SoCal natives, Nate and Cody have been friends since childhood. Both knew they were different—and the same. At seventeen, a stolen weekend in the Florida Keys drove their connection deeper and hotter than either could imagine. They were meant to be together. Then, for reasons only Nate knows, suddenly they weren’t.
They’re still friends. Best friends. But they’ve moved on and found other partners. The yearning remains, however, despite the long-ago secret that drove them apart, and when tragedy strikes, both men find themselves in the dark. They must grope their way back to who and what they are...which they will find in each other’s arms. Sometimes, losing one’s sight can open one’s eyes—and heart.
Susan writes steamy, sexy and fun contemporary romance stories, some suspenseful, some gritty and dark and hopefully always entertaining. She’s also Editor in Chief at Divine Magazine, an online LGBTQ e-zine, and a member of The Society of Authors, the Writers Guild of Great Britain, and the Authors Guild in the US.
Susan is also an award-winning script writer, with scripts based on two of her own published works. Sight Unseen has garnered no less than five awards to date and her TV pilot, Reel Life, based on her debut novel, Cassandra by Starlight, was also a winner at the Oaxaca Film Fest.
The ‘unofficial’ stuff…
She loves going to the theatre, live music concerts (especially if it’s her man crush Adam Lambert or the divine Cumberbatch) walks in the countryside, a good G and T, lazing away afternoons reading a good book, and watching re-runs of Silent Witness and Wire in the Blood.
Her chequered past includes stories like being mistaken for a prostitute in the city of Johannesburg, being chased by a rhino on a dusty Kenyan road, getting kicked out of a youth club for being a ‘bad influence’ (she encourages free thinking) and having an aunt who was engaged to Cliff Richard .
I tend to not enjoy stories where characters and situations are black and white. This falls into that category for me. Exes that are assholes, boyfriends that are shallow and can't handle a disabled partner, parents that are either super supportive or pure evil. My jaw dropped at how ridiculously insulting some characters were, judging others for their clothing and hair like 5 year olds without anyone blinking an eye.
What would you do if you suddenly lost your sight? This is what happens to Nate but it affects him so much more because he is a sculptor with rapidly rising fame. His current boyfriend is a model and he does do his shallow, minimal best to deal with a man who has to learn a new way to live his life. Fortunately, Nate's best friend since childhood, Cody, is right there by his side, giving his loyal support and encouragement. Despite a brief teenage liaison, that ended almost as quickly as it began, they've maintained a strong friendship.
Susan Mac Nicol has done a stellar job of depicting a man struggling to regain his sense of self-worth. She developed a somewhat similar theme in Love You Senseless, so I was confident of a well researched experience. It's not a depressing story, in spite of the tragedy. Nate does move forward with learning the skills he needs but has little faith that he can practice his art. Much of the book follows his recovery, his struggle to overcome doubts about ever being independent, and dealing with additional personal and emotional troubles. He doesn't wallow in it or throw pity parties, so the story develops an uplifting storyline.
Cody is a marvelous character, who has his own burdens to bear where Nate is concerned. He owns an art gallery and with that expertise, as well as knowing Nate for so long, believes he can eventually return to creating his art. It's an uphill battle at times but Cody has such a positive outlook and patient disposition. The secondary characters are done well, including Suzanne (hmm, wonder where that name came from), Nate's therapist/trainer for the blind. I like having a strong, positive female representation in a MM book. There's also Dev and Blu, who have less predominant roles but still add needed elements. Unfortunately there's also homophobic parents creating heartbreak and trouble.
The story is also far less steamy than most of Susan's books. It detracts nothing from the story and I honestly didn't miss extra scenes. It did have lots of love and warmth with wonderfully developing friendships. I can recommend this for lovers of second chances and hurt/comfort.
Don't know what happened, I just could not get into the story.
Well, that is not entirely true ; it was the selfish and immature secondary characters ; that is what happened.
OMG, talk about annoying! It was just too much for me; even consider throwing in the towel but I persevered till the end , even if I had skip a lot of it.

Absolutely loved this book, ouldn't put it down! Beautiful love story between Nate, who lost his sight in an accident and Cody, who has been his best friend since they were kids. The author did an amazing job with this story, especially considering one of the main characters is blind and he's also an artist, a potter. I loved the hint of the scene from Ghost, which happens to be one of my favorite movies.
Sight Unseen is a fabulous friends to lovers romance that had me enraptured from the first page. I think this is hands down my most favourite book of Susan Mac Nicol.
Nate and Cody have been best friends since childhood and they are as close as close can be. When Nate is involved in a life altering accident, Cody rushes to be by his side. It becomes apparent that Nate’s boyfriend is looking for an out to go back to his ex, after all he didn’t sign up to be a carer especially when it interferes with his modelling life. Good job that Cody is ready to step in and help his lifelong friend. With the closer proximity and Nate’s initial dependency on Cody, will this open the door to the feelings they have both been suppressing since they were seventeen?
I absolutely loved this book and the way the lifelong friends become so much more. There was oodles of passion and chemistry between the pair, although it wasn’t all about the sex as this was kept low key but it was where the reader's mind was taken that made it so much more than an erotic read would have for these characters. The tension was sizzling and tangible throughout. The storyline was so emotional especially how Nate went through his coping with becoming blind and his despair at not being able to do his award winning sculpturing anymore. But it was Cody’s support and determination to build Nate’s confidence back up that was a joy to see transpire and the impact it had on them both. There were points I was shouting at each of them ‘Just tell him how you really feel!’ throughout. I was so invested in seeing them find that happy ever after together. When they eventually did take a chance it was so unbelievingly heart-warming and set forth a whirlwind of emotions.
This is a definite must read and I highly recommend this compelling but heart felt romance of two gorgeous best friends becoming the love of each other’s life. Amazingly good. Five stars.
ARC copy provided by the author to Foxylutely Books blog in exchange for an honest review
Really enjoyed this story. I loved that Nate was a positive person and got the help and guidance that he needed. I was rooting for him and Cody all the way. Don't want to give too much away here but if you're familiar with this author's books you'll know you're in for a treat.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I can't even imagine how hard it is losing one of your senses. Something as big as your sight that you take for granted without realizing. I hope I never find out what that is like.
It's so sad reading about basically having to relearn even the simplest things you do everyday in your life. It's a struggle and I empathize greatly for Nate and anyone in real life who is either born blind and never getting to experience such a gift or people who suddenly become blind and know what it is they're going to miss out on. That's why I love a book with a hero or heroine with a disability it shows me a new side to things and it definitely makes you walk away appreciative.
I will say I couldn't give a full 5 stars for two reasons. One, his asshole boyfriend Jon in the beginning. What a shallow self centered dick. Ugh. Hated him. Second, would be Nates family. It was disgusting how they treated him. I was incredibly upset for him. To have you parents turn your back on you is bad enough but the outright evil and cruel way his father acted was just despicable. I felt like it was all a bit piled on. First he's blind then his asshole of a bf plus his fathers hate all his life. It was just too much bad shit for Nate.
I loved loved loved him and Cody together as friends and as a couple.. they were perfect. 4.5 for them two alone.
I really did enjoy this story and was hoping for more of them in an epilogue but they did get their happy ending anyway.
Definitely recommend to readers who love a friends to lovers trope, M/M of course and a hero with a disability who doesn't let it get him down.
Wow, i feel so honoured to have been able to arc read this book. In this we meet Nate, who after an unfortunate accident, is left blind. He feels lost and thinks that life as he knows it will never be the same again. Cody, his best friend since a young age, has always held a torch for him and, unbeknownst to Cody, the feeling has always been mutual. I feel it was a very brave decision to write a story from a blind mans perspective and think the detail within the story goes to show just how much research was done to make this story feel as real as possible as well as bring to light the struggles which come from living firstly as a sighted person and then over night having to change and adapt to being without such an integral sense. I felt the frustration for Nate as he adapted to living without sight and not so much the heartbreak but the feeling of betrayal when he was basically told that because he was blind his boyfriend (or as i call him, the selfish, conceited ass) couldn't be with him anymore. I was so angry for Nate at this. Something i really loved too was how even though Nate was blind he was still able to work and make his masterpieces. I thought that this was an absolutely beautifully written story that flowed brilliantly. Never did the authors lose sight (no pun intended) and write Nate as though he had sight, which i think is a feat in itself, not slipping up. They managed to describe to us, the reader, and make us see things (again, no pun) the way Nate did. An absolutely fantastic 5 star and more, worthy read. LOVED IT !!
Firstly this was a great friends to lover’s story. Secondly this was an intense, well written and obviously well researched story about a man who has to alter and adjust his life when an accident leaves him blind.
It was such a shame that Nate and Cody’s first exploration of their attraction ended as it did. Those lost few years and then finally their regained friendship with no mention of ‘that night’ affected both men deeply and led to many wasted years. When Nate loses his sight and his douche of a boyfriend moves his selfish ass out it is Cody that is there almost begging Nate to let him help and ironically to finally ‘see’ him again and understand how he feels.
The story follows Nate through devastation, acceptance and finally a new way of living. He doesn’t just need to adjust to his new disability – he must adjust his thinking and come to realise that he can still do everything he previously did including creating beautiful pieces of art that his fans will clamour to buy. This is a great story and the author has made Nate’s blindness very believable as you go on a journey in the dark with him.
This was an interesting story. It was a story about real friendship, loyalty, love and truly seeing someone for who they are. It was also about acceptance. The author did a great job writing the story so that it felt as if you knew the characters! Nicely done!!
Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarian, I was gifted my copy of this book.
A hit and run accident leaves Nate blind and his best friend Cody steps up to try to keep things as normal as they can be. When Nate's boyfriend dumps him, he has his memories to keep him going. But the memories aren't of him and Jon. Nope, they are of a weekend long ago, that he spent with Cody. One that he never ever forgot. Being deprived of his sight means that Nate picks up those little touches from Cody, the hitches in his voice. Could Cody be remembering too? Cody never forgot that weekend, no sir. Never stopped loving Nate and resigned himself to the friend zone, which was way better than the no Nate zone. But when Jon walks out, it all comes front and centre. Cody can only hope that Nate will finally see just how much he loves him.
I'd like to commend Ms Mac Nicol on several points.
1. She is a native British writer and usually writes about British characters in places around Britain, and uses English words and spellings. Nate and Cody are native born Californians and so use AMERICAN words and spellings. It pisses me off no end with American authors have British characters using American words that we would never use. HERE??? Ms Mac Nicol uses AMERICAN words and spellings. I noticed this. I really did. And the author worked hard to get it right, and I say she nailed it! Of course, she had help from Nicholas Downs
2. I don't usually care for books written in the first person and I will make no apology for marking a book down written as such. THIS book is written in the first person, from both men's point of view. And I didn't care. I KNEW going in, it was written like this and maybe that's why it did not bother me. I think for THIS book, it's right and proper to be written this way.
3. This book came with a warning, of sorts, in that it carries a "less sex than I usually write" warning. Which did make me chuckle when I had finished! Because, let me tell ya, once Cody and Nate get their act together and finally give in to what they are both feeling, it is HOT. OFF. THE. CHARTS! Had the book NOT had the warning, I would not have noticed the amount of sex in this book, and it would not have been mentioned. But it did, so it is.
And finally...
4. RESEARCH, RESEARCH RESEARCH. Ms Mac Nicol has done a huge amount of research and it shines off every page that Nate is struggling. In every scene he get a new gadget or gizmo. In every person who comes along to help him in one way or another.
I loved this book. Stayed up WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY past my bedtime to finish it in one single sitting.
Thank you, Nicholas, for putting the idea in Susan's head. Thank you, Susan, for delivering such a great read. If this does become a film, I'm so gonna see it!

I was given a copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.
This story had me weeping from the start. When Nate, a young sculptor loses his sight in an accident, his whole world changes. This is the story of Nate learning how to live a life he never expected.
Nate is such a brilliant character. So many members of the LGBT community find themselves without the traditional family support that most of us take for granted and Nate’s inner strength as he faces his loss of sight on his own is inspiring. I loved his talent and passion for his art but I also loved his human frustration and his struggle to remain positive.
Cody is an equally inspiring character. He works tirelessly to support and enable his best friend. He loves Nate fiercely and the relationship between these two men is really special. I love the friendship and I love the way it turns into something more.
My only reservations about this story are with the slightly cliched supporting characters. Nate’s boyfriend and his parents are just too awful to be believable and they detract from an otherwise honest and realistic story. I love Nate’s family of choice and his journey towards independence and a meaningful life is very special.
~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads Review Team~ Loved this book! You could feel the connection between Nate and Cody, not just the love but the friendship. Even if the romantic part never happened this book shows you what true friendship is, that you are there for a person no matter what happens and to make the best of the situation. This book gave me the feels, I couldn’t put it down and when I had to actually stop reading and go to work I couldn’t wait to get back to reading it when I was home again. This will be added to my re-read pile for sure! Characters: well written and easy to relate to Sex: oh yeah! Religious: no Would I recommend to others: yes More than one book in the series: not sure Genre: M/M Romance Would I read more by this author: yes ~Wicked Reads Review Team~
Friends to lovers and main characters with a disability are two of my favorite MM tropes. I knew going in there would be bit of drama and angst, and I loved it. Nate broke my heart, but so did Cody. These two were besties, and then not, and then finally lovers. You ache for all they lost, but you cheer when they finally get it right. It was not always an easy read but in the end it was beautiful, and I truly believe that Susan Mac Nicol has a gift for creating characters that pull on your heartstrings.
Nate is devastated. He’s an artist and now he’s blind? How in the world can he be an artist without sight? Watching him come to terms with his new reality, while at the same time watching Cody step up and be the man that Nate’s useless and selfish ex-boyfriend should have been, was quite difficult. I wanted to bash some heads together, and put my hand on their lips to get them to talk to each other. But, once Cody and Nate take that step together, it was worth all the hurt, sadness, and discomfort.
Cody is not only the best friend anyone could ask for, but he was truly up for the task of being the partner of a blind man. I know many would run from that, as Nate’s ex did, but it takes a special person to put the best interests of another ahead of your own and also love every minute of it. Watching Cody teach Nate to love again, and learn to live again, was quite special and I finished this book with a smile on my face. Highly recommended.
3.5 stars - I felt like this book really dragged in several places. I loved the two MCs and their friends. There were just some parts that bothered me.
Review by: multitaskingmomma My Rating: 5 of 5 Stars
There are only so very few authors I want to grow up to become, one of them is Susan Mac Nicol. I've read all of her works, loved them all, hated some characters, fell in love with quite a few. In all of her works, her gritty style doesn't just give the readers a glimpse of what her characters think or feel, there are times you get lost in them. Most times, you get an up close and intimate seat that can make you squirm, grimace, empathize and eat popcorn with. Even take tea.
Now, Mac Nicol's style cannot be lumped into the one word romance. Think erotic and truly intimate. It makes her readers smile and dream, this one most of all. However, there are times when the eroticism is not just about sex. When it comes to drama and suspense, it gets really erotic.
And then came Sight Unseen.
This is not erotic, far from it. Yes, there are some scenes here that would make many readers pant, but I must say, Unseen is one of her tamest books. In fact, I'd say this reads like a true romance novel.
Do I love this? Heck, yes. The difference between this story and the rest is that there is more focus on the characters. We get to know how they lived before a tragedy, how they coped after. I got to really hate the ex-boyfriend, but have known real couples who went through less and the other simply couldn't cope. In this case, the blindness drives the other one away because of some narcissistic reasons which I can understand.
What I really loved here is the post-blindness events. The learning, the coping, the denials, the perseverance and many more. Some would disagree and cite lack of drama. My rebuttal is, it really depends on the individual on how they deal with life's left hooks. If one were to generalize, sure, depression, telenovela wailing and whatever else scriptwriters can think of to emphasize a loss. But not all drama has to be like that. Sometimes, it is the quiet and determined living after the tragedy which has a greater impact.
Sight Unseen is bigger than it reads for I've read this a while ago, and read it again. Honestly? I've read this more times than I can count, and I've never done that before with a Mac Nicol book. This one speaks volumes in more ways than one. The reader gets the feels, and the images. It's quite hard to let go, especially as I thought: finally, a character who didn't have to break down to get a good cry.
Oh, forgot. Sorry, this story is bigger than romance, but yes, it is truly romantic and I can't argue with dreamy romances.
Sight Unseen takes several of my favorite tropes-second chance, best friends to more, overcoming adversity-and beautifully weaves them together to result in a story I did not want to put down. I adored both Cody and Nate, and wound up reading this book in a single sitting because I didn't want to stop until I found out how everything would turn out for them.
Nate was amazing, and I loved his point of view since it made everything so much more descriptive as he used his other senses to compensate for his loss of sight. Even with such a tremendous loss, he powers through to not just get back to everyday life, but to also get back to his sculpting. He's a beautiful, brave man and a strong character (shh...he was my favorite...don't let Cody know, ok?). Cody was so supportive of Nate, and the two of them were so close and in sync with each other. Both of them want each other but try hard not to show it, and it ramps up the sexual tension of the story quite a bit.
There are some great supporting characters, in particular Cody's sometime hookup Dev, Nate's new friend Blu, and the woman who helps Nate adjust to life as a blind man, Suzanne. All of them add depth to the story and play integral parts in Cody and Nate's lives. Then there's Nate's family...and let's just say there's nothing nice to say about them-period.
Nate's journey as he learns to be in the world without his sight, and following Cody and Nate as they dance around each other before finally coming together again was a real pleasure, and Nate's perseverance and determination were inspiring. It was blatantly obvious the two of them are meant to be together, and once they are their chemistry is simply overpowering.
Sight Unseen gets 5 stars from me, and will most likely be at least an annual re-read...though I don't know if I can go that long without revisiting Cody and Nate and their beautiful story. I highly recommend this story to not just M/M romance fans, but ANY romance fan. It will not only brighten your day, but will also give you a better understanding of life from a sightless viewpoint and make you think of things you'd probably never considered before. It is told from both Cody and Nate's viewpoints, something I really enjoyed since getting both sides made the story richer and gave me a better understanding of how they each were affected. This book is for readers 18+ for adult language and M/M sexual content (oh my goodness...Nate and Cody together...*sigh).
✩ ✩ ✩ ✩ FOUR-STAR ✩ REVIEW ✩ ✩ ✩ ✩ > > Judging a Book by it's Cover < < Mediocre composition. Bold title font, clear author font. Would not visually catch my eye. I was mildly disappointed that while Cody's family took him in [read book to understand the when and why], they received no actual page time other than mere mentions, whereas Nate's parents were featured and his sibling was a figment of our imaginations. There were some minor points of "I saw that coming", but nothing so big as to ruin any key elements. After tragedy strikes and Nate loses his sight, he realizes that what, or rather who he’s needed all along is right in front of him and always has been, ready to help him get through this very difficult time in his life.
I loved Cody and Nate! Nate was so strong and I adored seeing his progression as he settled into his new life with the help of his friends. It wasn’t easy for him to adapt, especially at first and he was understandably frustrated a lot of the time, but it was undeniable that he was a very determined man. Cody was my favorite, though, and my heart broke for how he’d carried a torch for Nate all those years and how ready he was to drop everything to help him get back on his feet, despite the way Nate broke things off with him. Yes, Nate had his reasons and they were valid, especially considering their age back when they got together the first time, but I wanted to shake him up a bit because of how much he hurt Cody. I loved that they took things slowly the second time around, mostly because Cody didn’t want to risk being hurt again, and that they were just so perfect for each other, their connection and the chemistry between them was off the charts!
I’m a bit torn on how to rate this book, because while I loved most of it, there were a few things that didn’t quite work for me, but didn’t diminish my enjoyment of the story: The whole deal with Jon, Nate’s boyfriend. I would have liked to see more of Cody’s parents than them just being mentioned here and there. Nate’s parents, especially his father, being so unnecessary evil. The last bit was a bit too much, in my opinion. And I didn’t quite get why Nate needed the connection with them when they’d already proved to him over and over that they didn’t care about him. It made no sense to me.
All in all, Sight Unseen was a fantastic read. It was obvious Ms. Mac Nicol and Mr. Downs did their homework and researched Nate’s loss of sight and his rehabilitation extensively and wrote about it in a very sensitive and relatable manner, giving us a very emotional account of all Nate had to go through. The book was a very well-written second chance best-friends-to-lovers romance, with lovable characters and an engaging plot that I found difficult to put down until I finished it. Highly recommendable!
Friendship matters. Nate Powell wakes up in unfamiliar surroundings to find he's in the hospital. He was totally disoriented, not remembering what happened and unable to see. He was wondering where his friends Jon or Cody were. He returned to conciousness 2 days later to Jon trying to calm/comfort him. He remembered getting an award and dancing at a party. He and Jon were arguing abotu Jon's ex, Caleb's attempt to get back with Jon. A female driver hit Jon while he was out running, then called the police. Jon couldn't tell him the truth, doctor said damage to his eye and he may be permanently blind. Nate and Cody were good friends when they were young, veering toward romance, then had a moment that disrupted their paths. They went their own ways in life. Current day, Cody came to help his friend. He planned to help Nate get back on his feet and find his balance as an unsighted person. They each care for each other, but their personal baggage holds them back. Everyone can see the truth but Nate and Cody. Will they have the talk? Can they set their baggage down? Will they take the step together? Will Nate get his sight back? Nice story. Very emotional and deep! Well done. I received an ARC from Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. Nice cover art!
A TRUE LOVE STORY Wow where to begin! So Nate and Cody have always been the best of friends. they had a wonderful weekend where they experiment sexual together when they were 17 but Nate said he wanted to go off to college and be free to explore his sexuality and remain friends with Cody and Cody agreed. Nate is a brilliant sculptor and is dating a model when he loses his sight in an accident and it isn't long for his boyfriend to leave. Vain much!! Thankfully his best friend Cody is there to help him out. And it doesn't take long for them to start feeling to come back. OMG I TOTALLY LOVE CODY HE IS JUST THE BOMB!!!! I REALLY DISLIKED JON WHAT A TOTALLY WASTE OF SPACE, I DONT THINK HE EVER LOVED NATE FOR THE MAN HE WAS. CODY IS JUST WHAT NATE NEEDS. JUST BECAUSE HE IS BLIND DOESNT TAKE AWAY FROM THE MAN THAT NATE IS. I LOVED THE BANTER AND THE EASY GOING FRIENDSHIP THEY HAVE. NATE IS ONE STRONG MAN WHO WHEN HE HAS THE SUPPORT OF HIS BEST FRIEND CAN DO ANYTHING, NOTHING IS OFF THE TABLE!!!!!!!!!!! THIS IS A TRUE LOVE STORY AND I COULDNT PUT IT DOWN. I WENT THROUGH SO MANY EMOTIONS WITH NATE AND CODY ITS JUST A FANTASTIC READ.

Sight Unseen is a standalone story by Susan Mac Nicol, that details the long friendship of two men, and how things have turned out differently than expected. When they were seventeen, they had a "dirty weekend" away, and Cody thought it was the start of something special. He had given his heart away to Nate, and looked forward to the future. Unfortunately for him, Nate's father had a different view on things, and Nate made a decision which hurt both him and Cody. Luckily, they were able to keep their friendship, although Cody's feelings never dissipated.
This book is about what happens when Nate has an accident and loses his sight. How Cody helps him, how Jon doesn't. How things really are manageable if you set your mind to it. This story is about hope, about not giving up, about hurt and pain, about friendship and love. It is quite simply outstanding. I was completely enthralled with what was happening, although I was impatient for Nate and Cody to sort themselves out!
Sight Unseen is exceptionally well written, with no editing or grammatical errors to disrupt the reading flow. It is told from a dual perspective, which is incredible when you realise that one of those perspectives in Nate's. All of the detail is there that you could possibly wish for. Actually, scrap that. There is one detail that was never cleared up, and that is who hit Nate and caused the accident. We are told it's a female, but the nasty, vindictive part of me really wanted it to be Caleb and for him to be caught! Yes, I know, it's horrible of me, but still... ;)
In case you haven't realised by now, I thought this book was amazing, and would most definitely, highly, and without doubt, recommend it!
* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book, and my comments here are my honest opinion. *
This story is an emotionally charged one. Cody and Nate are great people. Long time friends but both carrying “feelings” for the other. Time and chance has caused them to never be together as more than best friends until an accident brings them another chance. Jon, what a piece of work, but their true friends are just that. This book has you invested from the start. This story is superior first as a romance, then as one of rebirth and healing and finally of love found that has been hidden for years and all the while laying dormant but still alive.

Sight Unseen is a collaboration between Susan Mac Nicol, a bestselling gay romance novelist, and Nicholas Downs, an L.A. producer and actor. Together they have created a story worthy of the big screen, which it is destined for. The story began as a script written by Downs, who went to Mac Nicol for advice, and this amazing collaboration was born. Together they decided to make the story into a full-length novel and then develop a screenplay together with the hopes of getting it to production. This book is an amazing romance and, frankly, will make one unbelievable movie. I cannot wait for the project to get accomplished.
Nate is a sculptor. It is what defines him. It is what keeps his spirit fed and mind on track. Growing up in a difficult home life, his one constant, besides his sculpting, is his friend Cody. Best friends since the age of eight, Cody has always been there for Nate—even when Nate walked away from Cody when they were teens. At seventeen, ready to head to college, they took a trip to the Florida Keys together. It was supposed to be about fishing and sunshine, but turned into the hottest sexual experience either had ever had to that point, and solidified their connection for life. Afterward, Nate walked away, unable to tell Cody the truth—that Nate’s father threatened Cody’s family if he didn’t. Life moved on and now, they are both successful businessmen in their own rights. Nate can be a little temperamental, he hates confrontation, and would rather ignore than confront his problems at the beginning of the book. How his character changes and his inner strength hones itself after his accident is one of the best things about the story.
“Yeah, yeah. ‘The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision. I remember the quote.’ Helen Keller had a lot to answer for. That had been Marty’s mantra each time I’d broken down or decided to get pissed with him.”
Cody has worked hard for all he has. Scraping his way through college, he opened his own art gallery and has done well for himself. He will always have a special place in his heart for Nate. Being in love with your best friend can be a tough place to be, but Cody has done it for so long that it’s second nature now. Allowing himself to think of Nate as anything other than a friend now is emotional suicide, and Cody won’t allow himself to go there. Cody comes from an eclectic hippie family, and his mother is particularly endearing. Cody is a naturally optimistic person, a fiercely loyal friend, and an intelligent man. He tries very hard to see the best in everything, people included and won’t accept Nate feeling “less than” after his accident.
“You know exactly what I am saying, son. You think your dad and I don’t know you carry a Statue of Liberty sized torch for that boy? And now he’s going to need you even more, so I’m saying—love takes off masks that we fear we cannot live without and know we cannot live within. Time to take off your mask, honey.”
This story takes us on an emotional journey straight from page one, when Nate awakes in the hospital after being hit by a car while he was out running. Secondary characters abound, and we meet Nate’s current boyfriend immediately, and, quite frankly, I was less than impressed with that guy. The words narcissistic asshole fit really well! But, we also meet Cody’s family, Nate’s new home nurse, Suzanne, (who rocks), and Marty, his therapist (who so deserves his own book) while he is still in the hospital. I appreciated the inclusion of Dev and Blu; their friendship to Nate and Cody, and how they get there, is important. All the secondary characters play important roles in this story, and help to underpin and push forward the story arc.
Yes, there is a period of uncertainty for Nate. He struggles, as anyone would, with coping with his new blindness and what it means for him as an independent man. Mentally, Nate has to dig deep and concentrate on what is positive, and confront demons he never expected to haunt him. What keeps this story from becoming dark is the relationship between Cody and Nate. Cody doesn’t allow Nate to wallow, to think of himself as being less of a man or an artist. He discovers people and resources for Nate that allow Nate to stand on his own feet and relearn his world. It’s a romance. There are some truly heartbreaking scenes, but also some strikingly lovely ones of triumph. Nate comes to terms with his blindness, his art and Cody.
Susan Mac Nicol does a wonderful job of keeping her characters “in character”. Cody isn’t an expert on blindness; he has to learn as much as Nate does. Nate’s perspective is written totally through a blind man’s view of the world. The story paces well; it follows a beginning, middle and ending without getting bogged down or off track from its ultimate purpose, which is a romantic story about hope. Hope for love, hope for a better tomorrow and inner peace. I think it will translate really well to the big screen. Overcoming obstacles, finding love, these are all themes we can relate to. This is a feel good, heartwarming, story of love and triumph, and I highly recommend it.
“This—this was what I had wanted. Cody’s warm, willing body in my bed, his soft, loving kisses on my hair when he thought I was sleeping, and the feeling of truly belonging to someone special. Someone who wanted me just as I was."
This book was terrific. The story was heartfelt and moved along at the perfect pace. I loved the MC's, Cody and Nate. The secondaries were amazing as well. What I think was the best part of this story was that there was none of the cliched jerk ex-boyfriend inspired angst. The story didn't need it and I'm glad the author chose not to throw it in because that's basically what most other authors would have done. So, I thank her for that. This was a sexy, sweet, romantic story and I absolutely loved it.
Sight Unseen is an emotional friends to lovers story. Nate, a sculpture, lost his sight in a horrible accident. He is such an incredible character. He never really wallowed in self-pity despite bouts of grief over what he has lost. Nate steps up and gets the help he needs to navigate his new life. He is lucky to have his friend Cody by his side. Cody and Nate have been friends for a long time and lovers briefly when they were teenagers. The couple, especially Nate, go through a lot to get their HEA. I recommend this book to anyone who like mm romance with emotion and a bit of spice.
Susan MacNicol is masterful at writing emotional situations and events. This book is a second chance type of romance with two friends who are now forced into a situation where they end up realizing that they each need more from each other than they have been willing to admit. I adored this book and following along the journey with these men.

Loved the book it was great, the story was well written and the characters are interesting. Wow talk about trying to catch my breath to write this review. Nate and Cody one weekend away together it was hot, raw, sexual, sensual passion and lust it was eroticism. Nate left so they ended up having their own partner. Will Nate and Cody get back together for the feelings they have for each other?
