When David Merrow is given the task of finding a suitable soup kitchen so his company can improve their PR, he realizes he needs help. He turns to Jason Garton, the owner of the coffee house that David visits every morning. Funny how it took David so long to notice all the food and beverages Jason gives away to the homeless. Because until then, Jason had been almost invisible.
But the more David learns about him, the more intrigued he becomes. There’s something about the selfless, lonely older man that pulls David in, and what began as work becomes so much more.
K.C. Wells lives on an island off the south coast of the UK, surrounded by natural beauty. She writes about men who love men, and can’t even contemplate a life that doesn’t include writing. The rainbow rose tattoo on her back with the words 'Love is Love' and 'Love Wins' is her way of hoisting a flag. This book is like a warm, cozy sweater. You put it on and all is right with the world. Also, you don't want to take it off.
Jason is lonely and depressed. He own a coffee shop and is dedicated to his business, but his flat is barren and he has nary a picture on the wall.
Every morning, David stops at Jason's coffee shop for an Americano and bacon bagel. Every morning David looks at (through?) Jason. But he doesn't really SEE Jason until one Saturday when he realizes that Jason gives away coffee and pastries to a few homeless men, veterans all of them, who come round his café.
Once David and Jason start talking, they become fast friends. Jason loves to cook, and David loves to eat. It's a match made in heaven.
David works PR for a law firm and his boss wants good publicity by having the firm support a homeless shelter. Jason happens to volunteer at a community soup kitchen for the homeless, and David joins him whenever he can.
This is a slower-paced story with a slow burn and a strong focus on the relationship. Jason and David are just cute together. There, I said it. CUTE. There's nothing wrong with being cute, y'all.
I loved that the age difference of approximately two decades doesn't matter to the men. What matters is that Jason wants David to be his first.
You read that right. VIRGIN ALERT, baby! Come to mama.
It's so hot when Jason finally gives it up, but it's sweet too. The MCs know how to communicate, so there's never any misunderstandings, no angst, just two guys meeting and falling in love. You have to wait for the steam, but it's better that way.
This one is all HEA and Christmas lights. And a kitten! Musn't forget the kitten.
P.S. Make sure your copy of the book has 12 chapters. That's where the magic happens.
P.S.S. All the LOVE for that cover! I want to strip that silver fox naked and never let him go.
2.5 stars rounded up because it's the holiday season.
Despite the yummy SILVER FOX, this was a "no" for me. It was comically innocent one minute then tongues-in-asses the next. The mix didn't work for me. Jack's low self confidence was disappointing and I actually never warmed to David.
This really is pure fluff and fans of KC Wells will surely enjoy it, but it did nothing for me. Bummer.
Hot and cold. Cold and hot. Luke warm... Yeah, I was all over the place with this story. I wanted to love it. I wanted to have my feet swept under me. But I felt a tug-o-war with the emotions. There was an inconsistency that bothered me. Looking at other reviews, it appears this could be a me-not-you situation. The guys were nice enough and I'm glad they found their HEA. BUT...I'm happy to be moving on.
*** 10 stars ! *** The cover is beautiful ! K.C. Wells has outdone herself on this one ! This lovely story is about Jason, 45, coffee shop owner, who has tamped down his feelings for men since his teens. Divorced with a grown son, he is lonely, empty. That is until David catches his eye. David is 30ish, a PR man for a prestigious Law Firm, and is always in a rush for coffee and a bagel. David is curious about Jason, with the salt and pepper hair and pale blue eyes, he's just what David likes. This cover is dreamy... the look in their faces... sigh
It's Jason's solid looks and calm demeanor that draws him at first. David is in need of a homeless shelter to donate to, for his firm, and a campaign to boost the Law Firm's image. While David learns by volunteering at Jason's favorite shelter, these sweet men find friendship and attraction. * This is truly a "slow burn" romance, with amazing anticipation and tender moments. There is no falling into bed right away, no cheating, and very low angst, as these older men just talk things out. We get to watch this romance bloom. Zero... Jason had a few BJs in high school, but since then - nothing. That first kiss with David seared Jason's soul. What do I do ? How do I do it ? Not to worry, because David began to court, to woo, to romance Jason; this awesome man that David wants. This is simply fabulous.
Two men who finally have found their "one", their other half. Breathtaking sexiness, where the full on sexual experience and first times for Jason, come later in the story. But OMG, it's worth the wait !
Heaps of sweet romance, a long term love found, and immense happiness for our amazing, deserving men.
A perfect Christmas tale ! Highly recommended ! ENJOY ! ===========================
This was such a sweet holiday read! Mild angst, slow burn age gap romance with a bit of steam in the end. Awww! I really liked David and Jason together - so many romantic moments made me sigh. I seem to be getting into holiday spirit this year. This was definitely a winner for me! Cute enjoyable story!
KC Wells was kind enough to provide me with a new and complete/final version of 'Saving Jason'. This version was the one KU should have had on file. I'll be reading the last few chapters again and will re-evaluate where I stand with the rating of this book :-)!! Said evaluation is of my own free choice; I just think it's fair.
A few rapid notes:
I would have liked to give this a higher rating as it started off with a lot of promise, but I felt like there were a few things that fell by the wayside, and toward the end, the novella just lost itself :-/.
Also, after all that buildup, while getting to witness the first time they had sex was HOT, I would have liked to witness , given the circumstances of Jason's backstory. It was mentioned and essentially dismissed into a very awkward, passive aggressive [read: abrupt] fade-to-black. It didn't work here.
Also, also :-P [I'm just punnin' ya], I wanted more from the HEA ... as much as there WAS one, I got the feeling it was hurried and unresolved.
Still, in spite of all that, I did enjoy the novella for what it was, which is why I gave it the rating I did :-).
Note: Seeing as this is a novella, I decided to KU this :-).
***** I have to have this book :-)!! Come to momma, my lovely! As the pièce de résistance, look at that cover. LOOK AT IT!!
4.5 stars from me for this lovely, sweet little slow-burn Christmas cracker, which I also had the pleasure of beta reading along the way.
Jason's story is fairly typical I assume for those guys at high school who were more or less certain that they were gay, but who were totally petrified of coming out of the closet. He ended up with a wife full of recrimination and extremely bitter about the waste of a marriage and their lives, but gained a son named Travis, who knew about his parents problems and the reason for their divorce and was cool with his father although he didn't see that much of him. Jason threw himself into making his coffee shop a success, and in turn lead a very lonely life but tried to give back a little of his good fortune with a free coffee and pastry to the many homeless veterans sleeping rough on the streets of the Big Apple. He also helps out at a homeless shelter, the Helping Hand. Jason is a good, kind and decent man, who deserves more from life than his current emotional wasteland.
One of his regular customers, David, has been tasked with making his employers look good as far as public relations is concerned, and when he suggests that all the staff helping out at the local homeless shelter would do that [and as an added bonus also bring him into frequent contact with Jason], David is very keen indeed to see the project through. I'll leave this one here.....enjoy!!
***please make sure you have the full version of this story from Amazon***
I'm starting to feel a little bit like Ebenezer Scrooge. I don't have anything particular against Christmas, or anything, but this Christmas story kind of fell flat for me. Saving Jason was ok, but I never really warmed to either MC. Their interactions felt stilted, and though I understand Jason's awkwardness stemmed from his inexperience, it failed to hold my interest. Everything just felt saccharine and superficial.
Jason, who is 45, only came out a few years ago, but then again he's not really out when the story begins. He had told a couple key people, but he never moved beyond being gay 'in concept' because of his guilt and depression over living a lie for so long. He spends pretty much all his time running his coffee shop and volunteering at a local soup kitchen. And David, who is much younger, hasn't really spent much time on the dating scene, either. So they were both trying to feel things out and I got bored watching them dance around each other.
I liked the focus on the homeless and how invisible they often are to all of us. I liked that Jason really cared. And through Jason, David also saw the city in a new light and started volunteering, as well. I thought that the story had potential, and parts of it really were sweet, but it just didn't wow me.
--------------- Review copy of Saving Jason was generously provided by the author, in exchange for an honest review.
A sweet, slow-burned holiday romance that involves a silver fox divorcé and a younger public relation guy. I appreciated that the relationship moved in a steady pace, as David and Jason started with friendship. David was interested with Jason but at first he didn't know much about the older guy; he didn't even know that Jason was gay.
Then Jason started to open up to David, they had dinner together (Jason cooked), they talked about their lives, they had dates (complete with the 'hallmark' of holiday romance, like the Rockefeller Christmas Tree) ... they DIDN'T immediately burned up the sheets! Heck, I enjoyed the romance build-up more so than the sex scenes (other people can call that HOT, I call it it meh, nothing new, moving on).
It was quite an angst-free warm story for your holiday season. The extra star is for David's thoughtful Christmas present because it made me go "awww-ing" when I read it.
3.5 stars for this sweet story. There was quite a slow build but by the time the full relationship began the story ended. This was a lovely romantic journey - I just wanted more heat !
A nice, sweet story, very likable main characters. Heart warming and romantic. A perfect read if you need something comforting, something that doesn't hurt at all.
The wonderful thing about Christmas stories for me at least, is the pure comfort I get from reading them. There’s something about the combination of sweet romance and Christmas wonder to make losing yourself in the story a pure delight. And that was certainly the case when I read Saving Jason.
This is the story of two men ever so slowly getting to know and appreciate each other before falling, hard. But even once the mutual attraction has been acknowledged through the sweetest (and hottest) of kisses, the seduction game remains tantalisingly slow and all the more enticing for it. And when these two men take their mutual attraction beyond kissing…. Let’s just say all of us should experience our first time as Jason does.
While I liked David a lot in this story I have to admit to a weak spot for Jason. The vulnerable older man totally captured my heart. He’s so sure he’ll never experience love, he’s resigned himself to being alone. He lives, he functions, he owns and runs a popular coffee shop and volunteers in homeless shelters; it’s a life, but like his apartment it is basic and bland. His slow awakening to life, opportunities, attraction, and ultimately love was a wonder to behold and a delight to read. He’s the sort of man you want nothing but the best for. If you could, you’d wrap him up in your arms and keep him safe. After all, Jason needs saving.
David goes on a journey on his own in this story. While it may be up to younger David to slowly lead Jason down the path of loving a man, it is through Jason that David finds himself opening up to the world. Not that he was bad or indifferent before Jason; it’s just that he wasn’t really paying attention to what was going on around him. When Jason opens his eyes, David is the first to do what he can to help.
There is never any doubt that these two men will come to their happy ending. There’s little to no angst in this story, and it’s wonderful. If you enjoy a May to December story, and/or a sweet Christmas story, and/or a first time lover story…in short, if you enjoy a story that will feel like a warm blanket and open fire on a cold day, you’ll want to read Saving Jason.
I won this ARC in a contest by the author for my reading pleasure in hopes of an unbiased opinion. A review was not a requirement.
4.5 stars! K.C. Wells really brought the romance in this charming Christmas story. Jason is a divorced man, who came out of the closet late but years later, still hasn't spread his gay wings. Yes, he's a silver fox and a virgin and we have an age gap! David is the lucky, lucky boy who finally captures his interest. But this is a romance, not erotica and it's a slow burn as David and Jason form a friendship first and take the time to build their connection. The steam comes late in the story but is quite satisfying for the length of the book and the way the relationship is drawn.
It's not slow moving, even though it's not an excitement filled story. I truly enjoyed it though. K.C. gives us good characterization and evokes the spirit of Christmas giving without smacking you in the face with sticky-sweet candy cane cliches. This is a; snuggle into your reading space as holiday lights glow, get into a romantic holiday mood, warm and fuzzy blanket of a story.
This is a sweet, slow burn May-December love story for the holidays.
Jason has been living a lonely life the past few years. Devoting himself to his business, he has never taken the time to put himself out there and explore life as a gay man having come out later in life. David has been a regular at Jason’s coffee shop, dashing in and out each morning, and never before noticing the handsome “silver fox” who hands out coffee and food to the homeless men who come into the shop. Jason opens David’s eyes to what’s right in front of him and David soon returns that favor.
The friendship develops quickly but the slow progression of their love affair was incredibly sweet and sexy. From first kisses to first touches, the tension and intensity builds at a slow pace fitting Jason’s inexperience. I loved the romance of it all. Christmas in NYC isn’t just for kids. When David decides to take Jason Christmas shopping KC Wells captured the highlights of the holiday in the City wonderfully.
If you’re in the mood for a sweet love story with a holiday touch, this one is sure to give you some warm fuzzies.
Saving Jason was a zero angst story that basically takes place between Thanksgiving and Christmas. David's job gives him a reason to really strike up a relationship with a lonely, hardworking owner of a coffeehouse. This story takes place in NYC and Wells made mention of the homelessness and how easy it is to help. We also see the beauty of the city. Both men were likable and the story moves at a pleasant clip. I would have loved more time with Travis but what are you gonna do? I'm happy to say this is what I want from a holiday story.
I really enjoyed this story!! I think every gay couple in fantasyland should get to know each other like David and Jason did. I liked the message behind the story as well; I don't think we think about the homeless often enough. I liked the slow build and then once things started to warm up, it got hot quickly.
At one point I was thinking maybe we could do without the sex but I'm glad we got it. I really enjoyed Jason's evolution and I need David to plan a romantic day for me!!!
I really enjoyed everything about this. Well, except for my missing chapter apparently. My copy only has 11 Chapters and there was supposed to be 12. I'll go and try to find the missing chapter soon.
I loved that the age difference didn't matter and I didn't get a feel of about how much different it was. I think it was around 20? years, but I'm not for certain. Just a guess.
I loved how their friendship formed and then their relationship. They had a bond and neither one of them were willing to let it go.
Christmas and the holiday spirit are the focus of this story from the very start, and in more than one way. David is a PR guy and may not be entirely enthusiastic about his boss’s idea of using a soup kitchen to spruce up their law firm’s image over the holidays, but once he starts to work on the project, he runs into Jason and his perspective changes. Yes, the soup kitchen and the work they both do there is still significant, but their new relationship soon takes center stage.
David has a job, an apartment, and a loving (if somewhat overwhelming) family. When he begins to look for a soup kitchen willing to partner with his employer to get some publicity, David suddenly sees the homeless in a very different light. He also gets a lot closer to Jason, the owner of the coffee shop where David grabs breakfast-on-the-run every weekday morning. As the project develops and they begin to know each other better, David only becomes more curious about Jason every time they meet.
Jason is not a happy man. He has a well-run business and dedicates a lot of his time to helping those less fortunate than him, but he has a sad past and not much of a social life. Jason is determined to be a good guy, but he can’t even admit his need for intimacy until he has found the courage to come out to David. There is a lot to discover about him, and I enjoyed his and David’s slow burn romance.
If you’re looking for a mostly drama-free, sweet, warm holiday read about two lonely men who decide life is more fun when they are together, then you might like this novella.
NOTE: This book was provided by the author for the purpose of a review on Rainbow Book Reviews.
Well now I’m feeling all warm and fuzzy inside and my heart feels all squishy. *happy contented sigh* Oh, how much I loved Jason and David together. Their story was generally low angst, more of a “finding his way” type of story, and was a nice, slow burn between the two main characters that made them coming together oh so sweet.
Even though there’s an age gap between David and Jason, I honestly didn’t even think about it during the story. With these characters, it really didn’t have any impact for me as the two of them just felt comfortable and right together…probably as a result of the slow and easy development of their relationship. It was nice seeing the younger man leading the older one for a change, and David was so caring and understanding with Jason which is one of the things that warmed my heart. The gradual evolution of their feelings made the physical moments that much more tender, sensual and eventually explosive.
Both Jason and David are kind-hearted, giving men and watching as they went from acquaintances to friends to lovers was deeply satisfying. There were so many moments during this story that I found myself with a smile on my face, and when I finally read “the end” I was left wanting more—not because there were things left open-ended, but because I truly love the two of them together.
Saving Jason was a 5-star holiday romance for me, and is definitely going to be on my annual re-read list. I highly recommend this wonderful story to any M/M romance fan, though this is for readers 18+ for adult language and M/M sexual content. And yes-when the two of them finally get to that point, it is incredibly hot and passionate ;-)
Okay, so first I fell in love with the guys on the cover, then I fell in love with the guys inside on the pages.
K C Wells has produced a perfect tonic for the festive period, light with just a hint of a tang to take the edge off, bubbling over with boundless emotion and some serious slow burn.
All this leads up to a silver fox falling in love for the first time after struggling with his identity as a gay man following a bitter divorce and a distancing from his son because of circumstance.
There's a younger man, and while how much younger isn't made obvious, it didn't feel like loads of decades in age between them. David had been working for some time following his college experiences and he just read as a more mature character than someone in their early 20s, I read him as probably being around 28 to 30 in comparison to Jason's 45.
Jason was so sweet, genuinely kind hearted and a little bit repressed and fearful but it just made it all the more sweeter when their growing passion finally ignited into a beautifully evocative fireside rug first time.
Very sweet slow love story that is perfect for the holidays or any day. K.C. Wells never disappoints me but I was especially tickled with this book. Not only a great story line but also encompasses homelessness, homeless vets and adoptable/shelter pets. Loved it! A definite one to read again and again.
What a wonderful, sweet holiday read! I loved the development of Jason and David's relationship. I really felt a kinship with Jason who is the older, but more inexperienced man. David was so sweet and romantic and patient. I really enjoyed this book a lot. Plus that cover! I cannot resist a sexy silver fox and especially one that gazes lovingly into his man's eyes. *sigh*
I’ve spent the last few days searching old unread books on my kindle. Most I start to read and throw away. I love K. C. Wells so I was shocked that I hadn’t read this. It was such a warm and sweet story. The Sunday Jason and David spent in New York was one of the most romantic things I’ve read in a long time. I haven’t been to New York in years but I could remember everywhere they went. It made me want to visit next Christmas.
This was pretty cute but the ending felt kinda’ abrupt. I wasn’t paying attention to the percentage so when I read “ the end” I was kinda shocked 😂 It definitely ends with a HFN but if you know me at all I need a HEA to feel satisfied and most of the time I’m still left wanting more!
I have a weakness for anything K.C. Wells and for May-December romances. Saving Jason is a great combination resulting to a fluffy, romantic read that sends tingles down the spine and made this reader smile silly. I mean, who can resist a silver fox? If you're saying you can, shush...me love me silver foxes.
Now, what is this story all about? Think Holidays and how it can be screwed up to the advantage of a business and how things can go right for everyone involved. David Merrow has a job to do and he needs the input of someone closely involved. He's been directed to locate a homeless shelter and use it to the advantage of the firm he works for as well as the homeless and the shelter. Now that he is more aware of his surroundings, David's eyes are finally opened and he sees the needy all around him...and Jason, the barista guy.
Jason Garton owns a coffee shop that David frequents daily. His history made him hyper aware of the homeless on the streets and so made it customary to provide some with breakfast when they come knocking in his cafe. When his frequent customer, David, opens up and talks to him about his deeds, he sees a friendship developing. Never in his wildest dreams had he imagined that this would be the holiday season to remember. As David and Jason's platonic relationship develops, there is no escaping it developing to a more romantic one and Jason is a little shaken and a lot stirred.
For those who are fans of the author, then you are very much aware that when she decides to write something cheesy, you are sure it will stick to your palate and leave you wanting for more. That's just how she does it. The romance oozes from every page here and is a perfect holiday read where everyone wanting one needs the oozing romance. We all need oozing romances this holiday season - just saying!
I love the sweetness of a Christmas story that is full of the love that the season brings out. There is a lot of comfort in these books, and none more so that in Saving Jason. David is the younger man in this story who falls for an older man (not so terrible old, though). David unwittingly finds himself taking the lead in the development of a relationship between the couple and in doing so not only provides the love and comfort Jason needs but also the closeness to another man that David himself needs, even though he doesn’t initially realize it. Jason thinks he’s doing just fine in his quiet, lonely life, but as is usually the case, he doesn’t realize what is missing from his life until he has a sample of what it could be like if he had a true partner. There is not much angst in this book, which is exactly what is needed in a Christmas love story. This is the exactly right book to curl up with (in the Northern Hemisphere) on a cold day by the fire, or (in the Southern Hemisphere) as a great beach read. I loved this book and know you will too.
