Dan and Frankie and the End of Everything

WARNING. APOCALYPSE IMMINENT. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.

It wasn't all over. Looking back now, that probably should have been obvious. But that's thing about denial--when wielded correctly, denial can be a powerful tool. It's what lets us keep on believing that that lump we found the other day is just a cyst, or that those stains on our husband's collar probably aren't lipstick. But I'm getting ahead of myself. First, let's introduce ourselves, shall we?

Hi, I'm Dan. You don't know me. I'm not famous or anything. Three months ago my best friend Frankie and I saved the world from being taken over by a rogue sect of alien, body-snatching jelly-slugs. There were ninjas and spy-stuff. We even met the president. It was kind of a whole thing.

After that, life pretty much returned to normal. I got myself another job, and nothing tried to force itself into my mouth and take over my brain.

We thought it was all over, that it was finished.

We really should have known better.

Slackers Dan and Frankie are at it again. I think I enjoyed this sequel more than the first book, maybe because I knew what to expect and I was not disappointed. The first sign that something is off is that someone keeps leaving burritos around for Dan. This subtle message leads to a clearing in the woods and the discovery of a mysterious round object. Things get worse from there, and eventually Dan and Frankie are dealing with all kinds of violent confrontations with crazy creatures. Dan soon discovers he may be “the Chosen One” who must stop a portal from opening and releasing havoc and death upon the entire world. But don’t worry. Frankie is right by his side with a battle axe. Mayhem and destruction ensue. A few bits went too far for me but the end of the world isn’t pretty. Langridge writes in a brilliantly clever way that is frequently laugh out loud funny. Highly recommended.
