to a HEA. Thompson really takes her time building her characters (especially Blythe) so once the story begins to pick up the pace at about the halfway mark, you are invested in the characters and want to know how their story is going to end. This is a slow burn kind of read with the pace and plot moving slowly and steadily toward the climactic end. The mystery of this read is just enough to balance out the romance and each (the mystery and the romance) informs the other. There is a whole host of secondary characters in this read, including Blythe’s sister Bliss, her two daughters, Kevan’s siblings, and his daughter who are not only interesting and entertaining but also proof that the series is meant to move forward for quite some time. Thompson has given herself ample material to work with and I for one am going to be signing myself up for more of the Blue Mountain series.
I found it at the very back of my bedside table drawer, next to an old bottle of nail polish.
Blythe is a recently divorced mother of two. While clearing away some things, she comes upon a phone number she has held onto for thirteen years. It belongs to Finn Lanigan, a man she spent three days with at a music festival before her wedding. She begins to wonder what would happen if she connected with him now. So begins her journey to Peregrine, Idaho to try for a second chance.
Blythe arrives in Peregrine and meets Kevan who turns out to be Finn's brother. She alter learns that Finn died in a car accident several years before. A series of events has Blythe staying at Kevan's ranch and trying to uncover what really happened to Finn.
This was such a lovely book. I fell into the plot right away and didn't want to stop reading. Blythe is not only looking for a past love, but is also looking for the woman she was. Kevan has so much heartache that it is palpable. Together, they learn to heal each other.
The mystery portion of the story was well done. So much miscommunication and years of unrest with the Lanigan family. All the small town secrets did not help with Blythe's quest. I loved how Moonstone, the B&B owner, took Blythe under her wing and tried to help her find answers.
This was a sweet easy read that I enjoyed. I look forward to reading the next book and learning more about the Lanigan family
This is such an enjoyable read, the type of book to curl up with and forget about the world. A love story but so much more. And I liked to see older protagonists discover love. Yay Blythe and Kevan!
Have you ever wondered about the road not taken? Where would your life have traveled had you made a different decision? We’ve all had these questions in our mind from time to time. Travel this journey as Tess Thompson takes you down the path in her first book of the Blue Mountain series.
Blythe Heywood travels to Peregrine, Idaho, with those questions in mind. Newly divorced and lost without her children for a few weeks Blythe sets out to re-discover herself and what she wants out of life. What she finds will surprise you.
This is a poignant story about love, loss & rebirth of a divorced woman. It was easy to identify with the characters. The twist and turns of the plot were refreshing, reality mixed with a love story and family drama. I’m excited to read the second offering.
I have read several of Tess Thompson's other books and have loved every one of them. Blue Midnight is right up there with all her other amazing works and is so very good. I feel like I've just made a whole new set of friends in this book and can't wait to find out how the rest of this series turns out. Ms. Thompson has such a wonderful way of creating characters that are so relatable. I felt like I was friends with Blythe in this book and wanted to be there for her in what she was going through after her husband of 13 years breaks the news that he "wasn't in love" with her anymore. Now she has to start life anew and as she's cleaning out her nightstand she finds a phone number. Someone she met right before she married Michael and OH, the chemistry! She has regrets about the choice she made to honor her engagement. What should she do now? After 13 years how would Finn feel? Would he even remember her? Her sister, Bliss, convinces her to try and find Finn. The story takes the reader to the town of Peregrine, Idaho, and the search begins. There is mystery, shocking revelations, suspicions, physical attraction, a bit of paranormal activity, family feuding, finding love again, and so much more. This is all written into a fantastic story by a very talented story teller, Tess Thompson. When I pick up one of her books, I know I'm in for a wonderful journey in the lives of her characters. I become invested in the characters and keep turning the pages to find out what happens in their lives. The setting of this story is in the mountains of Idaho and the scenic descriptions are right on. I felt like I was breathing the fresh pine, feeling the cool breezes off the lakes and listening to the sounds of nature as I was reading. Again, a way that Ms. Thompson has of bringing the reader right into the story. There are passages in the book that are so perfect for the feelings of the characters. The destiny of Blythe to be in Peregrine and search for the one real love she gave up to keep her commitment to Michael, was a great premise. "Why would you do that?" He raised his head to look into my eyes. "What are we doing here, Blythe?" "Despite my best efforts, tears filled my eyes. "I don't know exactly. All I know is that there have been times in my life when I knew I was exactly where I should be and this is one of them." I'm on a reading marathon of this series. I can't wait to begin the next book, Blue Moon, and the continuation of the family saga that it will tell. Thank you, Tess Thompson, for a great read that I enjoyed so very, very much! I would give it all the stars in the blue midnight skies if I could! Definitely 5 stars for me!
This is the 2nd book I've read by this author & I was engrossed from the very beginning. First, the writing style is beautiful, it has a very easy flow, well paced & wonderfully developed characters.
Blythe, married with two young daughters, married Michael thirteen years ago. Now he wants a divorce. She gave up her career for him & so much more once you get into the depths of this story.
Blythe takes a solo trip to seek out her past, to get answers to her many questions, to seek solace & self discovery but mainly to make peace with a decision filled with regrets that she made many years ago.
This book conjures up many emotions, unexpected twists, the imperfection of family members, lost souls & new found love & relationships. Through & through, this is a heartfelt beautiful story. I just can't rave enough about this book & this author! Read this book!!!
What a great book to sit and read with a cup of coffee in hand! I love books by women about women and this one is a heartwarmer. Blythe is a very likeable character venturing into a new chapter of her life. You cannot help but root for her. Sometimes looking into the past sets you up for your future. In this case, Blythe sets off for a mini-vacation the weekend of her ex's wedding to search for her lost love with the push of her sister. She finds what she has been searching for - someone who loves her and her girls unconditionally. There are some twists and turns and a bit of mystery too. There are some parts that have a bit more detail than we need but overall it is very well written and enjoyable. Take a chance on the Blue Mountain series and you won't be disappointed.
“I can’t be certain but I felt the stars twinkled slightly brighter for that one moment, perhaps experiencing their own joy that destiny was fulfilled, at least for two of the weary souls who wandered the moonlit night.” This quote from the book sums up the totality of Blythe’s story. It was gripping and full of life’s ups and downs. I couldn’t put it down. It showcases the heart ache of abandonment by someone who vowed to love you forever. You have to go on, maybe there is someone out there to love you. Maybe, if not look out for yourself.
This has a great storyline full of romance, unrequited love, family secrets, pain, healing, rediscovery, new beginnings, and forgiveness. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
I loved everything about this book. The characters were all so interesting and the location/descriptions made you feel you were right there. Great storyline with a little romance and a mystery to unravel. Horses and a yellow lab! Loved it all!!
I love the Cliffside Bay series by this author, so I was very excited to start this series. As usual, Ms. Thompson did not disappoint. I absolutely loved the arc of this story. Blythe is a heroine to really get behind and following her journey from heartbreak through discovery to redemption and a new life was both emotional and fulfilling. I loved the way that the author was not afraid to explore esoteric concepts and ponder deep questions; this made it different from other books in the genre. Always a pleasure to read Ms. Thompson’s books, and I look forward to the rest in this series.
After forty-five year old Blythe Heywood's thirteen year marriage ends in divorce when her husband leaves her for a younger woman, she is left devastated and uncertain of what to do next with her life. While packing up the remainder of her belongings from the marital home that was sold, Blythe finds a scrap of paper stuck in the back of her bedside table. The paper takes Blythe back to the past ... thirteen years ... when she traveled a month before her wedding to Peregrine, Idaho to attend the Sun Valley Folk Music Festival. While at the festival Blythe met thirty-six year old Finn Lanigan, and spent a three-day weekend with him. While the affair was innocent, they only shared a few kisses, there was something between them, a connection that Blythe never felt before or since, but Finn was her road not taken, and when their shared weekend came to an end, Blythe returned home to honor her commitment to marry Michael Graham. But Finn's last words stayed with her all these years ... "if you change your mind, here's this..." a note with his name and number, and one last kiss under an Idaho star-filled night ... When Michael remarries and takes their two children on his honeymoon to Hawaii for three weeks, Blythe's sister Bliss convinces her to take a road trip back to Peregrine, to that road not taken, and find Flinn. Blythe's road trip to Peregrine will be a journey of self-discovery that will change her life and even bring a second chance at love.
Blue Midnight is a wonderful story of self-discovery and second chances. Author Tess Thompson weaves a magical tale of romance with a mixture of mysticism, mystery and suspense that easily draws the reader into Blythe Heywood's story. Set in Seattle, Washington and Peregrine, Idaho, the reader follows Blythe on her emotional journey back to the road not taken, a journey of self-discovery and unexpected second chances that will change her life.
I love author Tess Thompson's smooth flowing style of storytelling. She easily draws the reader in as she weaves a spellbinding tale of romance with a touch of mystery and suspense. As this complex and multi-layered story unfolds with elements of lost love, disappointment, betrayal, heartbreak, family drama, secrets, loss, forgiveness, and unexpected second chances, the reader is swept away with the raw emotions, drama, and intriguing twists and that will keep them captivated and turning the pages.
Blue Midnight is a captivating story of taking an emotional journey back to the road not taken and truly finding oneself.
