Welcome to Petrasada. The City of Light. The City of Clouds. The City of Joy. It is the last bastion of human life floating miles above an endless desert world.
And a string of serial murders are threatening to tear the city apart.
Anelia Orba is the newest rookie in the magical winged police force of Petrasada. She is inexperienced, naive, paired with a resentful partner, and fully expected to fail. But when a strange clue takes Anelia off the procedural path, she'll have to overcome the odds before the City of Light falls to darkness, and she loses everything she cares about.
I enjoyed this one a lot more than I thought I would! Despite some flaws I go with 4* as I had a lot of fun reading it.
It has kind of a YA flavor (though they drink much beer for that and there is a mention of whores), it also has UF elements even though it is set in a secondary world without modern things and it also reminded me a bit of NCIS.... The world itself is a strange mix of medieval, urban, magical, mundane, unique and tropey - and somehow it works. It should just feel off, but instead it made for a cool new setting to explore!
The voice of the main character is strong and worked perfectly well for me.
The story itself is fast paced and fun, but some parts of the writing made me go MAD! Here's the bad: It uses "the blonde woman" 28 freaking times. (and once "the big blonde woman") Most of the time it uses the name and rank, but particularly in the last third it is "the blonde woman this, the blonde woman that" - and apart from the repetitivness, why are they all blond?) In one single scene instead of using the name of a character it reads in that order: woman, girl, woman, girl, woman, woman.
The character also had some problems: She is the new girl on the job. Almost didn't make the cut to be a potentia (special polic with magic cloak that allows flying), yet while her experienced colleagues fail, she is the only one who sees clues! And then of course does not tell anyone, but goes off on her own... Even though she almost failed fencing classes she singlehandedly defeats all kkinds of opponents...
So now I have said so much bad things about the book - and yet I ended up really liking it anyway! The fast pace and interesting story just kept me hooked, and the different world and mystery entertained me very well all the way through. So I still give full 4* for pure enjoyment, although grudgingly.
I was raised on comic books and buddy cop movies. It’s a genre I love in a pure way – I tend not to overanalyze it. Wings of Justice is, at heart, cop buddies novel. It’s just the cops are gals with magically enhanced cloaks (Alulas) that transform into wings. Also, they have some kick-ass fighting skills and slightly heightened senses.
A rookie Potentia (cop) – Anelia Orba is paired with, a resentful and experienced partner who, seemingly, hates her and dreams about making her fail. She manages to get into troubles on the first day of her service. While her partner doesn’t treat her suspicions seriously, Anelia falls on the track of a string of serial murders that may be threatening to tear the city apart.
At 200 pages the book is short and the pacing is really fast. As the story grabbed me from the first page I finished the book practically in one day. While the story isn’t most complex, it’s far from simplistic. It seems much more is happening in the city and some prominent figures may have hidden agendas.
It’s possible monsters live beneath the city. Someone adds a drug to beer. A drug that can transform people into strange creatures devoured with drug hunger.
The set of characters was refreshing – the police force is all female and it’s a set belief only women can do magic. A belief that’ll be challenged, mind you. Anelia is naïve and hotheaded but also resourceful when it’s needed. She learns quickly. Her recklessness may be frustrating at times, but I think she’s done well. She didn’t feel flat to me and it was easy to like her.
Happily, there’s no romance in the book, however, things suggest it may eventually happen in the sequels. I hope not, but I have a bad feeling it’ll come to this. Meh.
The world-building is rather good. We learn about the world, well, the city of Petrasada as we travel through it. What we learn is enough to imagine the place and feel intrigued. It’s done really well – I mean it’s new place but I was transported there in a blink of an eye. The story and world-building were connected seamlessly and the author managed to refrain himself from info-dumping or overwhelming reader with world history and geography.
The prose is good andlight. It never gets in the way of the story. Sentences are mostly short and crisp. Some descriptions are done very well – for example, the moment when one of Potentia falls from the sky. Check it.
Overall, it was a great short book. It ends with a cliffhanger which is always rude. I don’t mind though, because as soon as the sequel is available, I’ll read it.
Another winning book from one of my new favorite authors! I totally love M-S Earle's The Destroyer #1 and decided to connect with him. (I've never connected with any author before this.) When he asked for ARC readers of a new series, I, of course, immediately volunteered! I wasn't disappointed! I LOVE this new series! Anelia and her training partner are tasked to figure out who killed an innkeeper. There's been a series of murders occurring throughout the floating city of Petrasada and maybe, some fresh eyes will solve this. This is the first day on the job for Anelia as a police officer (known as a Potentia). The Potentia are an all female police force. They have limited magic and wear a cloak called an Alula that allows them to fly. The Potentia think about flying and the cloak changes into a pair of wings and allows them to fly throughout the multi-level floating city. Anelia's training partner, for some reason, dislikes Anelia and makes it very difficult to investigate the murder, so Anelia starts following clues on her own, which lead her into some unexpected places and much danger. If you expect all the lose ends to be connected up, then this book isn't for you. If you love looking forward to the next book in the series to learn more about this interesting world, then this is the book for you. Does the murder get solved? Yes. Are there more questions and mysteries? Definitely, and I look forward to solving them in the next book of this exciting new series!
LOVED this book. I'm a huge fan of the Destroyer series, and this book didn't fail to dissapoint. Great characters, fun fantasy with lots of police procedural stuff thrown in. I read through it in one sitting - definitely recommend!
I think I saw this on a list of SPFBO finalists, although I can't find my list right now, so I could be wrong.
What I liked about this was the quick pace, the police procedural details, the flying lizards, and for the most part, the character of Analie. The whole idea of the cloak that could turn into wings was fun, although I got a little bogged down in the many descriptions of what it could do.
What I didn't care for as much was how quickly her partner Fallon changed from being a witch, to being her friend. Right now I'm likening her to the Grinch's transformation, without the epiphany, or the music. I'm also not enjoying either of the twin bad boys; I thought their magic was cool, but I really don't want to see either of them turn into love interests for our main character, although that seems to be where the story is headed. I am intrigued with the Priestesses, but probably not enough to carry on with the series.
No spoilers… Wow! What a read. This story started out at a canter and just didn’t slow down; if anything it occasionally revved up to a gallop, but never really dropped below a canter. It gripped me and kept me in thrall until the last page. I loved it. The world building is superb, and unlike many ‘new’ worlds, doesn’t take any getting used to. It’s seamlessly wound through the story, in such a masterful way – you’re transported there within a blink of an eye. I didn’t have to read anything more than once to get my head around it. It was beautifully done. I want more of it. The characters, well, they are just out of this world. You want to be the heroine, you’d love to hook up with the bad/good guy… I can’t wait for book two, yet everything that needed to be wound up in book one was. There were no parts left hanging, no questions unanswered, yet there were a few hints that make you desire the second book immediately. I’m smiling as I write this, because I know M-S has yet to get the next one out, and it’s killing me. What I didn’t like: Not a thing. Nada. Zip. It’s perfect just the way it is, I just want more.
This is the first book I've read by this author and I am not disappointed. I was hooked in under twenty pages and read it straight through. I'll try to sum it up without giving too many spoilers.
Anelia has a new job as a Potentia. Potentia's enforce the laws of their land. Only females can be given this job by the priestesses. Fallon is her partner and has been in the business many years and isn't fond of a newbie. While trying to solve murders, Anelia meets many new people, not all friendly, some mysterious, some who use magic, and more. I'll leave the spoilers at that.
The world building in this book is amazing- takes you right into the world. The story is fast past and keeps you engaged- good luck putting it down. While there are quite a few characters, there are not so many you feel overwhelmed and each is unique. This could be a stand alone book but you don't want it to be- it leaves you wanting more.
Should you read this book? Absolutely. I can't wait for the next installment.

I absolutely loved this book! It's a really good sci-fi mystery. Anelia is a rookie Potentia who is faced with a murder case on her first day on the job. She isn't helped by being partnered with a surly, resentful veteran and ends up investigating on her own. There is obviously so much more going on than the murders. Things that involve unknown magic and the priestesses who run the Potentia. I am looking forward to reading the second book. All ages!
This was my first Michael-Scott book and I was hooked from there on! If your looking for a great book to sink your teeth into this is for you. The main character will draw you in and you will finish wanting more.
This review is for the Audio Book, your results may vary I have 4, ...nope now 3 MSE books that I've left unread for a rainy day. Yesterday was that day. I started and quit 4 books that just seemed calculated to aggravate from page one. So I broke down and opened the emergency reserve of never been read my me MSE.
My first big surprise is that Michael-Scott Earle wrote a female protagonist. Shes pretty good. The Audio Book narrator isn't pretty good. I'm making an effort not to pan the book because the narrator was a rookie (not sure I could have done any better ) but it was an uncomfortable and wince inducing performance that did effect my perception of the book. The story itself isn't that bad and it's set in an interesting fantasy world. A winged rookie detective on a floating city assigned an intolerant partner and then charged with solving a string of violent murders that have ties to the cities hidden underworld. sure I'll give that a try. The case and the clues were a bit muddled, but that might have been the narrator mispronouncing common english words. So it's a fun mish-mash of a lot of elements and tropes. Some of these I haven't see in so long they are almost like new again. There is nearly non stop action even when you might have taken a quick break for pacing at least one or twice. And very important, the MC is a likeable fairly well rounded person. It was Okay. pretty good. I finished without skipping any pages, but I can barely remember the MC's name and the details of this book are fading mere minutes after finishing.
3.5 stars. A really interesting debut to a new series. The setting is in a post-apocalyptic themed world where magic is a thing and religion is the de facto government. We get too follow a rookie officer of this worlds police force. She quickly gets in over her head and the plot is very interesting. The audio book was great and very engaging, very well written and peeks your curiosity fiercely. There wasn't much world building and not much was explained. No real unique magic system or world building it was nevertheless a really good book. However if you are looking for something truly unique with great world building and no assumptions that you as the reader will fill in the blanks. Then this is not for you. Still I urge you too give it a shot. I think it has a lot of potential for a truly interesting series, it just needs more work on the world and more character building. With exception for the mc the rest of the characters where extremely flat and there was almost no info on them at all.
Dropped this around the half way mark. It never really clicked with me and when our MC starts dealing with a criminal rogue type (who ofc is super handsome) I could only roll my eyes. Ofc I know that he probably actually is a good guy working against the oppressive system but that doesn't mean that he didn't already try to kill our MC. I instantly figured out that he would be our love interest when he randomly described the mc as pretty. Standard asshole love interest that plagues most YA series with female mc's.

This was an interesting story told in a personal viewpoint around a heroine who is experiencing the mystery of a lifetime on her first day on the job. The story moves fairly quickly, and it incorporates elements of mystery, fantasy, and a dash of steampunk in a city that feels almost dystopian. There are plenty of chase scenes and sword fights as well as plenty of bad guys and even a few monsters.
An enjoyable cop story with fantasy elements and a female MC, but it dragged in places where it shouldn’t. I saved this story in my KU as I wait for MSE to be reinstated on Amazon, hopefully soon. The cape which turns into wings is interesting as is the floating city, but it was never really detailed, and the layered city and levels were also not explained enough to make me feel comfortable with how it all worked.
I am glad to see that MSE is publishing again - but I hope that this book is not an example of what I can expect. This book was meh (1.5 starsish), but lacked that something that make Tamer, Star Justice, etc. work for me. I had a hard time getting into this book or even giving a shit about the characters - any of them. I've signed on the new Tamer Kickstarter, but if this book is an example of what I will receive in the new Tamer, then perhaps it is time that I stop reading MSE's books.
Earle has created a singular world in this wonderful novel, a city that floats in above a world, guarded by angels. Even angels have problems enforcing the law and preserving the good citizens. Even angels can die...
Interesting setting, but the main character was way too overpowered (especially considering, she was supposed to be the bottom of the barrel) and I didn't enjoy the book much. Especially not the unexplained stuff and the cliffhanger ending.
Finally read this and it was a nice fast piece of investigation work with good amounts of action and thrills with some further mystery to continue further in the series. 4 stars as its been stopped and probably going to be a stand alone novel rather than a series.
A great first book of the series. Quickly defines the main character and defines the creative premise early. If you are into good science fiction stories with slowly developing intimate relationships, give this series a try.
I really enjoyed this book and the premise of the plot and characters. It's such a Shame that this one wasn't received as well as Mike's other writing. 😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞
Sorry this one is a DNF. I have found most of the books by this author very enjoyable and well worth the read. This one not so much for me. I may try it again but for now it is a DNF.
Michael-Scott Earle tells of a floating city with potentia’s with magical cloaks that serve as wings as required serving as the top police. Anelia Orba is a fledging who just received her cloak when she is thrown into an investigation of multiple murders and drugs new to the city. So in serving as Wings of Justice (paper) she is soon hunted by those who hate the Priestesses who rule the city. Raised as an orphan, she knows the lower sides of the city and that allows her to get deeper into the conspiracy than other pontentia’s even though that puts her constantlly at risk. Very exciting and hard to put down. I look forward to Anelia’s next case.Review printed by Philadelphia Weekly Press
I like the Anelia character. Even though she is green in her job she shows quickly developing competence and potential. Her partner Falon is an ass at first but further revelation contributes to Anelia understanding where she is coming from and Falon appreciating Anelia. Both twin handsome bad boys seem to be drawn to Amelia. Will they support her or destroy her? I will be reading the next book.
Mystery, sci-fi, cops and robbers, fantasy, whatever your favorite genre, this book is it. ! It has me soaring, I loved it. It captures the nervousness of a rookie paired with the competence of a well-trained soldier. Flying scenes are so vivid, I can almost feel the wind through my hair. Characterization and imagery are so solid, you will feel the joy of flight, the terror of prey, and the thrill of the hunt. There is even a hint of future romance ahead.
Unexpectedly good, I started this book because I've read just about every other book the author has written and he has yet to fail my expectations in his writing. This was an awesome book!
