Nicki Greenberg is a writer and illustrator with a special interest in sequential art narrative - a fancy way of describing comics.

Nicki's first books, The Digits series, were published when she was fifteen years old, and sold more than 380,000 copies. Since then, she has devoted most of her ink to comics, but has also written and illustrated fiction and non-fiction books for children.

At seventeen, Nicki fell in love with The Great Gatsby. Almost ten years later, she set out to pay tribute to F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel by interpreting it in comic art form. It took more than six years to complete this enormous labour of love.

This mad undertaking was followed by three years' passionate work on Shakespeare's Hamlet, which was finally staged on the page in 2010.

Nicki lives in Melbourne, Australia, with her family, their poodle and two bad cats. In her spare time she works as a lawyer.

When Ruby attempts to wake up all the reindeer before Christmas in order to get a head start on delivering gifts, she is met with

"Too early!" they grumped. "Back to bed, right away!"

"Huh! Too early, my antlers! Each year it's the same, We run out of time and then I get the blame! We rush and we muddle. We only just make it!"

When Ruby can't get any reindeer to join her in delivering the gifts early, she decides to deliver them herself. But, oops, they are so heavy that she falls from the sky right outside George and Amelia's house.

"There's still ONE MORE DAY before Christmas!" they cried. "And someone might see you! Quick, get that inside!"

When George and Amelia's parents nix the reindeer staying at their house, the kids decide to take Ruby to school. As it is, a reindeer is going to work just lovely in the school Christmas play. But minutes before showtime it occurs to Ruby that there is a sleigh full of things that need to be delivered.

Is Ruby going to be able to pull off getting the sleigh back to the North Pole? And what about Santa? Will he find the sleigh missing?

My Thoughts

What Concerned Me: The story didn't feel cohesive and really didn't work for me.

What I Liked Most: The illustrations are expressive, fun, and colorful.

What a silly, adorable book. Such a fun story about a mischievous reindeer. You THOUGHT you knew who all the reindeer were... think again. Ruby, the red-nosed reindeer makes her debut in this story. Her brother, Rudolph, is ill on Christmas Eve and so Ruby steps in to help. But... things don't necessarily go as planned. A definite must-read for the holiday season.

A great Christmas book to read. It is about Rudolph who goes on an adventure. He ends up performing in a play until he remembers that he needs to help deliver the presents with Santa and the other reindeers.

Cute picture book about Rudolph's sister, Ruby. Rudolph is too sick to pull the sleigh this year, so his sister Ruby has to do it, but she is incredibly mischievous and gets bored easily.

If you made all of Father Christmas’s Reindeers line up, you would find it pretty tricky to find the naughtiest one among them as they are so well behaved. However, there is one Reindeer who is so naughty that she does not get asked to pull the sleigh very often. On certain occasions needs must and when Rudolf is ill on Christmas Eve, the only help comes in the form of his little sister Ruby – dear oh deer.

Christmas books are great fun for children, but there are so many out there. They have the holiday period covered in so many different ways that it becomes difficult to produce something new. ‘The Naughtiest Reindeer’ written and illustrated by Nicki Greenberg does manage to do something a little differently by sprinkling a little holiday chaos onto the situation. It is not that Ruby the Reindeer means to be naughty, just that she is so enthusiastic, curious and full of energy that everything she seems to do goes a little crazy.

Ruby is a great character; children will either recognise themselves in her, or someone they know. Greenberg structures the story well and has made sure that events stay good natured. Ruby is has an innocent type of naughtiness and the other Reindeers are always trying to help when they can; it just so happens that not all goes to plan. The narrative is fun; Ruby gets herself and Santa into quite a lot of trouble, but it is the ending that proves the best element, wrapping up in a clever way that is both sweet and in keeping with the spirt of Christmas.

Other elements of the book are not managed quite as well. The chaotic nature of Ruby sometimes seems to spill onto the page itself. Some of the pages are packed with pictures and text, making everything seem a little muddled. The book is aimed at a younger reader, but the formatting does mean that they will have to concentrate if they are to read by themselves. Thankfully, the book rewards observation as there are a few visual gags that a tiny bit rude, but very funny.

Illustration wise the book may also be a required taste. The Reindeers themselves look great, a cross between the real thing and a wooden carving. Whilst this style looks great for the hoofed characters, the same cannot be said of the humans. Santa for one looked a little sad to me, his features a little off and not at all inviting. Seeing as this is not a book that concentrates on the men and women, it is perhaps not vital, but everyone likes their Father Christmas to be jolly.

Despite a couple of misgiving, it is the playfulness and the warmth of ‘The Naughtiest Reindeer’ that shines through the most. Greenberg has taken the essence of Christmas and found a new way of exploring it. Children will learn to be conscious of those around them and to think not only of themselves; two winter gifts that any parent would not mind from their child. Original review on thebookbag.co.uk

Rudolph is in bed sick so another reindeer is needed to help pull the sleigh but when Ruby is chosen the other reindeer are all horrified, she is sooo naughty. Ruby tries and tries to be good but it is just a little boring waiting for Santa and checking what is happening inside the houses is so much fun. This is a fun story that any young mischief maker will respond to with giggles and snorts. A real treat.

The Naughtiest Reindeer by Nicki Greenberg – aawwww, poor Rudolph has a ‘sick day’ on Christmas… too bad they have to bring his sister Ruby, the naughtiest reindeer along instead! She wreaks havoc everywhere she goes and you won’t expect the conclusion which I appreciated… or maybe you will and I was clueless… but this is a cute book that I think my Y1 teachers will adore and then adapt into a holiday production in the next year, oh boy!

A rhyming Christmas offering in which Rudolf-the-red-nosed-reindeer's troublemaker of a sister substitutes for him on the Christmas Eve journey to deliver presents.

It feels a little long for a read aloud, but maybe that's just because I wasn't feeling this one for a read aloud like I thought I might.

Overall, it's nice enough. PreK-2.

Greenberg is back on track with this third instalment about Ruby the reindeer with a whole lot of heart but some very miss placed intentions. She's naughty but lovable just like this jolly Christmas tale. Pictures and verse that pop will please those under eight.
