Reflections and lessons learned:
“…she’s starting to feel tired now. She wants you to walk with her to her bed on the other side of the magical forest…”

I always trying and take a notable quote from a book for myself as a reminder (something that won’t ruin the book for other people though). The above quote is probably about 10 words in to a 30 minute narrative!! It took me several attempts to get through at least one of these, and I love the fact that it’s two voices - lovely magical stuff, not just for kids looking for a good rest

It's like guided meditation for little ones but comes off almost a little ominous. Pleading and heavy handed. Personally I wouldn't use it for my children because it's almost hypnotic and I feel like attempting to hypnotise children is probably a bad thing developmentally wise? I don't know.

Patiko autoriaus patarimai knygos gale.

This was a very interesting book to read. I am currently pregnant and reading books to my bump, so I can't speak for how effective this book is in its purpose of helping to get children to fall asleep, but I can imagine that, read properly, it would be an excellent tool. It seems to use a hypnotic effect to achieve its intention, inviting the reader to emphasize certain phrases, speak softly at other points, and even yawn. I also thought it was interesting that it was told in a second-person narrative. Overall, from a psychological standpoint, I found this book intriguing. The illustrations were adorable but, per the book's mission, not bright and engaging, so that if your audience does look at the pictures while you are reading, they won't be overly stimulated by them. I am definitely interested in revisiting this book in the future and trying it out on my little one someday!

I was battling my 3 yr old trying to get her to sleep. I wish I could say this book worked for her but it just didn't. However, my 9 yr old actually wanted me to read this to him. I was surprisingly shocked, after all he is into minecraft and spooky things. He said he wanted to see if the book could put him to sleep. Guess what?!? It did! I was totally shocked! When you have a bouncing 3 year old who can't concentrate long enough to even lay down I don't see this book helping. I'm going to keep this on my shelf and see if in a few months it will work. I loved the illustrations! Very whimsy and soft colors made for peaceful images to fall asleep with quickly.

Overlong narrative story that actually attempts to teach techniques for falling asleep. For me , the teaching of techniques by embedding them in the story made the story seem secondary and less engaging for a young child.

Once again, Carl-Johan Forssén Ehrlin is providing a variation on the hypnotism that he provided in "The Rabbit Who Wants to Fall Asleep."

Although he describes himself as:

* A "behavioral scientist with a bachelor's degree in psychology"
* A teacher at a Swedish university. (Unnamed.)
* A life coach
* A leadership trainer.

GUESS WHAT?

Among his many specialties, what's conspiculously lacking? Professional hypnotist.

Not surprising, really, since neither I nor any other professional hypnotists I know... would ever-ever-ever inflict a book like "The Little Elephant" on children.

Below I'm going to adapt some cautions toward the end of my review of his "Little Rabbit" book, plus some comments that developed there.

WHY THIS HYPNOSIS BOOK IS A BAD IDEA

Suppose that Parent Carl wanted his child Johan to sleep better, and therefore paid for a session for Johan to be helped by a professional hypnotist. After interviewing Johan, that hypnotist would design help for sleep and make Johan a recording to use at night.

No doubt the professional hypnotist would also speak to Parent Carl and give him some sensible precautions f0r avoiding unintended consequences.

SUGGESTIBLE CHILDREN CAN SUFFER UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES

Why is that?

Suppose that Johan and his family live in an apartment building with thin walls.

If he met with a professional hypnotist, Parent Carl would be cautioned to not play that recording at a time when fighting or violent TV shows could be heard in Johan's bedroom... because, in hypnosis, Johan would be highly suggestible and, thus, he'd be influenced strongly by anything he happened to accidentally hear while in hypnosis.

PARENTS, IF YOU WANT HYPNOTISM FOR YOUR CHILD, PAY FOR A SESSION

Going to a good, local, professional hypnotist would be the best use of hypnosis, imo.

It won't cost much more than a good haircut for women, these days.

ANOHER RESOURCE FOR DO-IT-YOURSELF

Another thing parents might do is to teach their child how to do Progressive Relaxation. (Not messing with a kid's mind, this is instead a useful skill to learn for help with falling asleep.)

SOMETHING ELSE TO THINK ABOUT, GOODREADERS

Did you ever watch TV late at night and see a ton of dopey, crude, commercials? I used to think, "How could this work? The TV rates must just be dirt cheap at this hour."

But after I became a professional hypnotist, I understood. Couch potatoes, especially those watching late at night, fall into light hypnosis, which makes them VERY SUGGESTIBLE.

Meine Meinung:

Very sweet story about any elephant wanting to fall asleep and wants to take her little friend (the child) with her on a journey through the magic forest to her bed by the beach. Not written as a traditional story, so it might not be for everyone, but it has lovely calm pictures, which are nice to look at.

Got it as a Christmas present for our little ones. The older (2-y-o) absolutely loves it and always wants me to read it for her before she goes to sleep. She doesn't always fall asleep with it (tho she has done that often), but it relaxes her and makes it easier to get her to go to bed. I really want to get the other two stories in this series, but they are quite hard to get here.

So, I'm an elementary librarian and I will not be adding this book to my collection. Unless you have a parent section, this is not really a book for the school library. It's intended for a parent to read to a child at bedtime to promote sleepiness. Kinda weird, I think, but I gave it three stars because if that's what you're looking for, it might be a good choice.

*I received a free copy of this book from the publisher through my district library services*

Wow, what a beautiful and unique book! I haven't tested its efficacy, but I really love the author's notes and how it is written. I'll definitely be getting a copy for my home library, just for use whenever I have a little visitor (or resident) who needs to go to sleep. :)
Also, endless fangirling over Sydney Hanson's illustrations.

Hypnotize your night owl. Both this and the little rabbit version are must haves for bedtime. My son who always wants to "stay up all night" and can read through several bedtime books without so much as a yawn falls asleep before we hit halfway. So relaxing, almost hypnotic and meditative. Couldn't recommend more highly

Bedtime story? I don’t think so

This book wasn’t what I thought it would be. It was so boring. I didn’t know what to do or think when I finished this book. I thought it was a bedtime story. Luckily I borrowed this from my library, because if I purchased it, I would be so upset.

Lukijan ääni on omiaan nukuttamaan jo alkumetreillä. Tarinalla sinällään ei oikeastaan ole väliä.
