Kris Hess has more than enough on her plate. She's taking care of her sick father, struggling to make deadlines with her art, and keeping up with the bills. There's no room for dating unless it's for the long haul, and Kris's past experiences with women have left her full of doubts. Her relief comes from her weekly Dungeons and Dragons session with close friends. As Dungeon Master, this is one world she can actually control.

Lacey Jenkins is getting over heartbreak. She's still full of resentment over her emotional vampire of an ex. The sole joy in her life comes from her little terrier, Barkley. Yep, she's reached crazy dog lady status and she doesn't care if you know it. But she knows the only way to move on is to start meeting new people, and her coworker offers her the perfect opportunity. Nice, easy, and no drama.

Adventure comes easy while playing a game, but finding true love in the real world is quite a challenge. Are they up to it? It's a roll of the dice.

I read this about six months ago so details are fuzzy...

But, what struck me first was that I thought this story would be about video gamers when it's, in fact, about players of Dungeons and Dragons (a role playing table game). I don't know much about D & D so that part was interesting.

The story is unconventional as romances go in that 1) There's a hospice care situation depicted about a family member. It's an odd theme to share the stage with a romance but it was done well and 2) One of the leads is shown as needy, is called out on it, and actually acknowledges that aspect of herself.

That said, I remembered becoming less enamored with the story as it went on and *I* thought the ending climax that resolved the resolution was inappropriate. I think that same resolution will probably make a good number of people swoon though so it's down to personal preference.

A dog also brings out the warm fuzzies in this one so the story may appeal more to dog lovers.

Overall, I was entertained and I liked its differences but it was a little more than okay to me as reads go.

This was a delightful little book, and it feels as though it has a pretty specific audience, which, thankfully, I'm a part of. The Amazon description says: "You don't have to be a level 15 tiefling warlock (or even know what that is) to enjoy it!" While that's technically true, it would definitely help . If you're a woman who loves women, you know what Armor Class is, and you'd recognize quotes from Dune and The Fellowship of the Ring, then you're going to find a lot of joy and representation in this book. If not, you may find yourself making a scrunchy face as a number of references and situations sail past you.

For me, the nerd representation was what lured me to the title. We see so many lesroms about doctors and lawyers and CEOs, but I'm none of those things; I'm just a dork with Fine Arts degree I never use and a brain full of Douglas Adams quotes I never stop using, and this is one of the first lesroms I've read that features characters I might actually know in real life. I love that.

It's not perfect, though. There's the all-too-common breakup at the 75% mark, an ending that felt just a little too pat, the D&D scenes were only okayish, there were extra spaces between every paragraph (a la fanfic), and I'm still trying to figure out how Lacey made it to 30 without having any friends of her own to confide in. However. This was a sweet little story with a little bit of angst, a few tropes, and a premise that spoke directly to who I am. If it speaks to you, too, you'll probably enjoy it as much as I did.

The snippets of the DnD campagin in this book are the best part of it. Honestly, the couple is kind of boring, and their arguments don't feel real.

Like, for example --

So... yeah... Kind of fun as a trashy, throw-away read, but pretty blah overall.

Never before has rolling a character contained so much sexual tension...

The writing itself is alright, nothing too spectacular on its own, but it flew easily and it was a fairly quick read. As for the main event I'm sure everyone picked this book up for, Dungeons and Dragons. There was a bit less of it than I expected honestly. It is the main theme that's stretched out through the entire novel but we only get the look at the campaign around the start and at the ending of the book. I kind of wish we'd gotten more of it in between.

What I enjoyed the most is how the angst and drama was dealt with in this book. You know those classic fanfic tropes that you read about and yell at your book "Please just talk to each other for 5 minutes!"? This books throws them all at you. And then immediately resolves them because the characters do in fact act like adults and talk to each other and grow from that. It was so refreshing to read.

Now that's not to say that this book won't make you emotional. There is plenty of space for emotional journeys with Kris and dealing with her father's illness and even that was done well. I've lost a family member to cancer myself and her inner thoughts about it all, no matter how off or cruel they might look to an outsider felt so much on point.

One thing I found hilarious though is that on the page 3, at the very start, Kris (and later Lacey too) tell their friend "Might as well rent a U-haul and send out wedding invitations now (...) Just for the record, a lesbian being in the room with another lesbian doesn't automatically equal love and sexy times." followed by them meeting and immediately being unable to keep their hands off each other. It's not a bad thing but with such an introduction to the book I was a bit thrown off. As well as the U-haul joke, because there's a small time skip once they get together so it's more of a "how they met + growing established relationship" than a slow burn.

Overall, quite an enjoyable and well paced book. It's the only f/f book that has dnd out there that I know off and as someone who loves dnd I loved it too. I do believe you'll have fun even if you don't know much about dnd (most of it is explained) so don't hesitate to pick it up if it sounds fun to you!

Warnings for some biphobia (the main relationship is between a lesbian and a bi girl, and the lesbian does get called out for it multiple times by multiple characters) and some casual cissexism (which is never addressed). Oh and a few typos.

Games, drama and electric touches equals red hot romance. 4.5ish stars.

I'm pretty sure that I've read this book before. The story and characters were fresh in my memory. Not sure if this is a reissued edition or something else but, I loved it. Reading it for a second time was just as deeply charming as the first time.

Kris and Lacey meet under less than ideal circumstances. Each woman buckles under the weight of her own emotional baggage. Time spent together eases the burdens caused by a failed relationship and a father's terminal diagnosis. Love forms a magical bridge over these crushing troubles. Em Stevens handles the heavy issues of Critical Hit with a beautifully light touch. This novel is a lovely homage to the power of a lesbian romance.

Holy crap, on a cracker, this was marvelous. I truly enjoyed reading this novel, the romance was absolutely adorable. And don't even get me started on the amazing DnD aspects, I have so many new character ideas in mind.
So yes, it was Love at First sight, but this was a short book, and their dynamic worked so fluidly it is easy to forgive. And the fighting - OMG actually adult normal ways to deal with things!!!! It was such an amazing relief to read about a couple who can handle issues. I fell in love with both Kris and Lacey, and of course Barkley.

Can't argue she writes a good story, so thank you for that. She's written, what 4, by herself: I'm waiting for her to really write a humdinger that takes her to the next level - go on, Em, you can do it!

I dnf'd this one. It's just really hard as a bi person to read a book where the main impediment to the relationship is the bi person's love interest having to overcome their own biphobia. Like, that just feels super shitty to read about.

This started out cute, i was looking forward to the gaming backdrop with Kris being a DnD Dungeon Master. Their initial meeting was fun and the misunderstandings with Peter I liked though Peter comes off as a pushy a-hole who thinks he's a prize. After that it kind of went off the rails a bit for me.
I liked the two MCs to start with but as it went on they both ended up acting a bit immature or saying really hurtful things without really talking about the big things going on. Their relationship seems based on sex for 80% of the book. They jump into bed almost immediately and miss some big opportunities along the way to communicate. There are also a few of the sex scenes I felt were misplaced and made me cringe, one beginning with Kris' dad being admitted to the ICU and ending in a janitorial closet that the janitor knows they are in and likely can guess why. When they do apologize for bad behavior it seems like they are apologizing just to end the fights rather than actually growing as characters. These various mini fights and their actions made me start to dislike the MCs, especially Kris. We also learn very little about Lacey other than she apparently has money and a mini mansion.
The whole arc with Kris' dad being sick is so completely unrealistic. This may be because I have recent experience with someone close to me dying similarly last year so I how terminal cancer goes. If you don't know how it truly is, this is not it.
The third act drama just made me angry. Kris has to leave town suddenly for a work opportunity and gets an opportunity for promotion while shes in the main office only to have that be rescinded once the drama isn't needed anymore. The other part of this is that Kris left her Dad at a time when work should be last priority as he was getting to the end. No one would have left their dying father at this point and made me hate Kris a bit. Once she gets there the supervisor Marcy has zero compassion for the situation, I'm not sure why Kris would want to work with her ever after that let alone consider a position that would have her working with Marcy daily. After all that Marcy just kind of disappears with no explanation only to have one more scene where she suddenly cares about Kris' situation.
This one started out with promise but wasn't a good fit for me. Some of that may boil down to personal experience so please read other reviews. I have also read others by Stevens and liked them but unfortunately Critical Hit wasn't a hit for me.

Pretty good

I did enjoy this story, but I felt it could have used a little more work before publishing. For starters, there were some basic editing errors. Beyond that, I felt the author could have dug a little deeper with the emotional development of the main characters and their relationship. Everytime there is an argument, they have sex. Everytime they are sad, they have sex. I understand sex can be a bonding and healing element between two people, but I would have liked to see a few more deeper conversations between them in addition to the sex. I felt the ending was slightly rushed and that could have been beefed up a little. There seemed to be many instances where the author should have shown emotions instead of labeled the emotions. Also, there was very little interaction with secondary characters. Lacey has a brief lunch conversation with James a couple times, and once with her ex. Kris doesn't have any interactions with anyone else outside of D&D, not even with Peter who is her best and oldest friend. Even the conversations with her dying father are a brief few comments about books.
Although it seems I have only criticized, I did like the overall storyline. I'm just glad that it was available through Kindle Unlimited because it wasn't the same caliber as some more involved books.

4.5 stars. This is the first time I've ever left a written review, but this book touched on so many topics that are near and dear to my heart that I wanted to say some things about it. With that being said, this review is super personal. I am in no way a reliable novel critic and this is probably not useful for other readers to gage their interest in this book.

I loved all the nerdy pop culture references. Wizards of the Coast, Kobolds, NPCs, Tolkien, Dune. I have been playing d&d weekly with the same group of friends for years. I am also a crazy dog lady who is obsessed with my little terrier. I couldn't stop smiling at seeing myself and my interests in a lesfic novel. Not related to the story at all, but it also has my favourite cover of all time. I'll probably be buying the physical copy just for the cover alone.

I do have some slightly nitpicky things that kept me from a full 5 stars though. For example, it was stated that the d&d group was playing 5e, however, on more than one occasion a Diplomacy check was requested... that's Pathfinder, not 5e. Also, Lacey once referred to Barkley as 'her' but then Barkely was a boy for the rest of the book. See, super nitpicky.

We’re not all super hot doctors and lawyers, and I loved seeing myself represented in this book.

Wonderfully done in parts

I very much enjoyed this book! The characters had depth and nuance, their positive qualities as well as their flaws and all the little aspects of commitment and communication and emotional intimacy that make up a relationship are beautifully explored! Kris and Lacey were wonderful characters, and is love to read more about them! The one problem for me, though, was easy to much of the sex-fixes-everything trope- in life and death situations, even. It just felt artificial. Maybe this is because I just don't love reading about sex of any variety (heterosexual sex with its too- often misogynistic tones is worse, so this was better in that the power dynamic was equal and both were very sex - positive), so it might just be personal preference, but it wasn't my favorite. Everything else about the book, though, I really liked!!!

Oh my gawd, that was so good! Everything felt so organic and the sensuality and sexuality was so well executed. I sobbed and I laughed. I'm not the biggest into DnD and stuff, but I love the story and the way the campaign was integrated. A great, fun read with characters that just touch the heart.

I especially love that everyone is flawed in some way or another. Lacey is very relatable for me, although I don't know if I'm so bad that I *have* to fix things like she did. David was such a great character and ugh, my heart.

I honestly feel like everything about this story was perfect. Imperfect and flawed characters who have a flawed, human relationship, and multi-dimensional side characters. Engaging and beautiful and just, I'm full of feelings right now. Definite recommendation.

This was an impulse buy, as I was intrigued by the dungeons and dragons theme to a lesbian romance.

Unfortunately the beginning of the book didn’t really ‘grab me’. I found it hard work to read, the story didn’t flow well because every thought or word was over analysed.
Then nearly half way through the whole nature of the book changed. I’m not sure how but Kris and Lacey suddenly went from being unsure about each other to a couple having sex every other page. Followed, inevitably, by the massive breakup.

I’m afraid at this point I felt a bit detached from the main characters and even though it wasn’t a bad story I wasn’t really enjoying it. However, I did complete the book and the ending was a little better.

This book gave me a feeling of nostalgia that left me with a smile on my face every time I turned a page. :)
I think that being a lesbian that played D&D a long time ago made it easier to fell in love with this book.
Even if one does not know anything about D&D, I think it is a good introduction to what is the game without immersing in technical and specific details. So I think readers that never played before would understand the story anyway, it won't be a problem.
There are lots of references to the Lord of the Rings and Dune. How not to love this book?
Highly recommend to any nerd, specially LGBT ones! :)

Critical Hit is a sweet love story that seems to hit on the nature of relationships and the baggage that goes with them. No hero's in just a kilt in this one(thankfully) but rather nerdy girls who play D & D. They are brought together by one of the girls male friends. You have to read it for the rest.

It is not a plot that is unique but no one reads romance to think. The characters are believable and the love vs. loss entanglement in the plot helps the story along nicely.

Puppies, Gaming, friends trying to get the attention of the newbie. the characters, the life of two people in a space that they both need someone but do not actively know so. Lacey loves her new puppy, who Kris's dad also loves.
Kris with her weekly game night to help with the events in the life, her friends who help.
Once the two acknowledged the attraction and decide to move forward the bumps that they have to navigate was interesting and a joy to read.

So well written.

This has surprised me so much. The way the emotional issues each girl brings into the relationship was so well done The lesbian who has mosgivings about bisexuals The two very different personalities. The way lust and desire to get laid can throw all your misgivings out So impressed.

4.5, only because the inevitable bit of drama annoyed me.

Love love love all the geek. Never felt like too much, and personally I might would've liked more. Always have been interested in D&D, and between this and Community, I feel like I really need to give it a try!

Loved it. Going on my short list of faves.

Great book

This was a really good story.
The flow kept me engaged from the very start. I loved the DD gaming ...
The details about it were amazing.
The romance was nice. A bit quick but really good. I really liked how the emotions of this book were real and raw. It made me truly feel what the Characters were going through.
This is a must read for sure.

Lacey and Kris are a fabulous couple and compliment each other nicely. I liked that while both of them had the best of intentions neither one was too perfect. They come across as very real and that doesn't always happen. I know nothing of Dungeons and Dragons but I was able to follow the story just fine and even got into it a bit more than I thought I would.

A good read

This was a love story. I was a little hesitant because of the gaming, but that is just how they meet. There is laughter, sadness, and just the right amount of angst. A good read. Will read more books by Em Stevens.

I did enjoy this but I did not like how long it took to address one character's rampant biphobia. There were also a lot of grammatical errors especially for a book that starts with a grammar joke? It was cute and I enjoyed it. I cried and was happy for the HEA. What more could I ask for?

It made me laugh and cry and wish that I was in Kris' D&D group. I loved it and the only thing that held me up was knowing that a sad part was coming up and not wanting to ugly cry at work.
