I had a wonderful time with Valen, the second book in the Guardians of Hades series, and it left me wanting to read the remaining books. I enjoyed it so much more than I the first book.
What the book is about? As you may have guessed by now based on the title, this installment tells the story of Valen, the Guardian for the gate of the Underworld in Rome. A job which involved him protecting the underworld from daemons and preventing a collision between the mortal realm and his world. He had the power to weild lightening, however, the barriers he built around his heart, led to it having a dark hold over him. With every barrier he erects the hold becomes more powerful.
However, when he crossed paths with the beautiful assassin who had been watching him from the shadows waiting on the right moment to strike, the barriers he erected began crumbling one by one.
Eva was hired by a mysterious client to gather intel on Valen. She had no idea that her mark was a god and the guardian of the Underworld. She knew nothing of the world this latest assignment brought to her door. She knew, however, it was not an easy one, an she was way in over her head.
Characters A tortured hero, Valen bore a deep seated pain and anger. He held the belief no one could love him. A belief which contributed to his aloof behaviour. Upon learning of the events that led to him maintaining this belief my heart broke for him.
Eva did not have an easy life growing up, and the choices she made as a result led to her becoming an assassin. She was smart, brave, feisty, resilient, independent and caring and the perfect match for Valen. She was unlike any woman he had ever encountered.
The secondary characters from Valen’s brothers to the various daemons looking to create havoc intrigued me and made me curious to learn more.
Romance I enjoyed the interactions between the characters, especially those between Valen and Eva. The chemistry between them popped, cracked, sizzled and burned. Their romance was not of the slow burn variety, but more of a raging inferno. The sex scenes, though hot, were tastefully written. The main thing that endeared me to their relationship was the trust they had in their love for each other. I loved how protective they were of each other.
Story Heaton weaved an intense suspenseful, fun and at times heartbreaking story There were scenes that had me smiling and some of which made me sad. There were no cliff-hangers, however the overall story arc continues.
World building It was fun revisiting the world Heaton created. Things have intensified since the last book. The villains have amped up their game and will use any means necessary to carry out their evil plot.
Conclusion/Recommendation The Guardian of Hades is proving to be an engaging series. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series. This is a must read for fans of paranormal romance. This review was originally posted on Totally Addicted to Reading
Valen is book two in the Guardians of Hades series by Felicity Heaton.
Well hawt dame Valen was a delicious treat in the Guardians of Hades series. I had a phenomenal time returning to this world and its deliciously sexy guardians of the Underworld. Boy oh boy does Valen have some issues, well all the brothers do, but with him it's deeper. He believes no one can love him and that he is cursed. The power of words spoken can affect anyone.
Valen has an assassin that has been tailing him for months now and his little assassin has creeped under his skin and into his soul just like the lighting he craves. Even though he doesn’t know her he is still affected by her and so the game is on.
We learn how Valen got his scare, why he thinks he is cursed, and we also learn what happened in the past to affect him so deeply and well all the brothers, but him it seams to have shaped and affected the most. As for the romance. The little assassin and Valen are similar, yet they complement each other. Both keep their hearts locked up, but glimpses of their true selves come out when they are around each other. The attraction and understand is vivid and plays out wonderfully on the pages.
The scene that made me smile and laugh was when he shows off his powers to his little assassin. Really, OMG, that bunny scene was just too funny. Something you really should read.
The author doesn’t pull any punches in showcasing her writing and storytelling. We get more revealed on the family, some great surprises and twists, and the sexy times are steamy and powerful. I’m waiting on pins and needles for the next installment.

Valen is the second book in Felicity Heaton's Guardians of Hades series and I have to admit I wasn't sure what I'd make of Valen because he wasn't exactly the nicest of the brothers in the previous book. I know Felicity is brilliant at changing my minds about her characters though and she proved that again here, I think I actually ended up loving Valen even more than Ares!
Valen's ability revolves around controlling lightening which makes him a powerful enemy to have and someone you definitely want at your back in a battle. He also has a curse that we weren't aware of before though, one laid on him by Zeus before the brothers were exiled to earth to protect the gates to the Underworld. I don't want to talk much about what he did to earn the curse or what the curse actually entails but once you know the details and start to see the way it effects him it makes it much easier to understand why he's so standoffish compared to the others. I didn't really notice in the first book that the brothers all treat him differently to the way they treat each other but it kind of broke my heart seeing how on the outside he always was around them.
Eva is an assassin who was initially hired to track Valen's movements and report back to her employer but the requests he makes of her have started to become more and more strange and she's now really worried for her own safety if she doesn't follow through on what she's promised. She had no clue about the supernatural creatures around her and now she's caught up in the middle of a battle that has been going on for centuries. As a normal human she doesn't stand a chance against gods and daemons but she has a few skills up her sleeve and most importantly she has the will to survive so she'll do whatever it takes to make sure she comes out on top, even if it means allying herself with the man she was initially sent to kill.
I thought Valen and Eva were great together and what I loved most was the way Eva was willing to stand up to Valen's brothers on his behalf. She saw things about Valen that none of the others have ever noticed and she really gave them a few much needed home truths about the way they treated him. They had brilliant chemistry but they also made great partners in battle and even though Eva isn't as physically powerful as Valen she fights by his side and always has his back. We get to see plenty of the other brothers too and as much as I loved Valen I'm practically dying of curiosity about Esher now. I'm so excited that his book is next and I can't wait to read it!

This heroine was fairly annoying. That may have been due to the fact that the author was very proud of her knowledge of how to say asshole in Italian, since it seemed to be the majority of her internal dialogue.
Unlike any other hero I can recall, Valen has a ton of rage. Hot, blinding rage and fury that he doesn't necessarily try to avoid or dent.
But something changed that first time he met Eva (and what a smoking-HOT time it was).
But then Eva left...
The story Felicity told is absolutely amazing. Her writing is so thorough, and I can easily imagine and feel everything that she intends the reader to see and feel. I was truly a part of this story and felt like I was a fly on the wall, actually experiencing everything.
I enjoyed reading Valen and how he evolved as the story progressed. And, I'll be honest, I'm a sucker for a dark, brooding alpha :)
And Eva was perfect, in my opinion. Strong, yes, independent, yes, but I'm so happy that she had her moments where she relied on someone else instead of being all gung-ho anti-male "don't you DARE try to help me" like so many of these romance heroines are anymore.
Felicity's word choice and attention to detail is phenomenal, whether it's an action scene, a love scene, or describing gaudy living room furniture.
I am positively enthralled with this series, and I can't wait for the next book!!!
(I received a copy of this book in consideration of an honest review)
Wow. Valen was kinda, err, rough around the edges when we first meet him. In an inflammatory douchecanoe sort of way. He and Ares clashed repeatedly in book 1 and he came across as the isolated brother. Well, actually, that was Esher. But Valen had his own issues and they weren't of the gentle variety.
To say I didn't expect to like him as much as I did would be a bit of an understatement. Seeing what had driven him to that reactionary state where he lashes out at those around him was eye opening. Sad, too. Valen's issues run deep and they stem from something that affects every one of his brothers.
Then we have Eva. An assassin who seems a little world weary and is put in Valen's path for reasons that aren't made clear to her. An assassin who's suddenly been made aware that the world beyond her is much bigger and more dangerous than she could have ever imagined. Because, you know, who ever thinks demons could be standing beside you? Or gods? Or...well, anything of that ilk.
We get a few more answers as to what drives our band of brothers and a whole slew of new questions. Things are slowly revealing themselves, but the entire picture hasn't been laid out yet. I'm ready for the next brother!
Valen is the second book in the Guardians of Hades series by Felicity Heaton. It can be read as a stand alone novel, but I am sure you will get far more enjoyment from reading the whole series in order because all of the brothers involved will be mentioned and have a part in every book. For instance, after reading book one, 'Ares', I adored him and it was wonderful catching up with him in this second book.
As the beginning of the book synopsis states: “Prince of the Underworld and Lord of Lightning, Valen was banished from his home by his father, Hades, two centuries ago and given a new duty and purpose—to keep our world and his from colliding in a calamity foreseen by the Moirai.
Together with his six brothers, he fights to defend the gates to the Underworld from daemons bent on breaching them and gaining entrance to that forbidden land, striving to protect his home from their dark influence.
Valen is a very angry God, he blames himself for the death of a loved one a long time ago, and he believes that although they say otherwise, his brothers blame him too. They all think the worst of him, so he acts up, after all they think he only acts true to form. He has a little pleasant distraction in his life when he realises that he is being followed, and has been for a while. An assassin sent to kill him, a mortal woman who doesn't even realise that he knows exactly where she is and what she is going to try to do. He wants to meet her, he wants things to come to a head, he knows she has no chance of killing him and its about time she realises it.
Eva is a well known Assassin in Italy, and when she takes the contract to kill Valen she has no idea just who she is taking on. She knows nothing of the Underworld, and that daemons, Gods, and hell spawn are all living amongst the mere mortals of the planet. When the opportunity arises to shoot Valen with the darts her employer supplied her with, she'd never killed with poison darts before, she set off what could either be her worst nightmare, or the fulfilment of her dreams.
After reading 'Ares' I thought it was going to be impossible for the next book to be of the same high standard. I am pleased to say I was absolutely wrong. 'Ares' had the power of fire, but Valen has the power of electricity. The scenes that the author wrote telling of his fury and how it made the worst thunder and lightning storms were amazing. I adore thunder storms, and I could picture vividly the scenes that Ms Heaton painted with her words. All the battles between the brothers and the daemons were fantastic, especially when they had to deal with everything from your every day daemons, to ones such as succubus and wraiths! So much drama, and yet also a story of perhaps love conquering all? Valen's emotional story grabbed my heart, and I hoped that Eva would help him calm down, and realise that he was very much worth loving. If nothing else they had some steaming hot passionate sex that will have you reaching for a fan! This book was equal to, or perhaps even better than the first book in the series, and I cannot wait for the next book because I have a feeling that this series is just going to get better and better!
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Readers' Copy of this book.

REVIEW: VALEN is the second installment in Felicity Heaton’s contemporary, adult GUARDIANS OF HADES paranormal / fantasy romance series very loosely based in Greek mythology, focusing on seven brothers- the sons of Hades and Persephone -sent to Earth to guard the gates to the Underworld. This is Prince of the Underworld and Lord of Lightning Valen, and assassin for hire Eva’s story line. VALEN can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty but I recommend reading the series in order as the brothers struggle against an unknown enemy to keep the human world and the Underworld from colliding.
NOTE: The Guardians of Hades series is Felicity Heaton’s interpretation of, and does not follow, the actual Greek mythological family tree or events.
Told from several third person perspectives including Valen and Eva VALEN follows assassin for hire Eva as she is tasked with taking down a man she knows nothing about. For months our heroine has tracked Valen without success until a run in with her target, and a broken vial of what she believes is poison, finds our heroine in bed with the man who will change her life. Enter Valen, the Lord of Lightning, and a man who believes he is incapable of love. What ensues is the search for the truth, and the building relationship between a mortal and a god.
The relationship between Valen and Eva is one of forbidden love. Eva was hired by a powerful man to bring Valen to his knees; Eva is a woman who for most of her life has remained hidden in the shadows, trained to kill but a woman who will fall in love with a man not of this world. The $ex scenes are intimate and intense without the use of over the top sexually graphic language and text.
All of Valen’s brothers including Ares and his mate Megan (ARES #1), Daimon eldest brother Keras, Marek, Clalistos, Esher, their mother Persephone, and uncle Zeus play secondary and supporting roles. The requisite evil comes with many faces including Benares and his sister Jin-the pair who hired Eva.
Like many of Felicity Heaton’s story lines the tale is told through written narrative, introspection, reflection and internal dialogue but it is the narration that carries most of the story. The premise is entertaining; the characters are broken, colorful and energetic; the romance is passionate and breathtaking. VALEN is an imaginative take on Greek mythology; a spirited look at forbidden love.
God, this book frustrated the living shit out of me. Pages and pages of rambling! There would be 3 pages of in-depth descriptions of how much the H wanted to kiss the h and nothing happens. I also HATE HATE HATE when theres a misunderstanding and its never brought up again or when the characters say they're going to talk about it AND IT NEVER HAPPENS. I feel jipped. I was very disappointed, especially after how much i loved the first one. The characters couldn't decide what emotion they wanted to portray and the heroine was a complete moron.
Unsurprisingly, Valen is exactly like the element he controls - sparky, hot, and can fry you if he wants to. Eva has been following him for months and, although he doesn't like mortals, Valen finds himself missing her when she's not there. The story gets more complicated as it goes on and you just don't know who is causing trouble!
I was truly surprised by "Valen" I wasn't sure how his story was going to go, because I honestly didn't think to kindly of his character in book 1 "Ares" I soon found myself falling in love with the coldhearted brother Valen, as his story came to life, and his daring and sexy assassin Eva, hired by the daemons. His hate for Zeus, his need to keep to keep his heart guarded, his eccentric brother's, fighting the daemons, protecting the gate, it seems like Valen has been pushed to his limits, but it's been by his own hands. Pushing his own limitations with the gifts he was blessed with when he was a baby. Keeping everyone at a arms length. Hating himself and Zeus for the past that he cannot fix. Eva is that key and the daemons plan too play her against Valen for that very reason!
what a great next chapter to Guardians of Hades. Valen is so complex and conflicted with emotions he keeps hidden. The gods are much kinder in these books then other series I've read with them in them. It's nice reading a book where everyone isn't angry all the time. The chemistry between Valen and Eva. Eva battles her own demons and together the are unstoppable. I couldn't stop laughing about the bunnies and the lightning. Awesome.
**Disclaimer: I recommend reading Ares, book one, first as it lays the foundation for the series and world building.**
Valen is one of seven sons born to Hades and Persephone, and a Key to the Underworld, as are his brothers. They were banished to earth over two hundred years ago by their father, an action Valen is still disgusted with, and tasked with protecting both it and their world from a prophecy foretold by the Moirai. Valen knows he has enemies because of who he is and what he does, so learning he's being followed isn't a shock, but discovering his shadow is a woman...
Eva may be a mortal, but she has more than earned her reputation as a deadly opponent...she is an assassin after all, and excellent at her job. However, her latest mission has gotten her involved in something even more dangerous than her, something that could resist in her death. Eva is familiar with bringing that on others, but when it's herself, it's completely different.
Valen, as the Lord of Lightning, is used to the power of electricity flowing through his veins, but to have it happen in response to someone, a woman at that, is a surprise. Though he and his brothers are ever vigilant, knowing the battle foreseen by the fates is starting, he won't deny his stalker intrigues him, even if he can't understand, or admit, why he hasn't killed her yet. He was even curious why she'd disappeared for three months, and it isn't simply because he wants to know who hired her. He wanted to, needed to, know how she could've left him.
"He knew the moment she was near him, because she lit up his veins as fiercely as his lightning and made his body buzz just as addictively. Gods, he had missed her." - Valen
Eva can't believe that her target not only knew she was there, but also was able to capture her. However, the desire she feels up in seeing him, feeling his touch, surprises her more than anything else. Her emotions aren't supposed to be involved while working, yet she can't suppress them with him. But when he insults her skills, demands she tell her client to send someone more competent, the overriding emotion becomes anger, and the challenge has been accepted. Just like Valen intended...
"She is a storm born of the earth , bearing the name of an angel but the skill of a devil." - Persephone to Valen, regarding Eva
Eva's instincts keep telling her something isn't right about this mission and is unsure why the parameters of her client's requests are continually adjusted. Not to mention why she feels as if she's being watched, as if her client doesn't trust her. But then again, she doesn't trust him either, and knows he isn't someone you disappoint or cross.
What happens when the chemistry, the connection, between Valen and Eva is too strong to deny? How will Eva's client react upon learning she no longer views Valen as a target? Will her client, and/or his sister, try to come between Valen and Eva in any way they can? Can Valen and Eva protect each other and defeat those now after both of them? Will Valen and Eva admit the depth of their feelings? Will their pasts destroy any future they could have? Or will they get their HEA?
One-click now and follow along as the prey and the target become so much more to each other than either could've ever imagined. I'm looking forward to Esher's book soon. He intrigues me.
*possible spoiler follows...continue at your own risk* On a purely personal note, though I understand the significance it played and therefore why it was used, I really would've preferred not reading about the "contact" one of the evil people, client's sister, had with Valen against his will. I don't want to read that. Yes, I know he didn't want it and stopped the kiss forced on him as soon as he could, however, I do not like any kind of touching like this between a hero and someone else. I'm invested in the main characters as a couple and regardless of it being against his wishes, I still preferred it wouldn't have happened.
**I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.**
I received this ARC for an honest review. I LOVED IT!!!! I honestly did not think i would love this series as much as i do The Eternal Mates series but i cannot wait to read the next book!! I love books that have hidden meanings and this one had a great one about just how powerful words are. I highly recommend this series as well as all books written by this amazing author!
Valen, Guardians of Hades #2 by Felicity Heaton is a paranormal romance that can be read as a stand alone. Set in Rome, Eva is a female assassin hired to gather intelligence for a client about Valen. Unknown to Eva, Valen is more than he seems. Prince of the Underworld, banished by Hades, and tasked with protecting the gates to the Underworld (along with his brothers) by wielding his gift of lightening. As a mortal, this opens up an unbelievable world of gods, daemons, wraiths, and other Hellspawn to Eva. There is a ton of story packed into this book. Not so much that you get lost, but enough to keep you guessing on where this adventure is leading and what may be in store for future books in this series. Honest moment. I had mixed feelings about Valen being the next book because his character is so complex. I thought that he would need more time throughout the series to develop the intricacies of his motives and actions. Not so. The author does an amazing job of weaving in backstory throughout the book. She does this with Valen in Ares (book #1) and again with Esher in Valen's book. The interaction between the main characters is fantastic. I wish there could have been a little more detail as to how Eva became an assassin besides her family history but it really doesn't detract from the story and could have been left out altogether. If you're looking for a paranormal romance with action, adventure, and heat, this is a good one. A great story line without over the top Greek god-drama. I also recommend the Eternal Mates Series by this author.
I LOVED VALEN! Oh my goodness! He is the perfect mix of danger and protective. After being shunned his whole life Valen only expects the worst out of people. That is until he meets Eva. She's also been through a lot of rough patches in her life that have caused her to become guarded. Their passion from the very beginning is explosive! With such undeniable heat between them they cannot help but give into temptation. There are quite a few amazingly hot moments between these begrudging lovebirds. Felicity Heaton will have you drooling at the hotness that is called Valen!
This is the second book of the guardian of Hades series. I have to admit I didn't like Valen very much in the first book of the series - Ares. But this book really explains why Valen appears so cocky and careless and why he gives the appearance of not caring what anyone thinks. He was such a great character once you got to know him. this was a great love story, and the world the author has created is developing more and more. great paranormal read!! I can't wait for the next book on Esher!!
My reaction when I saw that Valen was the next book in this series...
However, I really liked the start of this series and I read a few reviews stating that they had the same reservations about Valen that I did but that the author changed their minds real quick.
They weren't wrong.
In Ares' book, I thought Valen was a total d-bag. But as soon as I started Valen's book, I could see why he was such a d-bag and what can I say, I'm a sucker for tortured souls. And surprisingly, I wanted to knife all the OTHER brothers in this book until Eva set them straight.
I am in awe of how effortlessly the author develops her characters. About 85% of the way through the book, I started comparing the characters now (my version of now at the time) to the very beginning of the book. They were startlingly different. Props to the author- the character development was subtle without abrupt changes. I didn’t feel like the author just changed the characters haphazardly or that the development was inconsistent. It was effortless.
And Valen?
"He shrugged, stepped into the combat trousers and tugged them up. His eyes locked with hers as he buttoned them. His wicked smile set her heart on fire." "He was possessive in a way that screamed he would do everything in his power, whatever it took, to keep her eyes on him and her heart belonging to him. Hurting her wouldn’t even cross his mind, because to his sort of possessive nature it would be a crime, something he couldn’t stomach doing. His sort of possessive nature showed itself in a desire to protect, and a deep need to cherish."
Valen and his brothers can only be described as hotter then Hades and drool worthy in this Guardians of Hades series . This second book follows in the steps of the first one with a fast pace dramatic sexy read. The author continues her dynamic style of vivid descriptions of the world around their world and the sensual tension between Valen and Eva.
I have always loved the way that Author Felicity Heaton grabs the reader with her vivid imagination. She creates tortured souls that find each other and the love they deserve. What she does extremely well is showing weaknesses that create strengths quickly followed with resolutions that all parties are satisfied with. This book emphasizes this with Eva and Valen's brokenness and how they resolve the assassination situation.
As always there is an ending to this story that keeps the reader wanting to come back and I really, really want to know more about Esher.
This is an exciting 5 STAR read.......
Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review.
As much of an asshole as Valyn was, his back-story really helped bring more of the picture together started in book 1. I couldn't help but feel sorry for him and root for him to get that happily ever after, too. Something about his woundedness called to me. Certain events made me hate Zeus even more (let's be honest though, when do we ever like that man hoe?), despite the big reveal with him and our group of brothers and their missing sister.
Now I enjoyed the story, but I hated Ava. Since she was part of so much of it, it took a while to really get into half of what was going on. Nothing about her character or her personality was enticing to me. She talked a lot about being an assassin, but her skills were sorely lacking — she spent more time talking in her head than doing anything worthy of being repeated (and it was on a loop over and over again). It seemed like her favorite word was "stronzo" aka asshole, and she made sure to really press that word anytime she could. Her appeal was supposed to be how she's sexy but really, it was meh to me. I was engaged for Valyns sake only. He was so desperate for love and affection that it was endearing. The "I can save him" trope is strong with that one.
Back to Ava, I found it very difficult to understand what her character had to do with anything. Unlike Megan, Ava truly has no ties to any supernatural phenomenon or person. She's a hitman who works for hire, and that's just it. So, unfortunately, on paper, she has very little to offer the group. Moreover, it logically made no sense for the demons to even enlist her help. They're highly organized they've got more influence and power in the mortal realm than Hades and his sons were aware of. So again, it just doesn't make much sense aside from plot-armor.
The series plot, however, got a nice kick with the whole wraith situation and the organization of demons trying to overtake the gates — but I couldn't help but get sidetracked with subplot loopholes. For 1, these women are mortal and will eventually die... that's important since so far Ares and Valyn almost lose to their otherworldly senses whenever these women are involved. How is that going to be dealt with? Idk. But, I assume there's a bond of some kind that will lengthen their lifespans (hopefully) and will be explained further in the future. Another had to deal with markings placed on *some of the brothers. I say some because it was mentioned that some had one but they all could we'll have to see. Anyway, only a few have the favor of other gods/goddesses? It'll be interesting to see why... Either way, there were several subplots to get lost on — including why none of the brothers would talk about their sister in front of Calistos.
All in all the Guardians of Hades are extremely intriguing, and I have high hopes for our volatile Esher ♡
Book two sees us with Valen in Rome where he lives and guards his gate. His hands are lethal weapons, he can command lightning like his uncle Zeus. But he hates it here on Earth, he wants to go home and live in peace in his own little part of the underworld. But until then he begrudgingly protects those who live there.
Eva (or Angel as she’s also known as) is an assassin for hire, good at her job, but her latest target has her puzzled, why would the job change from information only to capture? It doesn’t make any sense!
He’s being hunted, and for a while now, the cat and mouse he is playing with his little assassin is his only joy, well that and killing daemons that try to use the gate. And the electricity that runs through his body. Luring her into a trap was easy enough, sending her back to her boss was a piece of cake, but what he didn’t bank on was the feelings she drew from him. He knew she would be trouble (his mother had spoken to him a cryptic message) but he didn’t realise how much!
Eva isn’t happy at finding out she’s been played by her boss. So she plans to talk to her mark, that takes her down a path that totally confuses her!!
The pair then plan to work together, trying to keep it professional on both sides proves hard, in fact downright difficult, the attraction between the two is off the scale.....
Must admit, meeting Valen in the first book “Ares”, you just want to smack Valen, his attitude towards his brothers is antagonistic, his hatred towards his father is palpable, but the loathing for his Uncle Zeus borders on the verge of War!! But you also get a sense of loneliness from him. You the camaraderie between his brothers, why is he being left out? Why does his mother spend more time with him than his brothers? The sparks between Valen and Eva is electric, almost from the beginning you see Valen fight his attraction to Eva, his feelings of being unworthy of love. The history behind the scar he wears on his face, changes how you view him. You can’t help but want to offer him comfort. And Eva, she’s awesome, a fighter, a heroine with a brain and a kicka$$ attitude. She’s definitely a match for Valen. She freaks out initially when she sees all the things going on in the book,(but who wouldn’t?) but it not long till Eva is back and fighting alongside Valen.
The plot thickens, a battle in Ares book ends with the daemon that was trying to kill Megan dying himself. But not before telling the brothers that trouble is coming, and a silhouette of a man with purple eyes watching them .....
I like the series immensely, and I can’t wait for the next book.
One is sure, I still want to read the rest of the books. Still the same writing style, the surroundings are described in complete detail, making some of the scenes drag for pages. I did sometimes think its unnecessary, just wanted to get to the point quicker. It’s only the book 2 but so far the heroines are meant to be very strong and they are, but in the same time their past is more unclear thank the Gods. And its less revealed. Eva - for an assassin with 10 year career, there was no chance to read about it or see actually that she is a good assassin as she proclaimed. There is no proof of her skill as she fails every time, doesn’t matter that she is not fighting again mortals, she still doesn’t show how physically strong she is or how she can fight. I found it disturbing, as only place where she did something was at the end and more or less it was really simple and nothing that other female lead couldn’t do. I liked her curiosity, liked that she thoughts she is going a little mad, as really, to take all that new information in and witness unnatural things takes a lot of time and getting used to it. I liked how she cared about Valen and wanted him to see that everyone around him cared about him, and he is the one who flatly refuses to believe in that. Valen is an interesting character. Cold to outside world, only because of his fears and believe that no-one can love him. He really believes that and I like how real it felt. The doubt about everything and how hard it is to get over it and not think the way you do all the time. To be honest I liked the fact that he is not over it when the book ends. I wanted Evas though about Valen to be shown more, because her side was lacking. She wanted to pit his character together peace by peace and bit by bit but it doesn’t really show why she fell in love or how it happened. At the beginning of the book I thought Valen had a little bit of a serial killer vibe or maybe maniacal and wicked vibe. And I liked it. He is short tempered, rash but he understands what he have done after he have done it. The plot reveals more details about the bad guy behind all the activity at the gates. Esher is next. Can’t wait. Im not sure I like the fact that he is going to save a mortal female in the train… after he just killed a man just looking at him and 2 demons. It really doesn’t go with his character as much as he have shown his disgust and hatred towards all mortals even Megan and Eva.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
It is the spring of second books in a series for me. I’ve read five since March. I often dislike second books as they lack the excitement and newness of the first in a series and often serve more as a bridge to future installments, especially in trilogies. Valen was a definite exception to the rule. I actually preferred Valen to Ares, the first book in the Guardians of Hades series. The premise of the series goes like this: as a preemptive strike against a foretold threat, Hades banishes his strapping sons, all gods in their own right, from the underworld so they may each guard an underworld gate, several of which are stationed across Earth. The gods, relatively young by ancient mythology standards, are stuck on Earth until the enigmatic, malicious threat has been dispatched. Lightening god Valen caught my attention in book one as the meanest, menacing brother of the bunch. He is the black sheep of the group, but a bit of a mamma’s boy, so I knew he’d have some redeeming qualities. Valen’s romantic interest, human assassin Eva, is also a bit of a loner with a chip on her shoulder. Together, the two uncover a dangerous plot set in place by a pair of supernatural siblings. And sexual attraction, present from the start between Valen and Eva, blossoms into something so much more. Valen is a great combination of action and romance. Like Ares, Valen isn’t too divergent from the paranormal romance formula, but it’s dependably solid paranormal romance. I enjoy the tie in to Greek Mythology; Zeus makes an appearance in Valen. To date, I haven’t read a Felicity Heaton book I didn’t like; all have been page turners. Book Three in this series is set to arrive sometime in 2017 and will tell Esher’s story. Esher is the brother/god struggling with some serious psychological issues and a violent hatred for mortals. I imagine his unravelling will be delightful. Can’t wait.
I received an advanced reader copy of 'Valen' and was super excited to delve back into a world where myth and reality collide with often terrifying consequences. 'Valen' is the second book in Felicity Heaton’s brand new series, Guardians of Hades, and having thoroughly enjoyed the first book, Ares, I was expecting great things.
I was not disappointed.
The plot itself is fast paced but it doesn’t feel rushed. 'Valen' establishes an equilibrium between dramatic, action-packed moments and the tender, heart-felt moments between Valen and Eva. As much as I enjoyed 'Ares', I felt a lot of scenes revolved around Ares and his brothers having meetings and discussing their next course of action and while this helped me to gain a better understanding of the characters, their motives and the events that occurred before those in the book, it sometimes made the plot feel a little slow and drawn out.
Since finishing this book, Valen has been added to my ever-growing harem of book boyfriends. I absolutely adore this man. We catch brief glimpses of him in 'Ares', but it’s only in his own book that we truly see the complexity of the character underlying his bravado. Valen is so unlike the majority of paranormal romance males. He’s insecure and thinks himself unworthy of love and I found my heart shattering into a million pieces whenever he misinterpreted Eva’s words or his brother’s actions, thinking they meant he was hated and unloved. He doesn’t exude arrogance and doesn’t suffer with a deep-rooted superiority complex like so many other paranormal romance males seem to. His relationship with Eva builds him up, instilling him with new-found confidence.
I don’t have a harem of book girlfriends but I do have a list entitled ‘Badass fictional women I aspire to become’ and Eva has most definitely been added to it. She’s strong-willed and this will burns bright, never diminishing even when faced with creeps like Benares and his sister, Jin. Sure, Eva is an assassin with a fearsome reputation, but her clients and those she has killed have all been human. Working for daemons and being pitched against gods would be more than enough to make anyone throw in the towel. Eva doesn’t, though. She fights and continues to do so even when it appears all hope is lost. She’s faced adversity and has been strengthened rather than destroyed.
'Valen' isn’t just a novel. It also acts as a prelude for the third book in the series, 'Esher'. There are two or three chapters from this deeply yet mysteriously troubled god’s perspective and I love how it builds a reader’s sense of anticipation. He looks upon humans with disdain and finds himself enslaved by the full moon…and we don’t know why! I think I’m gonna be spending a lot of time theorizing the mysteries of Esher. Also, Esher guards the Tokyo gate and I got crazily excited reading a scene where he’s in Shibuya and he sees his favorite Starbucks. I was sat in my chair mentally screaming “I’VE BEEN THERE! I’VE BEEN THERE!” (I used to live in Yokohama, the city next door to Tokyo). Also, is it really bad that while Esher is glaring down at the ‘hideous creations of the gods’, he only annoyed me when he appears to scorn Japanese, convenience-store umbrellas. It’s like, Esher, seriously? Have you ever used one of those things? They’re incredible. Firstly, they’re sold everywhere so you’ll never be caught out. Secondly, they’re super cheap (around 100 yen if my memory serves me correctly). Thirdly, they’re mahoosive so they cover you and your friend/backpack. And finally, the best point, they’re see through. They don’t hinder your viability at all. I sincerely hope Esher’s book isn’t going to be filled with Japanese umbrella-bashing.
My only real issue with 'Valen' is the jealousy. There’s a scene where Megan is healing a gravely injured Esher and Ares growls when she touches him. There’s another scene where Marek shows some admiration for Eva and Valen completely flips out. Boys, reign in that testosterone!
Really enjoyed this book and cannot wait for 'Esher'!
Valen is intense I'll give you that , that guy has a temper but you can hardly blame him once you know his story. The story was great, so was the plot and Eva & Valen are perfect together, they are a perfect match. Their backstories only validates how much those two are meant for one another. Btw, the bunny scene was hilarious haha I listened to it at least 3 times ^^
However, I still have the same problem as the first book (and I think it will be a problem throughout this series), the overwhelming descriptions and explanations right in the middle of conversations. Apart from the fact that the author feels the needs write long descriptions and explanations in between convos making it seem like it takes an eternity for characters to answer to one another, there is also the fact that those descriptions could have easily been shortened in order to fully appreciate the convo or the author could have at least waited until the end of the conversations to bombard us with info that (for the most part) aren't all that relevant or could have easily waited until the end of the convo.
Now I'm onto the next book . ESHER ... man I can't wait to read his story. Since he has a deep seated hatred for humans I'm curious to see how his story will evolve once he finds "his woman" .
Son of Hades Valen guards the gate of Rome and is in a never ending self hating pattern due to past events. He finds out he has an assassin out to subdue him rather than kill him and forms an attachment to her. Eva the assassin has taken a job which was meant to be simple but the people who hired her soon reveal that she is in over her head and she turns to Valen (Her mark) for help. As the two get closer a relationship based on trust and understanding forms.
The storyline in this is good and builds on the world already set by the first book Ares. It is becoming clear the daemons are building something much bigger than first thought and i assume the plot is going to thicken in the following books and this is leading to the event that is holding the gods to the mortal realm.
The characters are well built and stay constant throughout. You see vulnerabilities with both main characters so both of their stubborn streaks and strong personas do falter but for good reasons. This enables you to emotionally connect to both of them.
I look forward to the rest of the series and reading the stories of each of the brothers but also seeing how everything unfolds and how many twists and turn there could be.
Wow just wow. Felicity certainly knows how to right a hot as Hades book. I love her books. It's as if the characters are whisper their story in her ears. They are well written and phenomenal.
This book is the second book in her Guardians of Hades Romance Series. This book features Valen and Eva. But you will see his brothers and Ares mate Megan in this one too. Valen has a reason he’s they way he is. And I tell you it made me cry. I felt his anguish having lost what he did. I even went off the deep end myself when something similar happened to me. Good thing I am a mere mortal, as I could see me doing what he did too. So it made it easy for me to relate to him. Then there is Eva his little assassin. She is freaking amazing. Pure and simple and made just for Valen. She is a kick ass kind of girl when she took down a demon I was excited, well not as much as Valen but yeah I loved it. Then omg there are these two bad guys in this book like eww. They creped me out. They were kind of sick especially Jin. Man that woman was weird beyond words. I am so ready for book three. I hope it is Esher. I’d love to see him kick a certain villain’s ass. I am not saying who as not wanting to ruin the story for ya.
Now before I ruin this for you I will leave off here. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. If you do like this book, please consider leaving a review. The Authors really like it when you do; they value your opinions too.
NAH. JUST ANOTHER PR THAT DIDNT CAPTURE MY ATTENTION, THE CHEMISTRY DIDN'T LIGHT A FIRE AND I COULDN'T BE BOTHERED WITH THE PLOT.
VALEN isn't the brother I have a high interest for and he's more like the one with a rebel temper, after being cursed by Zeus his own uncle, he believes that no one is able to love him. Thus, he pushes them away. Valen while supposedly a tortured hero didn't captivate me or made me sympathize with his situation or character type. He knows he's being stalked by an assasin for months and when she suddenly disappears for 3 months, he misses her. Ugh what? That just screams that the story won't have much of an element of surprise anymore.
HEROINE is the total complement to Valen's biker hairstyle and rocks some awesome tattoos and a jaw length hair. She's a badass assassin or so I believed until she became a pawn for a pair of succubus-incubus sibling duo and ends up being their sex doll for Valen.
OVERALL there was zero excitement if you count out the hot sex.
I enjoyed Ares enough to continue the series but I found a few things lacking but this I absolutely LOVED. I’m intrigued and loving the characters and Felicity’s writing has noticeably improved and makes me want to read more of her work. I felt Ares could have used some editing and had some plot holes but I could see Valen on the NYT Best sellers list. I can only imagine how Felicity and her stories will keep getting better and better and I am so excited to follow her work and career along.
I definitely recommend this book and the premise of the series is incredible. The characters multifaceted and unique in every way. Their backstories are complex and well formulated. The world building and description of each city is palpable. I feel like I am there, which I think is a hard thing to do when they ‘step’ to different cities world wide.
Seriously do yourself a favour and read this series!
Valen is the second book in the Guardians of Hades series! I do recommend reading them in order. If you don't the well thought out character development will be lost on you as well as the continuously thickening plot.
I definitely think I love Valen! He is the perfect dark, mysterious, secretly loving man every girl loves in a book!
The book is set in Rome with a fabulous new character Eva. She is the missing piece that Valen has always needed to finish his puzzle. Eva brings a lot of sass, ass-kicking, verbal sparring and wittiness to the book.
This book leaves you at the edge of your seat wanting more! I can't help but ask myself what is happening with Esher, who wants to take down the gates, who is the mysterious girl who wants to keep Esher.
This is by far my favorite in the series so far! I can't wait for the next book!
