Gravebound was such a really fun prequel novella. I honestly have never read something quite like this before and I found it ridiculously addictive. Yes, I will admit that the romance was a little bit over the top and cheesy but did it dampen my spirits too much? No, not at all. The length of the novella did mean that it the characterisation was rushed and underdeveloped for my usual tastes but I also think this was also due to the fact that it was more of a plot-driven story than anything. Now, these elements would not normally equal a good read in my eyes but it helped that I absolutely freaking adored the magical system of this world. It is tied with the law and as someone who has wanted to be a lawyer/detective/cop since the first time she picked up Nancy Drew at age five, this was the perfect way to get me engaged. In this world, spells and curses worked like legal contracts that bind the castor in a ‘contract against nature’. Incantations/chants are spoken in legalese and the entire system was all written so cleverly that I couldn’t help but love it. The only thing that stopped me from completing adoring this story was the rushed romance and slightly underdeveloped characterisation. I really hope this is expanded on in the first full-length sequel.
