I have been following JD Mader's writing for about 6 years. First introduced to him through online flash fiction and his (then) regular posts on Indies Unlimited website.

I'm a fan of his writing, there is no doubt. He's a passionate writer, his scenes are written from the core - the essence - of what it means to be human and more than a bit broken. It's a point of view he captures and expands upon in a unique and strong way.

Although I really liked Boxed In, I didn't love it. This is only because, I think for me I like Mader's writing in short form fiction. For me, that is the absolute most effective way to read his intense prose.

His amazing collection "no eyes, please" is the vanguard by which I measure all Mader's writing. My hope is that everyone will buy that book.

This is the third book in the Matt Stark series. If I were to list my theory of influences for each book I would say book one would be Louis L'Amour, Book two: Hemmingway perhaps, and the most recent Steinbeck ala Cannery Row. The events take place immediately after the conclusion of Hannigan's Fight. It brings together the entire cast from the previous books and introduces a couple of new ones. The characters around Matt are as lovable, distressing, and at times as dysfunctional as Matt. I enjoyed getting to know them all better. There are two additional characters for whom the author has a special affinity for. They are the City of San Francisco and pretty much any motorcycle. I was pleased to see an old friend of mine, in particular. A Norton (please tell me it was a Commando 850!)

The book explores the subject of family, a family of friends. It is many parts tribal, many parts traditions. Even simple totems of family like a pocket knife and tools become metaphors of interpersonal relationships. There are two things this writer really knows. His own Bay Area and Motorbikes. The sections dealing with these subjects are some of the best you'll find in any book. A touching story about a most unusual band of misfits and secret superstars. Great read.
