I found it silly and boring. The characters are OK, but the romantic subplot feels forced. And the alien characters are cartoons. I won't bother reading the rest.
I found Ken Lozito through the "First Colony" series. I enjoyed that so I thought to give this earlier work a go. It's good but by no means great. This was an omnibus of the first three books of he series. The first book starts off as a sort of science mystery. The story is interesting but the characters are week and underdeveloped. There is some dimension, Lozito didn't make that mistake, just not much. It seems that a lot of time is spent on a teen level romance which wouldn't be too awful if the characters weren't in their thirties.
The second book in the series is were things came undone for me. There were two alien races introduced but they weren't very alien. They were just more undeveloped characters with green skin (or bark skin). I was so disappointed that I almost didn't read the third book in the omnibus.
The third book gets better. The characters start to develop, finally. The aliens are still not alien, but become more interesting. The story takes some interesting twists and leaves a nice set-up book four. I went from not wanting to read book three, to thinking about picking up the next installment. You can definitely see improvement in Lozito's style as the series progresses.
I read the reviews and wondered whether to give the Ascension series books 1-3 a shot and I am so glad that I did. Sometimes you can read a critical review that puts you off, but I liked the abstract of book 1 so I took a gamble.
The story is a slow burn at the start but if you stick with it the story speeds up, grabs you and does not ease up! The supporting Characters need to be developed further but you do grow to relate with the main characters and their humanity. I even liked some of the aliens who have real personalities. It's a shame they are all bi-peds; then again, I have only read books 1-3!
I am reading Psychology for my MSc and I have found the Ascension series to be a terrific way to get my imagination flowing whilst travelling to university.
Well done Ken and I look forwards to reading more of your other books.
When we meet people who don't look us, we go into survival mode. Strangely enough, so do the aliens. Trust has to be built. The stronger the distrust, the greater and more dangerous the challenge.Ken tells this story starting with an earth exploration of an anomalous structure and warning then transfers thru a black hole to another galaxy. Also, does the guy get the girl? Or two girls? Ken gives subtle hints an then closes down the different threads later. The story is enthralling and we end up rooting for all the good guys and girls and aliens as they go thru the trials of trust and torture. Thanks Ken for your well written and fun stories!!!!
I gave this 3 book series only 4 stars because I found the books to be unremarkable. The story-line is rather typical of a space adventure. I liked the characters, especially the main alien characters. The humans were mildly interesting and sometimes annoying. I read Mr. Lozito's "Genesis" series and gave it a much deserved 5 stars. Perhaps the author just got more skilled at his craft. If space adventure is your favorite type of sy-fy, you will probably like these books. I do think they are firm 4 star books. Enjoy!!
I really enjoyed these 3 books. The adventure is great, and I'm looking forward to continuing it. Ken Lozito does a fantastic job creating characters, plot, and flaws for each character and species that make the entire tale seem more believable.
Good introduction to a new set of characters and stories with a good pace and plenty of tension and emotion to keep you rooting for the heros. Ready for the rest of this page-turning adventure in book four.
A good read. The plot was thick enough to keep you going and enjoying the books but not so thick that it became convoluted by shooting off in too many directions. The first three set the table for, potentially, a great series.
This is the first serious si-fi book I have read since I was a teenager. All I can say is WOW!!! How anyone could put together a book such as this is beyond my immagination! Thank you for your efforts.😀
Wow... Just started the second book of this series
Great character development! Great story! I can't say enough. This is one of my favorite series to date, and that is saying something. I have read hundreds of books, this will go far once discovered.
I truly enjoyed the Ascension series. It is has great characters individual and group interactions. A definite 5 star rating in my mind. Read it you will like it.
Interesting take on the reasons we haven't heard from any other intelligent life out there. Engaging story and interesting characters and motifs, kept me turning pages late into the night.
It's fare I find myself invested in all the characters in a book so quickly! Engaging storyline combined with a near future technology and adventures in the galaxy just beginning. Can't wait to read the next in the series!
It’s fantastic to know that we are not alone in the universe and that there are other species of life to Learn about and share the wanders of intelligence, compassion and loyalty. These writings are the beginning s of new potentials into the development of humanity.
Very believable scenarios describe interstellar conflict and alliances
This book has it all: a love story, science fiction, military conflict, humor, very believable humans being very human. It is too complex for children but will be a great read for any adult age group.
This book had me engaged from the first chapter. The journey from the beginning to the end was exciting and thought-provoking! Great job! Thanks Ken Lozito
Easy read. Great story line. Leaves you wanting more. Characters that are relatable but also fascinating. Lots of action but with a compassionate twist.
I enjoyed this trilogy tho it left many questions unanswered so now I'm into books 4 - 6. Well written, good pace and lots going on to keep the pages turning.
