Waking up in hell was not Del Bellator’s idea of a good time. She’d rather be back on earth, killing demons and hunting down magical treasure for her shop, Ancient Magic.
Turns out that escaping hell is easy—it’s staying out that’s hard. Del’s death magic defies the laws of the supernatural world. Worse—she doesn’t know how to control it. If others learn what she is, it’s guaranteed persecution by the Order of the Magica. And Del already has a deadly and forbidden secret—she shares a soul with a dragon.
Things get sticky when Roarke Fallon, Warden of the Underworld, shows up on her doorstep wanting to drag her back to hell. He’s a one of a kind shifter—the most powerful she’s ever met—and he’s set his sights on her. Helping him catch an escaped demon gives her an opportunity to win her freedom, but only if she teams up with Roarke. She’ll have to use her forbidden magic to get the job done. And that is a recipe for discovery… and disaster.
Magic Undying features a kick butt heroine, a powerful hero, and otherworldly adventure.

Before becoming a writer, Linsey was an archaeologist who studied shipwrecks in all kinds of water, from the tropics to muddy rivers (and she has a distinct preference for one over the other). After a decade of tromping around in search of old bits of stuff, she settled down to start penning her own adventure novels and is freaking delighted that people seem to like them. Since life is better with a little (or a lot of) magic, she writes urban fantasy and paranormal romance.
Narrator Review: Laurel Schroeder Distinguishable between characters: 5 Stars Impersonating opposite sex: 5 Stars. She is one of the few female narrators that I think does an excellent job in this. Accents: 5 Stars - very small Scottish brogue part. Overall enjoyment of Performance: 5 Stars. Laurel Schroeder is one of my favorite narrators and I highly recommend audiobooks with her as the narrator. Recommend audible version: Yes.
Story Review: I've never read this author before and I have to say I'm very pleasantly surprised by how much I got into this book. It started out right in an intense scene and has kept me hooked all the way through.
Del wakes up in the undeworld and uses her powers to escape. When she does, she also releases a Hell Demon who infects her when they fight at the portal on Earth.
Once someone dies and goes to the underworld, they do not escape. The Undertaker of the Hell Realms, Roarke, immediately follows Del to bring her back when he learns of the Demon who has escaped as well.
Del, being a demon hunter talks Roarke into letting her help hunt down the Demon. Not only does she need access to the demons blood or she turns into one but she is also hoping to convince Roarke that she doesn't belong in the underworld.
This whole first book was one big action scene that really had me riveted. I am listening to the audio books for this series and I had a hard time stopping and could have easily listened all the way through.
The romance is very light. It is a slow burn. So much so that Roarke and Del don't really make any progress until the end of book one. It seemed fitting since they spent the whole book chasing this demon.
We do learn that Del is destined for more at the end that gave answers but also more questions to her abilities so now I'm very curious where the author is going to take this in book 2. ARC provided by narrator.
I held off reading this book as I just couldn't quite see how the author would hold my attention . No reflection on her imagination or skills it's just that I became so immersed in the books before this that star Cass, I honestly hadn't particularly looked forward to what could be a bitter disappointment. Surprisingly though the author takes Del, who although previously felt very much like a supporting character and really starts to flesh her out. As a reader I knew Del had an ability that had only recently come to light but here not only is Del back from being supposedly dead but her powers just keep growing! Things are never dull around Magics Bend but now we start to get an insight into the Underworld and the Hell dimensions there. Luckily Dell has no intention of sticking around in Hell but when she returns to the land of the living ( pun intended ) she's followed . Now all this leads the reader quite nicely on not only a series of adventures connected to the legend of Arthur Pendragon but also in a race against time as Del is in a very tricky predicament indeed ! I love the trouble this author takes to let her readers explore history with her unique slant. Every time I feel that I'm transported to places that are both miraculous and real. Yet again this book takes the reader on a journey that connects with myths and legends but for me as I'd visited many of the sites in this story it was such fun. Has Del managed to snag my attention ? That's a resounding yes as she's discovering all kinds of things about herself and as she does the reader is with her every step of the way. My only slight niggle is the fact that yet again a powerful shifter is introduced who is clearly a possible love interest. It's a bit too similar to the previous storyline although I hold my hands up and loudly state I much prefer the Warden Roarke, to Aiden. He's big, slightly bad, a joy to look at and pretty much the most deadly male this author has dreamed up. It just feels like a more adult story that's brewing between them and do I detect a hint of sadness ? There's nothing more fun than a slightly damaged hero and Roarke might abide by the rules but clearly Del has other ideas! I'm so pleased I read this and hasten to reassure fans of the Dragons Gift series that it's as exciting and magical as ever This voluntary opinion is of an advance reader copy
NOTE: This is book #1 of The Seeker but actually book #6 in the series
OK, I need to be honest, I really thought that after the first 5 books I would be tired of this series and Del kinda seemed dull in comparison to Cass but as usual once I got to reading it, this was equally entertaining.
I have described these books to people as somewhat violent adult stories with a touch of romance without the sex and profanity, it seems people actually like such things if the story is good and all of these books have done that even though I thought those first 5 books should have been 4 but I have still enjoyed them all.
Del basically wakes up after dying (we thought) in the Underworld and the action starts almost immediately and seldom lets up in this first book telling Del's story. I read most of it on the first day until bed and started again the next morning so obviously I enjoyed it.
The Warden of the Underworld is a great character and she lets you see little pieces of him as you go along but much more will be revealed in future books as this story unfolds. It already seems to have a better ending than the Cass' first book which I liked and we are not even sure exactly what Del's eventual powers might be since she seems to be evolving.
That touch of romance gives the book a nice touch but this is definitely more urban fantasy than any type of romance for this first book. My only real minor complaint is the cover depicts what looks to me like a teenage girl (as the story sometimes alludes ) which obviously Del is not for reasons of maturity and overall wisdom. Add to the fact that in my mind the story does not logically sit well with her being less than mid 20s (regardless of what might be stated)
Bottom Line: Loved it, can't wait for the next one. Very minor complaints and the fact that IMHO you really can't have a 5 Star novel for a first book of a person's story that is not finished so 4 Stars it is and highly recommended.
I am so happy I finally got to start dells story! I have read all of Cass's books which I would recommend reading before these. The Story all starts in The Huntress series by the author, so if you want to give these books a shot read those five books first because I wouldn't want you to feel like you are missing out on anything.
Dell is in a mess and needs to find a way to fix it all. On top of that she has some crazy prophecy to fulfill. Not to mention a demon on the loose that could cause a whole lot more trouble than she already has. With help from someone she doesn't expect who is also a magical being she never knew existed she just might be able to fix something, or she hopes so. Unfortunately it turns out to be a lot harder than she expected, because she is finding that she is way more powerful than she thought, which could blow everything considering the secret that she has to keep not only about herself, but also her loved ones.
This book was so well written. I am happy to see that everything came together so well. This book had surround sound along with great description, but at the same time the description was not overdone. Dell was easy to connect with, and become a part of which I loved, because I got to make yet another best friend. Book best friends are some of the best! These books forever have a place in my heart. I look forward to reading the second book in Dell's series as soon as possible!
I received this ARC book for free from the author which had no influence on this review. I was under no obligation to provide a review.
At first, I was worried the Seven Realms series is going to spoil me and I won't enjoy this one as much. However, I was really in a mood for something a bit easier on the brain, and not quite so high fantasy (even if I love the genre, but a girl needs a break sometimes), and it showed, because I really enjoyed this one. I hope the next books in the series will be just as good. I really like both Del and Roarke (even if the name is stupid lol), so that's also an added bonus.
Holy Magic! This book was incredible! I really enjoyed it! I really like that this book series gives us insight into each girl's magic and skill set! I can't wait to read the next book!

this one was actually better than the previous series, even though there was still so many flaws and cliches in the plots and the characters, i found it more enjoyable. the thing that i didn't like about this book was how similar each of the characters' character. but i liked the traveling in this book and the kind of unique story.
fav quote: Some of my problems I solved with my sword. But many others, I solved with books. They might look unassuming, but there were worlds within these pages -> what i love the most about Del.
Recap:
Del woke up in hell. she was assessing her surrounding when demons saw her and knocked her out, bringing her to the warden. when they arrived in the warden's castle's courtyard, del attacked the demon with their own blades then using her dragon's sense, she found the portal to Earth. fortunately, she had phantom form so she could pass through.
she arrived in a wood on the outskird of magic bend. when she was on her way to ancient magic, she was attacked by ubilaz demon and she turned into a phantom to fight it. instead, it ran away, but not before it slashed her with its poisoned claw. she arrived to ancient magic, some heartfelt reunions later, she almost fainted because of the poison. connor said that the poison will turn her into ubilaz demon eventually if it was left untreated and they need some ubilaz's blood in order to make the antidote.
but when they were about to find an ubilaz demon, the warden came to meet del and he was smokin hot. she panicked and threw him freezing potion while talking with her sisters of what to do. he didn't feel evil so they just chained him and unfroze him but he easily removed the chain. he was indeed, the warden of ALL underworld, came to take del back to hell. and he knew del's last name, which intrigued her.
but then, he got an info that an ubilaz demon, class 5 demon, escaped. so he had to hunt it down and del offered to help to be in his good graces, who actually a were-demon too, half-shifter half-demon. more fun fact about him: 10 years ago, he convinced all underworlds' kings to report to him and he ruled above them all.
so they plan to track the demon. it was bad news because it attracts other low levels demons and made an army and it was in England. del and roarke (the warden's name) travel through the underpath (through hell) and popped out in supernatural city in England and drove (courtesy of del's friend) to king arthur's castle in northern coast because del's dragon sense tugged her there.
the castle was surrounded by traps. first, it buried them alive but del turned to phantom and roarke turned into demon to get out. when they entered, they triggered something and it rebuilt and came alive, then they were thrown a potion and jailed. but roarke turned into demon and literally tore the stone wall, easy escape.
the found the demon in Merlin's Cave, but it was an ambush and they were attacked by dozens of demons. in the midst of battle, suddenly del was taken by this blue cloud that looked almost like a dragon and it dropped her off in Dartmoor and she met with 2 fairy dogs that led her to a pub. while she drank there, Roarke finally came, looking very messy. they returned to magic bend using the underpath that Roarke made. del refused to sleep in Roarke's house so he followed to her house, made her dinner and slept in the couch.
the next morning, because del couldn't sleep, she decided she needed to find answer by sneaking to visit aethelred. he told her the usual, that she was prophecied for greatness, that her power was growing, that she had a dark past, etc etc. sometimes i wonder, did all the characters were actually one with different features and names? because they acted the same with a slight differences. so uncreative.
del's dragons sense brought her to another part of England. this time, the demon was in an ancient cathedral in a magical city. like before, when they entered the building, it rebuilt itself and came alive, and again, they were bombarded by demons. they easily offed the demons and followed the ubilaz demon in the crypt surrounded by demons that were even bigger than roarke's demon form.
the ubilaz demon was digging one of the grave as if he was looking for something, and when one of the demon threw her to the grave, the ubilaz demon attacked and wounded her again. when she was on the verge of death, she screamed (internally) for helped and the blue cloud came, but it was definitely a dragon. then she was out. she woke up for a moment to see a demon healing her then passed out again.
she woke up in roarke's house in the wood. when she tried to find the demon, she couldn't find it. but she remembered seeing the name Gwenhwyfar on the sarcophagus and so, to find some answers, she decided to visit dr. garisso. he said that gwenhwyfar was and old Welsh spelling for Guinevere. some stories said that she was only a tool for the gain of male like Arthur, Lancelot etc. but there was one story that said she decided to take her own destiny into her own hand so she asked Merlin to make her a concealment charm so powerful so she could get away from these males.
turned out, the thing that the ubilaz demon took was this charm. first, it came to the Merlin's cave, then Guinevere's tomb, there was a pattern there so dr. garisso gave her a book that might reveal where it would strike next. del asked for her sister's help so del and roarke came to ancient magic. while roarke was parking, del came hurriedly inside the store when it happened again. all this time, it was her who made the past came alive and she was afraid it got stronger and they would be permanent. but it was a problem for another time.
cass and aidan came, bringing pizza and they discussed the next step. apparently, aidan had been researching on some concealment charm to make sure the sisters' charm didn'tp broke and victor wouldn't find them. but his team couldn't figure out how the charm was made of. somehow, finding out what Guinevere's concealment charm was made of could help them finding out where the ubilaz demon was. and the next clue was near Edinburgh, Scotland.
they arrived in Edinburg near a forest but there was a strong charm there that tried to prevent them from going further. but Del's dragon sense helped them got trough it and they arrived to a place with stones that told stories. apparently, Merlin didn't make only one charm but two, for Guinevere and Arthur. Artur's charm prevented his soul from going to the Underworld so when one day Britain needed him, he could be awaken and Del knew just where to find the castle where he rested.
Del called for backup and Cass came to pick her and roarke up to Richmond Castle in Yorkshire. when they arrived there, nix and aidan was already there. they approached the castle. roarke, cass, and aida flied across the wall while nix and del stubbornly climbed it when they triggered another enchantment, causing the castle to came alive and guards tried to kill them. but they swiftly offed them and they disappeared.
they entered the castle and faught some of the ubilaz's minion demons, fell to a magical trap, fought more demons while Del chased the ubilaz demon to Arthur's tomb when the knights of the round tables woke up and attacked her and the demon. they were easily gotten rid of them but the demon was faster and it grabbed Arthur's necklace. Del immediately attacked it but no matter how many times she stabbed it, it wouldn't die so she asked for helped from the dragon phantom again.
it came and together, they killed the demon by separating its soul from its body. the dragon turned into a woman named Draka. she told Del that she had been following Del since hell, that Del was a Demise/Guardian and the threat and the power that separated the ubilaz's soul from its body was only the beginning, usual stuff, then it disappeared. Roarke found her in her phantom form, he took her home, let her healed then told her to meet him. she told him about her power and he decided not to take her to the underworld because he felt that she was special (ugh, duh). they kissed and the end.

*I was voluntarily provided this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator.
Del wakes in Hell, flames flickering around her. She gave up her powers in the battle, and now wakes here without them. But, it was prophesied that she has a power related to death. Though she doesn't understand it, can it help her? Del escapes her captures to return to the one place she wants to be, home, just to be told He will come for her. In her escape, she's cut by a demon's claws that leave poison that will slowly turn her into one of the Ubilaz Demon's after her. Then, the hot looking Warden shows up at Del's door. Trying to clear her name with The Warden and save herself, she's on the search for the Ubilaz demon that escaped when she did, with the attractive Warden.
Laurel is the narrator for Cass's books and is also voicing Del. I do enjoy Laurel's work as she voices each character differently. She gives each their own voice, and hearing Roarke is lovely. And hearing him in the same room as Aidan, veeeeery nice. lol. The girls each have their own voice though they are very similar but they do have their own personality, as do all the characters. Laurel has created a flawless narration here, from my ears.
Del has her own journey to take to learn about her prophesied power relating to death. And could meet her significant other in the process.
Starting this book, the first in Del's series, is like starting all over. If you didn't read/listen to Cass's series you would be safe to start with Del's. You get an explanation of each character and their world at the beginning to place everything.
We meet Roarke here. And he's a special find for Del! Seems to be a perfect fit for Del and her death powers along with who she is attracted to. He does seem very hot! Roarke is special in his own way as well. Being different makes you a target, but he's turned that around to make himself needed. I really like what he is, and so does Del. lol.
This relationship feels very similar to Cass's story with Aidan. Del and Roarke's attraction is so close to the same. And Del has her own journey to go through, like Cass, to learn her abilities and past before she woke with her sisters. Along with worrying about people learning what she is. The cycle feels very identical to Cass's story, if you've read her series.
In the end I very much liked Del's new powers and where she comes to. It's an easy urban fantasy story with a sweet romance blooming, just like with Cass.
As much as I enjoyed Cass’s story in the Dragon's Gift: The Huntress I was ready to move on to her other deifiur, Del and Nix, and find out what their roles in the crazy scheme of things were supposed to be. So when it was announced that Del would be up on the chopping block next I couldn’t wait to get my hands on her story, especially with how things ended for her in Infinite Magic, and I wasn’t disappointed! Magic Undying was a fun, quick read filled with twists and turns and great characters.
From the first page we are off and running with Del as she escapes the Underworld and finds herself on a quest with an unlikely partner. Del is spunky, determined and pretty damn kickass. I loved that she went all in and kept her cool when things went sideways, which tended to happen a lot. Roarke, The Warden and Del’s unlikely, and somewhat unwanted, partner in crime is supposed to drag Del back to hell, but finds that the dragging part may not be in the cards. I really liked Roarke. He’s got the whole tall, dark and handsome thing going on and truly believes in following the rules. With his past as shadowy as Del’s present, my curiosity is definitely peaked and I want to know more about him and his past.
The writing was engaging, 1st person POV well done, and though there were a few spots where things slowed a bit, the book moved at a good pace. I liked how Roarke barreled into Del’s life. In some ways it was similar to how Aiden entered Cass’ but with enough of a difference to keep things fresh. I loved hanging out with Cass, Nix and Aiden, as well as the other characters that played a big role in Cass’ own quest. I’m definitely intrigued by the mystery of what Del really is, aside from being a FireSoul, and how being part Phantom plays into it all and am looking forward to seeing what crazy she’ll have to live through in order to find the answers she seeks.
If you haven’t read Dragon’s Gift: The Huntress series you can jump in without being completely lost, but I highly recommend that you take the time to go back and read it because then you’ll have a better understanding of the dynamic between all of the characters, not just Del, Nix and Cass.
~ Copy received from the author & voluntarily reviewed ~
Hunted for being a FireSoul, Del thought life was dangerous enough. Now she has to deal with some deadly new powers, and her own Grim Reaper trying to drag her back to hell.
I received a free copy in return for an honest review.
First of all - yes, this is the first in The Seeker's series, but this CANNOT be read before The Huntress series. The story moves along somewhat independently, but there is a lot of background information that is established in the previous books, and this should be read as no. 6 in the Dragon's Gift series. Oh yeah, and there's a huge effing spoiler about the end of Infinite Magic, so you have been warned.
We finally get a book from Del's perspective, and I was relieved that it picks up the Dragon's Gift story where the last book left off (I always find rehashes of the same story from a different perspective a little tedious - you already know where it's going. So I was happy this as covering new ground).
After dying, Del finds herself in hell, and she resolves not to stay there. She uses her unique magic to escape and becomes the first person in history to return to the land of the living. But the Warden of the Underworld isn't happy, and personally tracks her down, and get her back to hell. The plot is all about Del, and her quest, which takes us to new magical locations, and new dangers. I was so pleased that Del was getting a fully-fleshed adventure, rather than being the pawn that moves the Dragon's Gift along.
Our main characters are pretty awesome. Del is a sword-wield, demon-hunting magica with the ability to become a phantom. The warden, Roarke, is a were-demon with enough power to make the kings of hell back down and obey. They are a very good match and... you can see where this is going. As happy as I was for Del to get a love interest and be centre-stage of this story, it does feel like an echo of what's already happened between Cass and Aidan. The male character is another rich, super-powerful being; they keep a professional distance whilst growing emotionally closer; there's the inevitable secret-keeping, because no-one can know that Del is a FireSoul. But if you can overlook all that, it's still a very enjoyable story and well worth reading.
Magic Undying by Linsey Hall Dragon’s Gift: The Seeker Book #1
What fun! Del is definitely dead, or so everyone assumes, until she wakes with a heartbeat and the need to escape the underworld. Once out she is not safe and has poisoning to overcome, a demon to locate and the Warden of the underworld to contend with. Her friends are there to help out should she need them but most of Del’s time is spent with Roarke, the warden.
Roarke is gorgeous, strong, smart, wealthy, lethal and intrigued by Del and yet he still plans to return her to the underworld since she died AND rules must be followed. Del is attracted to Roarke but has no desire to return to the underworld. She is attractive, lethal, smart, deadly, and has plenty of secrets she does not want out. She also is tied to death in ways that are yet to be explored.
This book is a great introduction to the next set of books in the Dragon’s Gift series and, if possible, I believe I like Del and Roarke together better than I liked Cass and Adrian. I am eager to see what will happen when Nix meets her match in the future.
I love a book that makes me think and this one did. With Arthurian legends, Greek mythology and crossovers into other belief systems and mythologies this had me thinking about “what if” and also the idea that many times what one believes “is”. What is the afterlife and is it the same for everyone? Is immortality a possibility? What is or could be resurrection? Could there be dragons and other supernatural beings out there? If I “believe” could that impact reality? Hmm…anyway…this was a great story and fun to continue contemplating even though I have now finished the book.
Thank you to the author for the copy of this book. This is my honest review.
I was very happy that Linsey Hall kept going with her stories involving the crew from the Dragons Gift Series. This series has Del as the narrator instead of Cass. I liked the change and it is nice to get some of Del’s story. Del wakes up in Hell. Definitely not what she expected. With her Phantom form she is able to escape the underworld but she definitely did not expect the Warden to come after her. Unfortunately during her escape she was injured. Even more unfortunate is the fact that now she has to find the demon that injured her in order to get a cure. Roarke Fallon is more than he seems. When he shows up to return Del to the Underworld, he got more than he bargained for. She will do everything she can to not return. He definitely did not expect the adventure he was getting ready to embark on. After all he is The Warden, and he always gets his way and follows the rules. I am looking forward to more in this series. I cannot wait to see what else happens with the Crew. This was a quick read and was perfect for a cold night and a cup of coffee. Thank you Linsey Hall for your stories. I am giving this one 4 strong stars!
Book 1 in ‘the seeker’ (Del’s story) mini-series within the Dragon’s Gift series, begins where the original mini-series ‘the huntress’ (Cass’ story) ended. Del, mortally wounded in the last book, wakes in the underworld. From there she manages to escape, and accidentally lets out a dangerous demon in the doing. Pursued by the Underworld Warden, Roark, she has to find the demon and send him back... As with the other books in the series, this is an action packed treasure hunt through mythological and historical places. This time though, it’s Del’s turn to learn more about who and what she is, although so far we have more questions than answers. This enjoyable ride is far from over, and although there is no cliffhanger, the book does set up the following book. Recommended for those who enjoy urban fantasy and classic fantasy stories.
Oh I didn't think I'd like this one as much as Cass' story but this is only book 1 and I'm already hooked. In Cass' story, she seemed vulnerable where Del and Nix always seemed confident and in control. I'm very happy to see Del also has a soft, vulnerable and insecure side. In Del's story, Nix and Cass seem strong and confident and I'm seeing that this is from the main character's point of view, which is great! They all apparently see each other as strong confident women, but each feels inferior to the others. I'm guessing when I read Nix's story, it will be about the same for her. Yet they all know they can trust and count on each other. Awesome 😊
Of course the moment we read that the Warden is amazingly powerful, male, and not necessarily evil, it’s obvious he’s going to be Del’s romantic interest (I’ve mentioned before that the series is a bit formulaic). That’s okay; it’s a formula that works, and the characters do have chemistry. Roarke, the Warden of the Underworlds, quickly starts to fall for Del even as he tries to return her to where she belongs (having died and all). Del, for her part, finds herself starting to trust Roarke. But her powers are getting stranger and stranger as the story goes, and people with powerful and unusual abilities are supposed to be turned over to the Order of the Magica–and Roarke is all about following the rules.
I’ve read Dragon’s Gift: The Huntress (5 Book Series) too recently–I can’t say for sure whether this book provides enough information that you could come into it cold. Certainly these books should remain available as ebooks, and at the moment at least they aren’t expensive, so there’s little reason not to go back and read that series first. I certainly found it enjoyable.
Del and Roarke have to hunt down a super-powerful demon that escaped on Del’s heels. If they don’t, the demon will cause a lot of destruction and Del will turn into a demon, herself. The hunt takes them to Merlin’s Cave (!) and then Guinevere’s tomb. As a side note here, Guinevere is known by the old Welsh spelling of her name. Anyone who is familiar with the Arthurian legend–which is nearly everyone who reads fantasy–will know immediately that we’re talking about Guinevere. But none of the characters recognize the name, and even a Google search done by the characters turns up nothing. Uh, seriously? Please don’t underestimate the intelligence of your readers. (Since I’m picking nits now, I’ll mention that there’s still no explanation as to why everyone would rather use swords and bows with arrows than guns.)
It’s really neat to see the new and unusual powers that get triggered in Del as she goes along, and it’s fun to watch her struggle to control them. Clearly there’s more of this to come in the sequels, and I’m looking forward to it.
This is a fun series with some seriously kick-ass women in it, and I’m enjoying the ride. The fight scenes in particular are very well-executed and tense!
I blasted through that book incredibly fast, which is partially owed to the fact that it is really short, but also because it makes a fun read. People who enjoyed the Huntress will also enjoy the Seeker as the series revolving around Del is basically a carbon copy of Cass'.
Like in the first Huntress' book, Del is forced to work together with an incredibly powerful supernatural (after the Origin comes the Warden of the Underworld, a Were-Demon). Because he is a stickler for rules, she tries to hide the full extent of her powers from him, as she fears that he will turn her in. This time around not only because of her FireSoul, but also her Half-Phantom side. If they had gone after an artifact instead of a demon, this would have been the same book. But fear not, instant attraction comes to the rescue and int he end he decides to help keep her secret.
I had hoped that changing the lead would add some depth to the sisters, to make telling them apart easier. But in essence they still behave exactly the same, with the exception of Del's superstition and therefore constant knocking on wood or carrying around a lucky charm. That idiosyncrasy is actually pretty annoying.
The second series has basically the same problems as the first series. There are a lot of fight scenes that are all the same and the use of her powers is kind of inconsistent (while fighting she approaches enemies in phantom form and then turns corporeal long enough to chop their heads off, which suggests she has enough control over those powers to turn them off and on in a split second, but whenever she is threatened it takes forever).
Again there is a lot of traveling back and fourth between places. Since Del lost her transportation powers at the end of the Huntress series, Roarke's ability to travel through the Underworld comes in handy (what, no plane to show how filthy rich you are, shame).
Well, at least the hell hounds are back. And I really enjoyed the bits about Arthurian legend. Though why creating a charm to hide from the rest of the world in a monastery for the rest of ones life is empowering is a little bit of a mystery to me.
Interestingly enough I liked these main characters less than I liked the Huntress ones.
A new series in the Dragon's gift series. It's sort of inception. Serie within a serie. Anyway. It makes sense to begin a new serie, as this serie is from Del's perspective. Del is a FireSoul which is a no no in the magic community. She has her Deirfiúr who are Cass and Nix. Cass was the main person in the previous series.
So this starts with Del being in the Underworld and attempts to escape. The Warden who is a Were-demon hunts her, and realise that Del has released a dangerous demon on the earth. So instead of dragging Del back to the Underworld, they now hunt the demon together. With the promise that once they are finished, Roarke (the Warden) will drag her back to the underworld, where she belongs. Del of course disagrees, and in her mind promises to find a way out of the Underworld, because she is convinced that she's still all living with a beating heart, and therefore does not belong to the Underworld. That was the essence of the story.
There is an obvious love interest between Roarke and Del. It reminded me too much of Cass and Aidan. The love interest has so many similarities, that it feels like reading the first series with Cass again. There is a bad scary guy, girl is too independent and can not have a love interest in her life. They are still attracted to each other, even though they don't want to be. Okay there the small difference is. Aidan was all way into Cass from the very beginning and he wasn't hiding it at all. But that's where the differences stop.
Del is also prophesied to do something great relating to the death just as Cass learned that.
The writing was less annoying that the previous series, which almost drove me crazy. I think the plot will be good. But maybe it's a little too slow or maybe I have read the Dragon's gift books too close to each other. Maybe a break from this series will do me good. But nevertheless, I will be reading the next book. Because I just can't help it. I need to know more! So in that way, the plot is quite good, since I can't leave it alone.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
From what I understood, this is the fourth book in the series of the overall Dragons Gift ....but it's also the first? I get that it's the first for Del's series, but it's written as if it could be the first for anyone who can read it.
This sort of annoys me because then it becomes incredible repetitious, which was my issue with the last 5 books. It got better towards the end with Cass's storyline but I didn't expect the next in the series to - in a sense - start all over. The book could be 20+ pages shorter without all the constant repetitions and introductions.
Another big thing is that this is written in first person. This would be fine but it should have been with more of Del's voice. Cass's story was written and she had her own voice/she had the advantage because she was the first of three to be written about. With Del, it seems you can just switch the names and power and boom, you have Cass. It makes the characters seem all the same and that Del isn't as interesting as her power is (which is quite amazing tbh).
Last thing I have to point out is my annoyance at the Warden. I'm annoyed because he sorta pulls a 180 in the span of two pages at the end of the book. It's very rushed what he does with Del and I wish it was drawn out more into the second book. In the version of the book I had it had two chapters of the next book and it does seem to draw out more but that doesn't excuse this first book...it's just weird.
THOUGH I am giving this book a 3/5 stars because it has a good story in between all the above. I do like Del trying to figure out her powers and having her grow but still letting her be confused because obviously nothing makes sense to her. And I do like the protectiveness of Nix over Del because they are family/sisters. It brings more of a "togetherness" especially because of what happened in the last book to Del.
I really want to support this series of three women who come together and fight. I love the urban fantasy aspect since it's so hard to find any books that have multiple main female characters, it's really amazing. Though I do hope one day there will be one where love/marriage isn't a huge part of it and maybe more of a side view/not even cared about. And I will keep reading it but I just wish the above was taken into account more.
I actually read the series backwards, not realizing until I was two books into the Dragon's Gift Protector series that Del and Cass had their own stories. Cass' was fine, but I stopped reading her series because I was very interested in how Del, a demon hunter, would fall in love with Roarke, a half-demon.
While the book was entertaining, like many Lindsey Hall books I felt like there was actually too much action going on. There was hardly any breaks from someone not attacking or something not going on. Also Del reads as a very immature character. She uses phrases like "What the heck" and "Dang it" which, I feel 25 year olds (as one) would probably cuss in those situations.
That didn't turn me off from the book completely, but was a little annoying to read over and over. She seemed fine to cuss sometimes, but other times came off as more of a high schooler. She also acts really immature and has some idiosyncrasies (like knocking on her head) that I felt were very childish.
I went back to reading Nix's series, (which so far is my favorite because I feel like she reads the most mature) after finishing the first book.
There are 15 books covering the Dragon's Gift Series. 5 for Cass, the Huntress. 5 for Del, the Seeker, and 5 for Nix, the Protector. Best to rsad them in that order. The author does a great job in tying the books together. I've read the 5 Cass books and the first one of Del's books. I'm looking forward to reading #2 of Del's books and all the rest. All are Kindle Unlimited books, which is cool. I'm loving the series. I was only going to read the first 5 this month, the next 5 next month and the last 5 the month afterwards. But I'm obsessed with finding out what happens. The women are Firesouls, and get their magic from extinct dragons. Firesouls are considered outlaws because they can kill a supernatural and steal his/her magic. Our women don't do that, as most other Firesouls don't. But the "government" fears Firesouls so they have to hid that part of themselves or be sent to prison or be executed. They also have enormous magic and seem to be destined to save the world. It's fun finding out how they are going to do that. A really good series. I highly recommend it!
I’ve read several series by Linsey Hall (yes some out of order). This is so far my least favorite. Not really sure why. I still love the world she created. I think it’s just that I don’t love the main characters like I have in her other books. Del is fine. She has quirks that annoyed me a little or that I just didn’t understand. Her obsession with luck I think is the biggest thing. Knocking her head for knock on wood, CONSTANTLY, every shirt is a “lucky” shirt along with necklaces. I just, I don’t know it doesn’t go with the whole magic world. Then there’s Rourke who is this bad a demon and I really liked him except for his totally following of the rules. He says he became the Warden of the Underworld bc he knew the Order of Magica would come after him other wise bc he’s different. So why is he such a stickler for following the governments rules when they are persecuting those that are different, like him? I’m hoping the series gets better for me.
This is the first book in the Seeker series: Del’s story. I feel like you could pick this up without having read the Huntress series (Cass’s series) and still enjoy it, although I prefer to read books in order.
The reason I couldn’t rate this higher is that it feels formulaic. In the previous books we see Del as a badass Demon hunter. In this book we see her insecurities, and I feel like there are a lot of them. More than I expected after getting to know her in the other series, and she feels a little more “whiny” than I expected her to. Not in her dialogue to other characters but in the narration.
The romance story line is pretty much the same as the previous series: she’s isolated and trusts only her sisters. Meets a hot rich guy that she’s not sure if she can trust. It’s not insta-love, but there’s no doubt where this story is going.
Sometimes a story is a perfect fit for that moment in your life. This is one of those stories. At a time when I was questioning things in my present and future I popped the cover of Magic Undying.
The tale was a great fit for my needs of the moment. Our heroine escapes dying (or does she?) in the first few pages... and continues on while trying to figure out why. While I do not have her magic nor her fate I understand the conundrum all too well, a dance with a pulmonary embolism granted me a close up on mortality and then similar questions.
Thanks for a rousing thinking person's adventure tale. Especial thanks for the historical clarifications in the afterword, it added a special something extra that I greatly appreciate.
This follows on from her other series, Dragon's gift: The Huntress. I actually like this more. I am not a spin off series reader. I usually hate them but this is better than the first. Im hooked. Going to start the 2nd book now.
Its funny, you root for Del almost straight away. I like how she thinks Cass and Nix are better than her but Cass thinks Del and Nix are better than her so they are humble even tho they are powerful. With Cass I found her too powerful. Too special. Del is watered down shes a kick butt powerful woman but she isn't too powerful. I like her. And I am intrigued by Roarke (possibly misspell)
As I start this second series centering on Del's story, I'm finding the excitement building as she discovers more about her strange Phantom talents. Oh, and then there is Roarke, Warden of the Underworld. Keeping her secret of being a FireSoul is seriously going to be tough with him around, but oh the steam! Now that the Ubilaz demon has literally had the soul ripped out of him by Del, the strange prophecy about Del's part being the Guardian of life and death will I'm sure continue to play out. Looking forward to that for sure as we know the girls all have a part to play. Well now on to book two! Can't wait to see what happens.
I think this one is my favorite book so far. I loved Del and Roarke, and I was glad that the majority of the book was just the two of them without Cass and Nix, because we got more understanding of what’s going on with Del and also more time to develop the tension between Del and Roarke. I also really loved the intertwining of the King Author myths. Kind of makes me want to go look into some of those myths myself, because it provides a fantastical explanation for some of the real life mysteries. This books definitely felt more magically focused, and did a bit more as far as setting the tone for the characters personalities and mindsets. I highly recommend it.
I love the new spinoff! It still includes all of the same characters, but Del is leading the way with her new found destiny. Meeting Roark, the Warden of Hell, changes everything. The unlikely pair, along with help of her friends set out on a dangerous quest that could mean life or death. I'm not one to leave spoilers...but I must say, this new series has my mind reeling! With everything that was revealed in the book, Del has her work cut out for her, but nothing's impossible. I can't wait to read the next book! I give this a well-deserved 5 stars!
Del wakes up in the Underworld. She has to get out of here. So she does what the 3 does and follows her dragon sense. While breaking out she accidentally lets a demon out that scratches her and takes off. When she gets home her friends are so excited to see her. Connor tells her that the demon is poisonous and now she has to find it or become one herself. The Warden tracks her and threatens to take her back to the Underworld. She tells him that she will track down the demon. Let the adventures begin.
