The Othala Witch Collection #13

Sea Cursed: Sector 13

Rate this book
Sea Cursed, by USA Today bestselling author, Amy Lee Burgess, is the thirteenth novel in the Othala Witch Collection, a series of dystopian paranormal romances.
For centuries the mark of Othala has been a death sentence for every witch who bears it. They call these witches sea cursed. Their destiny is to save Galveteen from monsters known as ravagers by casting the spell of Reutterance, which, legend has it, kills them.
The non-magical Trumbull family has ruled Galveteen ever since the bloody coup where they overthrew the witch co-regents, changing the balance between witches and non-magicals. Where once witches were revered, now they are reviled.
Until she is marked by Othala, Demetria has no idea she is a witch. Brought up in a non-magical neighborhood of Seawall North, she’s been taught to regard witches as inferior beings. Now she must face the fact that not only is she something she’s always despised, but sea cursed as well. As the most powerful earth witch on the island, she must somehow learn to control her unfamiliar, powerful magic.
Logan grew up embracing his sea witch heritage in a neighborhood of Seawall South. He is proud to bear the mark of Othala, even when he is derided and sneered at by the Lord Regent’s elite guard and the Regent himself. Brash and rebellious, Logan walks a dangerous line when dealing with the formidable Lord Regent – one that could cost him dearly.
Sparks fly when Logan and Demetria meet. Neither has bargained on love being part of their destiny to save their world.
Together they must battle prejudice as well as ravagers in a race to save Galveteen from destruction.

The normal Trumbull family has ruled Galveteen since a bloody coup where they killed the witch co-regents, changing the balance between those with and without magic so that witches are hated and persecuted. The mark of Othala on a witch means they are now seen as Sea Cursed as they have to save everyone on the island from the Ravagers by renewing the spell of Reutterance which is believed to kill them.

Demetria was a normal person until she was marked with the mark of Othala and discovers she is actually what she reviles - a witch and is now sea cursed. She may be the most powerful earth witch but she has no idea how to be one.

Logan has grown up knowing he is a sea witch and is proud to get the Othala mark. What he was not ready for was his treatment by the Regent and his elite guard. Then he meets Demetria and they are instantly attracted to each other. Will they get through the challenges facing them, exploring these feeling they are developing for each other and save Galveteen?

I loved this story. It was well written and I was definitely hooked as felt all the thoughts and emotions going through Dem as she struggled to learn magic in a very short time and them both as they developed their feelings and relationships. Definitely a great part of the collection.

Breathtaking!

I thought I'd read all of the Othala Witch Collection novels. I found Thirteen last night and couldn't put it down. I thought Fourteen was the best until I read this one. They're equally magnificent!
Sector 13 is ruled by a non-magical, tyrant: David Trumball. All around the sector, the prejudice against witches is profound.
Demetria and Logan; earth witch and sea witch, must repeat a spell of protection completed every fifty years by an Othala marked witch; one of sea, one of earth.
Demetria must overcome many challenges, trials and soul crushing heartbreak. Will Logan be able to help her as they're thrust out to sea to save Galvateen? Many secrets lie in the Regent's keep. Will they be revealed or forever lost at sea?

Without giving away spoilers, this book is much different than all other Othala Witch novels. The plot is amazing along with the world building. I was completely consumed by the story and its characters. I highly recommend this book and all of the Othala Witch Collection novels. They don't have to read in order; they're stand-alone. 5 stars for Amy Lee Burgess!

I am not into dystopian books normally but I have been interested in reading some of the Othala Witch Collection for a while. This is book 13 so the series must be doing pretty well. Demetria is a woman who didn't know that she was a witch until she gets the deadly mark of Othala. Now she is considered "sea cursed" and must help save Galveteen from ravagers. The way they are supposed to do this, according to legend, is to cast the spell of Reutterance which is a death sentence spell. The problem is she was born into a society that hates witches and considers them unworthy and inferior. So in the blink of an eye she goes from normal to being something she hates and being cursed. Now she is a powerful earth witch with no training at all. Logan however is different. He is proud to be marked by Othala and has a problem with authority and is always pushing his limits.

As the blurb says you can really see the sparks when Demetria and Logan meet. They are both sea cursed so they both have to work together to save Galveteen while being hated by the very people they are trying to save. The problem is would you want to fall in love when you think that the only way to save the people who hated you was to die for them?

The book is well written and flows well. I found myself drawn into the story. The characters are written well and the plot is good. I can see why this series has gotten up to so many books. This book is written so well that you can picture the scenes in your head and feel like you are almost there with them. It is interesting to see how Demetria deals with the change from being normal to be despised. And the people they are saving I might have just let them die personally. I mean HELLO these people are risking their LIVES to save you, the people who hate and denigrate them.

It all starts with a lightning strike, sea cursed they say. Every fifty years two witches are marked by Othala then sent out to sea to perform the Reutterance. Never to be seen or heard from again. The goal, save the sector from succumbing to ravagers.

A dystopian world divided into 16 Sectors to save both the human and witch races. Magical barriers protecting each sector from the ravagers. Well written the story maintains a steady pace with the characters developing and growing into themselves throughout. Demetria and Logan are sea cursed, falling in love and tasked with saving the sector, despite the overall anti-witch sentiment. Will they overcome the unforeseen struggles and prejudices to save Galveteen?

Like all of the other Othala Witch Collection, Sea Cursed can be read as a stand alone. A great read for those who love happily ever after. 4.25/5 stars

Raised as a human, Demetria gets the shock of her life when she receives the mark of the Othala. Despite willing giving himself up when he received his mark, Logan receives harsh treatment among the guardsmen whom are bringing him in. Upon first meeting sparks fly between Logan and Demetria and Logan must work to help Demetria bring out her witchy powers if they are to succeed in their mission. Will they survive despite the rumors of it being a death sentence? Will they find love along the way?

This is the first book in this series that I read and it sucked me right in! Loved the concept of Demetria growing up unknowing that she is a witch only for the once in a life time chance of her getting the mark to happen. Loved Logan's personality and his fierce protectiveness over everyone he held dear! I did agree with Demetria being mad at her mom for hiding it, BUT was really glad that she was able to over come it quickly it and it didn't hold her back. Loved that the Regent got what he deserved in the end! Great book and will definitely be going back to read the others in the series!

BIG DISCLAIMER: I can't rate this book because I worked on it. All I'll say is that Amy really knows how to write *awesome* magical systems with great authenticity (and next time there's a thunderstorm I'll be looking up at the sky with a leery eye). This is a well-realised world that I understand from the author is a shared creation in a series, and the Big Bad the characters have to overcome is not only an external threat courtesy of some sort of Lovecraftian horror but also from within, in their community. Evil despot is suitably creepy and reminds me quite a bit of a certain politician who has grabby fingers.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I started reading this story of the Othala witches. I have to confess this story delighted and enchanted me from the beginning. Burgess did an incredible job transporting me to a world where two powerful witches must band together to save their island from marauding ravagers. I love how Demetria began her adventure with no clue she had magical powers. Suspense and intrigue grabbed me from the first page and didn't release its grip until I reached the end. I would highly recommend this book to everyone.

I've been wanting to read this story since it came out and I'm sure glad I did as it certainly didn't disappoint. Filled with mystery, romance and action there wasn't much that didn't pull me in.
I loved the characters and just how realistic and unique they were. I really felt like I was right there in the story.
The story itself was fast-paced and highly enjoyable with all its different twists and turns.
I definitely recommend this series to paranormal/fantasy romance lovers.
