Bioorganic life forms that can look like anything, be anything, and are bonded to one person forever. Some might be cute and fluffy, others are warriors. It is your DNA that decides.
Since Squall rescued Phyre and Eli from Nightshop, she hasn’t been sleeping well. Nightmares of that day continue to haunt her, and it’s affecting her ability to focus. To make things worse, the annual meka exhibition is only weeks away, and to compete Squall and Eli need a squad of four. The situation is already impossible, but at the exhibition’s gala dinner Viridis Morelia, the woman who kidnapped Phyre, is introduced as Lifesphere Inc’s new media liaison officer.
Drant Ellis, tries to warn Squall that if she and her new team compete, she isn’t just going to lose. She’s going to die in an ‘accident’ and Viridis will escape blame-free.
When Drant goes missing, Squall realizes the cost for protecting her is going to be his life. Time is running out for Squall to escape Viridis’ plan. And time is running out for Drant.
Born in 1985, Talitha Kalago lives on the beautiful Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia. She loves reading, video games, documentaries, horror movies and vegetable patches. She lives with an alarming collection of previously abandoned or unwanted animals that include dogs, cats, birds and snakes. She loves aquascaping and dedicates too much time to her numerous aquariums and aquatic invertebrates.
There is a 23% chance she is watching a horror movie as you read this.
After the battle at the illegal meka arena, Nightshop, Squall has been trying to get back to normal life as quickly as possible. It's not easy with the recurring nightmares that plague her. But lack of sleep or not, she is determined to put together a squad for the annual meka exhibition. Which means she and Eli need two more people. Not the easiest task with Eli's anti-social tendencies.
When a gala dinner puts them into the path of Viridis Morelia, the woman who dragged them into the battle at Nightshop, a seemingly benign meka exhibition becomes so much more sinister. Soon Squall and Eli's new team members, Cain and Locke, may mean the difference between their survival or death. And since neither Cain nor Locke have battled their meka before, the odds are not good.
Acquisition was a great start to this series. It introduced a very different world full of complex and unfamiliar science, politics and social structure in a way that was easy to understand and didn't bog the action down. In Duplicity the main parts of the world are already set so there are so many other places to go with the story. There are some really amazing additions as far as meka go. Not only in how they look or their abilities, but in what is possible with meka. From the first book, I knew that meka weren’t only used for fighting, but the possibilities weren’t explored in much depth. In Duplicity the possibilities are blown wide open. I really hope that there’s more of this in the next few books.
Additional characters are a breath of fresh air too. Cain is studious and calm in direct opposition to his ADHD meka. I like that he isn’t ashamed of himself, no matter how much people tease him. But Locke and Quinn have become new favourites of mine. The relationship dynamic between them isn’t explored that deeply in this novel, but the strength of it is tangible.
I don't know how I feel about Viridis (the main villain) yet, but Moray's Squad are brilliant as antagonists. They're aggressive, ruthless yet focused enough that they won't forget an enemy until they've destroyed it.
While there’s action and excitement enough to keep the middle grade target audience riveted, this is the kind of book that they’ll be able to return to and enjoy years on as well. There are so many places the story could go from here with these very different personalities. Can’t wait to see where the story takes me.
