Humanity has cut the cord and left the cradle, spreading across the galaxy in every direction. Adapting to millennia in space stations, perpetually nomadic fleets, and planets of every description has left the species as diverse as the countless worlds it now calls home. Humanity has travelled distances incomprehensible to its ancestors, and the memory of Earth has been reduced to little more than myth and legend.
The lessons hard-learned on Earth have been forgotten too, conflict over resources or ideology now fought on a grander scale. Fighter pilot-turned-freighter captain, Garik Mercer learned the hard way what warriors since the dawn of time have discovered; war is hell. He may have left it behind, but he’ll learn that violence can find him anywhere. A freight run on his ship, the Boldhammer, to a colony in the heart of an asteroid field should have been routine, but a fleeing fugitive proves the catalyst for a tragedy that will horrify a sector.
Outrage stalks the corridors and caverns honeycombing the asteroid hosting the Orfan’s Rock colony as governments, corporations and the media throughout the sector pick sides and assign blame, and throughout it all Garik conducts his business and tries to remain uninvolved.
But when a bounty hunter makes him an offer too good to refuse, getting involved may cost him everything if he can’t push himself, his crew and his ship beyond their limits.
