I read this book without being sick or injured. I have had surgeries in the past, and have been ill, but I don't remember anything quite like what the author experienced. It was inspiring to see how she surmounted the challenges - with laughter! - and bravely faced the hand she was dealt. This book was useful for me to read, though I don't need it now. It was the kind of information you store up for when you do need it; or you apply it to those around you who are suffering to better meet their needs. It's a book I will recommend to people undergoing healing in any form.

And don't think it's a dour, sad sort of book. There were places where I laughed so hard I cried. My only regret is that it's not translated in French so I can give it to a dear friend who is undergoing intense illness right now. She could use the encouragement - and the laughter.

An easy-to-read book packed with practical advice on how to cope during illness or recuperation from injury and surgery. Christine Carter writes warmly and addresses her readers as if they're sitting right across from her with a cup of coffee. Carter has also included pages where the reader can fill in themselves such as writing down a gratitude list, chore/ helper charts, a guide to finding your passions and pursuing them while bedridden/ temporarily incapacitated. Most of all, Carter is encouraging and hopeful, both qualities that are much needed when people are at their lowest.

This is the first time I've said this about any book but here goes; Every woman should have this book on her shelf. As women we take care of everyone in our family but when it comes time for us to receive care, it's hard for us to ask. Ms. Carter gives many reasons why we should learn to ask for help and exactly how to ask for the help we need.

This book is specifically designed for women who have suffered a traumatic physical injury, or are facing surgery or a serious illness. In any of these situations our routines are disrupted, our bodies render us 'useless'. We don't have to feel useless though and Ms. Carter provides several suggestions of how to 'be in the moment and heal'. This book includes worksheets for the reader to use during or before her scheduled convalescence.

This book is not only practical, tackling a subject not many discuss, but it is spiritually uplifting at a time we most need it. Everyone faces physical illness or traumatic injury at some point in their lives...why not have this beautiful book at the ready?

I'm 3 weeks post-Breast Cancer surgery, and there was a lot of great information in this book to help others on similar healing journeys. So many women may benefit from it, especially if you need scaffolding around you to help you guide the way on your path back to health.

I say that without having used this book as it's meant to be used, as a workbook and action plan. This book didn't apply to me.
1) I already have a strong daily gratitude practice
2) I meditate daily and have for nearly four years
3) Jesus Christ is not my personal savior

I strongly recommend this book to women going through a healing process after disease/surgery/injury, if you are not already using gratitude and meditation, and if the author's frequent use of scripture and her conversations and support received from her Christian faith don't turn you off. I did share it with a friend going through Cancer who is very involved in her church, I'm sure she'll love it.

I came across this book early in my recovery from traumatic injury and ankle surgery. Christine is WELL qualified to speak on this topic since she has had so many surgeries and injuries herself. She is super, gut level honest about what she has faced and learned.
This book has been a HUGE blessing. So full of encouragement and practical steps to get through this time of pause and healing. This has been a difficult time for me but this book has helped me give myself the grace and patience I need, and the respect that my ankle deserves as it heals. I HIGHLY recommend this book to any woman faced with an interruption in her life so she can heal.

This is a helpful read if you are in the midst of recovering from a serious injury or illness, surgery, etc. It is easy to feel down during those times and this author has a great way of putting things into perspective. While I am not strongly religious I did not love the religious references but these are not overbearing and overall I found the message and perspective extremely helpful, especially from someone who's "been through it"

Very quick read. Overall helpful if you've had a medical setback just a little too religious for me.

Life recently threw me for a loop. I know this phrase is cliché, but the definition works because when an unanticipated health issue sneaks up and knocks you on your derrière, the emotional fallout from being caught off guard can spin you round and round.

When you are a high gear, independent soul like me, slowing your roll doesn’t come easy. But, sometimes God needs us to let go of what we think we need to do so He can work out some stuff in our lives. Especially in the realm of physical, mental, or spiritual healing.

In my case, I needed a physical mending because pre-cancerous cells took up shop in my uterus. The remedy was a full hysterectomy which meant 6 weeks of doing a whole lot of nothing so my body could recover. For some reason, I went into the experience believing that 6 weeks was a huge exaggeration and I was hell-bent on bending the law of recovery averages.

Then real life happened just the way every trained doctor and been-there-done-that friend predicted. Plus more. Not only was the 6-week healing disclaimer on point, but I had unforeseen complications in the first two days post-op which sent me to the ER—in an ambulance, no less. According to my dramatic self, my tidy little world was in shambles. The pain from complications kicked my fanny—the type of misery I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy.

Before I knew it, my emotions began to teeter and my mental health tottered. For someone who errors on the side of control, all the uncontrollables had me a tad undone.

Cue, Christine Carter’s beautiful book. Let me tell you friends, this woman has been through the trenches of injury and health scares. She understands the nuances of healing because she’s been there. Multiple times over. My heart aches just thinking about what she’s endured.

Despite her health setbacks, Christine fought her way to the relieving side of pain with grace and perseverance. The pages of her book share a compassionate plan to help the rest of us navigate the unruly waters of recovery. Her loving and caring words are a paying-it-forward gift for you and me so we can better embrace those bristling moments when compromised health becomes a rude intruder in our ‘we want everything to go smoothly’ worlds.

Get this book. Read it. Share with your friends. I promise you’ll walk away feeling comforted and empowered to face the long haul of recuperation because Christine’s uncanny way of blending tenderness and wit will settle on you like a cool breeze.

I love this lady and am honored to call her friend. She’s the real deal—salt of the earth—and a fabulous writer. You can find her pouring out her heart and sharing her faith with candidness and profound insight in all kinds of places on the web and over on her blog at The Mom Cafe and across the social media world.

Oh, and I just found out—like this very second—that Christine found her way into a new Chicken Soup book. Of course! She’s that good and you can read her love story about her and her amazing man in Chicken Soup for the Soul Book “Miracle of Love”.

Thanks, Christine, for helping me heal! God bless you!
