A sinkhole is the perfect place to hide a body. Or is it?
While standing over the skeletons of young women discovered deep beneath the earth, Deputy Sheriff Ingrid Olaffsen knew she was facing the challenge of her career. One she thought she’d never see working in rural Minnesota.
She was wrong.
Soon there’s the disappearance of yet another girl and Ingrid realizes that she’s on the trail of a killer. One she has to stop, before the unthinkable happens.
When Michael Wilson appears in Ingrid’s life and investigation, Ingrid is torn. She is attracted to the handsome, enigmatic former marine with sad eyes, a slow drawl and a killer smile. More so than she has ever been in her life, but she doesn’t fully trust his motives.
Ingrid doesn’t know whether to cuff him or kiss him. But she does know that the only place she feels strong, safe and whole is in his arms.
How can Ingrid believe in love when she can’t even trust the ground beneath her feet?
I wanted to like this book, but it was simply an unbelievable plot. I could see where the author was trying to recreate the writing style of authors like M. William and David M. Salkin, but I kept being pulled out of the story by obvious rehashed writing phases.
I really tried to retain my attention throughout and be drawn into the rural Minnesota life, but the monotonous rehashed pharses, much too similiar to other books out there, forced me to put it away. A thoroughly detestable read.
"Dangerous Ground" by M.R. Rutter is not a recommended read.
Read instead either "Dangerous Ground" by M. William and David M. Salkin.
It felt like the author had a rudimentary understanding of physical anthropology and forensic investigations, and hoped that readers wouldn't realize that she was essentially bullshitting most of the details.
Other than that, the writing was bad. It needs a good line edit, and reads like a tenth grade essay. Boring, trite, not realistic, and then I find out the author is actually a racist who doxxes people who don't like her book.
Sweetie, you should be happy anybody even wants to read this trash.
This author hadn’t even crossed my radar until she showed her ass on Twitter. I decided to give the book a quick look just to see if the ego matched the writing but...that was a mistake. DNF 10%.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It has a strong female lead, a hot love interest, an intricate crime plot that keeps you guessing, and a bone-chilling villain. The police procedural has lots of cool forensic details. I found them fascinating, and they made the story seem authentic. So did all the farm talk. The novel is set in small-town Minnesota and the descriptions of farm life and the kind of work it entails really brought the place to life. But by far my favorite thing about this story was the main character, Ingrid, a deputy sheriff determined to protect the young women of Minnesota from a psychopathic killer. I loved Ingrid’s relationship with her sisters. I felt like I really got to know them. The love story is by turns hot, sweet, and harrowing. And the best part? The author uses Ingrid and her strength of spirit to turn a couple romance tropes on their head. It’s a ton of fun.
Megan Rutter’s Dangerous Grounds digs down into the back roads and sinkholes of rural Minnesota, where a cop fleeing Minneapolis’s crime rates and her own growing cynicism tries to rebuild a life with her sisters on the family farm after the death of her parents. But the rural towns and countryside that were supposed to be safe and wholesome have been revealed as the dumping ground for a serial killer who’s been at work over the last twenty years. The back woods weren’t so safe at all.
Full of great twists and turns, lots of sex positivity, and the most sarcastic family since the Addams—an enjoyable, mold-breaking police prodecural that moves crime out of the big city and to places to hit (for me) closer to home.
Great female lead in a well told story. Lots of twists will keep you wondering where this is going. I enjoyed the book and was eager to see who was the culprit. Good job. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader=s Copy of this book.
Some books grab you and don't let go until you've read them. The mystery in DANGEROUS GROUND is a creepy one. The heroine, Ingrid, navigates a world of rural politics and small-town thinking to catch a serial killer. While I liked the hero, Michael, I especially sympathized with Ingrid as she balanced a hard family obligation and the pressure of her first big investigation as a deputy in rural Minnesota. The voice was strong and the detail just right, not too much. I highly recommend this one for any fan of mysteries or romantic suspense.
I chose to read this book at the recommendation of a very good friend, M. R. Rutter. She had mentioned she wrote a book a while back and I never got around to it. I finally did.
Excellent plot line with well fleshed out characters. As a person who reads a ton, poor character development is a major pet peeve. The characters of this book come alive and make it an intense experience. I want to read more about this intense family.
Suspense, Mystery, Romance and amazing. I really enjoyed reading the story. I started reading the story and couldn't stop every page was excellent!! I highly recommend this story you won't be disappointed!
This was good. I enjoyed the characters, especially the heroine and her family. The Olaffsons are certainly an entertaining family. I'll admit, this isn't my usual fare, but I grabbed it on Amazon and decided to give it a try because of the interesting mystery/thriller elements. The killer was a little stereotypical and the love interest...*shrugs* Other than that, it was really good.
Dangerous Ground is an intoxicatingly intelligent masterpiece that will leave you breathless with its sizzling intensity and capture your heart with its potent beauty. This is a story that will transport you to a meticulously crafted world where not all is as it seems, and evil wears the mask of innocence and beauty. Behind the benign is a lethal force that will take without thinking and never pause to think of more than its own desires. You will find yourself diving deep into this ocean of tumultuous waves that will threaten to take more from you then just your life.
Ingrid has fought to earn her place in her current job while those around her poke and jeer at her for being a woman deputy. She can do her job just as well as a man, and she will do whatever she needs to do to prove that claim. However, she finds herself stretched thin as she tries to meet the demands of her family left broken by the loss of her parents. As if she doesn’t have enough on her mind, a stranger comes barreling into her life making her heart feel things she isn’t sure she can explain. Will she find herself heading head first into failure when she is confronted with the most demanding and torturous case of her career, or will an unexpected stranger give her the strength she needs to pull it all together and fight for everything that she is worth?
I was completely impressed by the incredible depth of the characters and the spectacular storyline that caught my attention and never let go. I was in so deep that I completely lost track of time while reading this wonderful romantic thriller. There is nothing better than being sucked into such a fantastic story with characters who challenge and broaden your mind! I couldn’t get enough and hated to see it end. It was a wonderful ride with ingenious twists and turns that I will never forget.
M.R. Rutter has stolen my heart and put herself on my short list of favorite authors. I cannot truly wait to see what she creates next! She has given me an excitement that is uncontainable and infectious. What a remarkably talented author!!
In Dangerous Ground, we are thrown into a world of utter chaos in a small town in rural Minnesota, hometown to Deputy Sheriff Ingrid Olaffsen and her 7 sisters. After working 8 years in the Cities’ Vice and Sex Crime Units, Ingrid is ready to come home and live a much simpler life where crime isn’t as rampant as in the Cities, or so she thought. With the discovery of several skeletons of young women found in a sinkhole comes the dreaded question: Do we have a serial killer in our midst? Ingrid is made the lead detective in what is coined as the Cave Girls case and she is determined to find this killer before he can claim any more lives.
Enter Michael Wilson into the mix and the temperature gets hotter by the second. Michael brings his own aura of mystery with him. The sparks between them, however, can’t be denied. This attraction is something neither of them has ever experienced before. After a few of his secrets are discovered, Ingrid is unsure of whether to trust him or arrest him.
OMG!!! I absolutely loved this story. It’s full of suspense, mystery with twists and turns around every corner. I am a huge fan of strong, independent, kick-ass female leads and Deputy Sheriff Ingrid Olaffsen is by far one of my favorites. Not only is she smart and intuitive, she’s also a force to be reckoned with when it comes to kicking some serious criminal butt. I loved the characters and the plot of the story is insanely good. Trust me, you want to read this story.
Rutter's debut novel is full of suspense, mystery, and romance. Her attention to detail is impressive and makes for an intriguing storyline. The main character, Ingrid, is a no nonsense cop that becomes caught up in a serial killer investigation in small town American. She is witty, cunning, and an all around snarky bad ass. Her leading man, Michael is her perfect match. As the two are thrown together in this gripping tale of murder and mayhem their attraction to one another will not be denied. The down and dirty gritty details of this story makes for a true page turner.
Solid twists, likable heroine, good humor, and an intriguing tale. The story follows a cop investigating a body found in a sink hole in a rural town. It only escalates from there.
Got this from a “blind date with a book” gimmick at a bookstore that clearly used it to get rid of their clearance section. It even still has the red sticker on the back.
The hilarious part is that it’s signed by the author who gave it away to a friend who obviously also gave it away to a bookstore very much unread.
I got like 5 pages in before I had to look up the excuse for a publishing house that let this thing get out.
My kid and I are reading it to each other laughing our butts off.
She’s reading it with an UwU voice and it fits perfectly.
Idk who the 5 star reviews are from, but do not believe them.
I am not one to write reviews for the books I read, however, this is story that deserves accolades for a well written piece. The various parts meld together beautifully. Lead-ins to the multitudes of plot segments are well done and the-ins are excellent. All in all, this tale was well developed, organized and told in a dynamic voice. WELL DONE!
Sinkhole or shithole? Cesspool! Awful novel -- the kind of pappy crap I should have expected from the ridiculous, overwrought pretext. The plot never thickens, it just flushes.
That's all you need to know. Don't "waste" your time.
And LOL just who the f**k are the phony boloneys here raving in their reviews about this crap? Friends & family or the author herself? Dozens of consecutive 5 star ratings? I'm pissed cuz dummy me bought the hype.
And since, I've read on Twitter that this woman M R Rutter is convicted in the State of Minnesota for animal abuse. It seems hundreds of poor sheep were left to die on this sheer imbeciles ranch! Pun intended.
Maybe the phony boloney writer of this terrible bore of a book might try managing a McDonald's or a Wendy's or a bowling alley -- anything! -- cuz she's no author, and apparently no farmer, as well.
Don't "waste" dispose of your time. Pure putrid crap.
BLOODY KOTEX IN A SINKHOLE I'd heard about the author on Twitter -- much of it provocative -- so when by chance I came upon a copy of this novel, I gave it a shot. I agree with the reviewer here who has categorized it in her "writers who suck" file. Not only is the title incredibly hackneyed -- by my count more than one dozen novels are titled "Dangerous Ground" -- the prose is so plainly pukish & the plot so pathetically cliche, I gave up after chapter 5, hurling the thing across the reading room. Larry Bird! Three points swish in the can!
As is declared mightily on Twitter, selfproclaimed "Farmer Author" M R Rutter is indeed a fraud of an "author." I found nothing sustainable about this vaIn, silly work.
Ingrid and Michael's story is a dark romance, murder mystery. As Ingrid and Michael get to know one another, remains of murdered women are being found around their county. I was unsure until the big reveal who the criminal was. This story is very suspenseful and kept me on the edge of my seat.
