A sci-fi shorty that brings some action, government conspiracy, and one man’s quest for truth who must make some very tough life or death decisions. Easy breezy reading and again, a nice quickie if you need one!

Love in Retrograde has a really cool science fiction premise, in a top-secret (can’t-even-discuss-details-about-plot-or-characters-in-a-review-without-giving-away-spoilers) kind of way.

I liked this for what it was, but boy did I want more. I guess I’m just greedy like that.

In brief, this story follows an ambitious scientist intern named Kelly, living and working in futuristic New London, as he finds himself suddenly entrenched in and dealing with the questionable moral ramifications of a top-secret government project entitled Project Mars.

I honestly can’t say more than that without spoiling the goods, but I will say the plot was tightly woven and highly original. There was also a small dash of romance too, which was just enough to sate my needs.

As always, Cochet’s writing is in fine form, with my focus being particularly drawn to the impressive world-building; I found myself fully immersed in this futuristic, tech-heavy world from the get-go, and my only honest complaint is that this wasn’t longer.

I am going to try my best to not give spoilers here and it's going to be tough. I can't even talk about the second MC without giving things away that I think you should read for yourself, so...well, here goes.

Kelly Sutton is a young intern on Project Mars. And even though he has no real idea what the project is really for, he believes the party line about it being for the benefit of humanity. Everyone working on the project is only told what they need to know for their particular tasks, so no one, other than very high level people, really know the full extent of what is being done.

Kelly is a rather gung ho kind of guy and he is like a kid in a toy store. He loves going to work and he loves that he is doing something important. He really wants to do more for the project, though. He kind of feels under-utilized and he wants to be able to advance his career and do the really important stuff.

This is one of those cases where a person should really be careful for what they wish. On the other hand, what he discovers really does change the course of his life, in so many ways. Enough so, that I'd say that Kelly definitely got to the important stuff.

I liked Kelly, though I would have loved to actually get to know him better. And I would have loved to have gotten to see just how Project Mars came about. Love in Retrograde is a delicious taste, but I'm greedy, I want a whole meal.

Oh, how I would love to read this story as a full length novel! For being so short, I was actually impressed at how well done it was. This is Charlie Cochet we're talking about here, so I'm not really surprised. But it is hard to really get a good read on the characters with the timeline being so condensed. I didn't really feel the romance. I liked the characters and I saw the attraction, even the friendship, but there just wasn't enough page time to establish a romance or really even a relationship, considering some world building also needed to happen to set the scene.

I still enjoyed Love in Retrograde, though and would give it 3 *I want more* stars.

This was cute. A little rushed with the ending, but still a sweet sci-fi romance. Kelly and Mars seem like an unlikely couple, which yeah!, Mars was created in a lab. But Mars is a caring person, yes person, who wants to do what's right. His "owners" have other ideas and want to use him as a weapon. But Kelly to the rescue! I found the ending a little unbelievable and not 100% satisfactory. What are Mars and Kelly going to do for money? Won't Kelly be bored on an island? I mean, he is a scientist with an active mind always wanting to be challenged. What about Jordan and Lucius, they were in charge of Mars but cared for him as a human being. Will they be in charge of the company/program now that the big bad guy is gone?

Lots of unanswered questions but this is still a cute and sweet romance, with some nice laughs tossed in. I love Charlie Cochet and I do indeed recommend this. Delightfully entertaining. 4 stars.

Good concept, but the writing was... uh... lacking. A ridiculous amount of tell-not-show, and everything seemed rushed, as though the story was too big for the novella format but the author was determined to make it a novella. There was also every cliche in the book and no real plot twists or "aha!" moments. Just cliches all the way, baby.

Also, Americans writing British people tend to be... uh... I don't want to generalise (I'm sure if I wrote an American, it would be a giant cliche) but it's, uh. Not good. At a moment of extreme stress, someone says, "You've got to be bloody kidding me. What is this, a bloody BBC drama?" Um. No. We wouldn't... say that. And also, when Kelly is being a giant dickhead, a character is all "You bloody wanker." Ehhhhhhh. Wanker is what you call people if your friend is being an idiot or a random stranger picks a fight with you. If your friend is being a legitimate horrible arsehole, "wanker" sounds... incongruous? I can't really explain it, and I guess I can't blame a non-British person for not knowing the extremely subtle implications of the word "wanker" but it just jarred me, especially when the writing was already jarring me for being... not that great.

But at the end of the day, it was pretty fun, it wasn't horrible and I kind of enjoyed it. The writing just had a LOT to be desired.

(But seriously, "bloody" is a mild swear word, like if someone spills a drink on you and you go "Oh, bloody hell." If people are trying to murder us and the people we love, we will say fuck. Profusely. But Americans think we're too proper to say "fuck" I guess. Look, most of us are working class and say the c-word all the time, Downton Abbey has brainwashed y'all.)

(Uh, I didn't mean this to be 75% a rant about non-Brits writing Brits but I guess it came out like that so, uh, sorry)

I´m SAD :(

This starts so perfect!!! Wonderful surroundings, characters, interesting plot, and humor!!!
But suddenly… all is ending and What had happened? I DON'T KNOW.
All is so abrupt and confused :(
I think this could be a great book if it was longer with a slower development ~

Mars and Kelly are just the cutest ever! This is definitely a classic Charlie Cochet style! I loved the super adorable characterization. The usual Dex/Sloane characters formula is everything! I loved Mars and how he ‘fell in love’ with Kelly even before meeting him. What a precious AI-hunk! The whole story was quick but it doesn’t feel rushed. Now, I really want to read the story of Lucius and Jordan so I hope Charlie’s planning to write one.

So this is a book where there is a limit to what I can talk about without giving away some basic spoilers about the story and the other hero. This stuff is revealed fairly early on, but still there is an element of surprise to the story, so bear with me as I am going to be a bit vague and use some spoiler tags.

I liked the set up here with Kelly an enthusiastic intern thrilled to be on this major project, only to find out that everything he believed about it is a lie. There is some romance and a bit of suspense built into this alternate world, futuristic story. Overall I feel like the plot was engaging and I like how the story plays out. As always, Cochet’s writing is solid and the story flows smoothly.

My issues here mostly centered around things being a little too simplistic and aspects of the story being too weakly developed. This is a novella, so not a long book, but I still felt like there were quite a few areas that needing fleshing out. For example, we know that the story takes place in the future in an alternate world where the major governments have collapsed, but we get no information about when it actually takes place, nor anything about the current political system, or much world building at all. We learn the government is involved in the bad stuff, but I had no sense of anything about the government structure (or even certainty about the country).

Passionate scientists can be dangerous for many reasons, and some of them are explored in this entirely possible futuristic story. Between Kelly, a highly motivated intern who wants nothing more than a career as a scientist, and his discovery of what is going on behind the closed doors of the lab he works in, there is enough suspense to keep things interesting. Kelly’s fervent belief in “science for science’s sake” is thoroughly tested, and when he ends up in the fight of his life instead of becoming famous for his meticulous research everything changes before he knows what’s happening.

WOW! Simply OUTSTANDING! Near midnight I realized I can't sleep so decided to start reading this one. I was actually afraid to start.. I don't usually like Sci-Fi (novels, movies, etc) but as I'm going through Charlie's booklist I decided to give this one a go and I'm so glad I did! I couldn't and wouldn't put this one down until I finished. WOW. What an emotional ride. It was SO not what I was expecting, though I'm not even sure what I DID expect.

I have very little I can say about this novel not to spoiler it. A word can destroy it for you and I really don't want to do that! We are in the future, New London to be precise. Kelly Sutton has been working on a special project called "Mars". Though he did a lot of work behind the scenes he actually doesn't know what this project IS or what it DOES or suppose to do. Yet he wants more, and as he decides to ask to be more involved he stumbles upon a conversation he shouldn't have heard making his wish come true - now he is SERIOUSLY involved in the project.

Spending day in and day out, a few months pass by before he realizes that he is even more "invested" in the project than he thought possible. He doesn't know what to do. He is "dumped" in the middle of it trying to figure out his feelings, his actions, what is expected from him and in the middle of all that there's a man he can't fathom. He affects him, he takes him to his limits, he makes him question so much more of everything around him and it mostly confuses the HELL out of him.

Yet when the government gets TOO involves Kelly realizes there is one this he is GOING to do, and it's protect the one he came to cherish.

That's all I'm willing to say. I know, it feels too vague, too little. Yet I rather not. I think the best thing would be for you to grab this one and delve into it. It exceptionally well written, beautiful, emotional yet at the end action packed. It has it all though it's quite short. I feel like I've got the whole story. I didn't need anything else. We got our HEA and it was simply BEAUTIFUL.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

A sci-fi fluffy love story set in New London, as in London in a New World after the collapse of the Old World (DUH!) due to global corrupted government and economic failings.

Riddled with scientific stuff phrasing (bio-whatever, nano-whatnot) that my poor brain struggled to understand (never an A-student in science-class); and mashed up of retro 1950s movies and songs; this brought an insta-love between a young science intern and the gentleman project. Uhm... I don't seem to make any sense, huh.

In short: it's cute, predictable, with HEA. There. Oh, and a fitting cover, too! :)

I don’t know why but I thought this was going to be steampunk; it isn’t. It is a thought provoking, albeit shortish, story that raises questions about the nature of sentience and humanity; although maybe I was just in the mood to consider deep questions. On the negative side there seems to be a lot missing, as if the author’s muse got ahead of her and then the editor was snoozing.

Kelly is an intern hoping to advance his career by being part of Project Mars. After overhearing an argument between the two Doctors heading the project, Kelly is taken to the secure section where he discovers Project Mars is actually a human, biologically engineered to be a super-soldier. He does not expect to be confined to Mar’s living quarters, or start caring for this weapon.

This was a fun adventure/love story. As a novella it is a quick read, but the world building and character development is enough to give the illusion of a longer read. None of this story drags, and the quiet before the storm is sweet.

The erotica wasn’t all it could have been but I’ll forgive it because the rest was thorough enough. The plot development and character development was great for a novella. I think it could have been broadened just a bit to give it that edge, but what was there was good enough to know the writer has skill in bringing a fleshed out story.

The action portion was a little too fast paced which took away from the story. Even though this is science-fiction, more would have been better. More explanation of what Mars was doing during the action, more explanation on the villains and their purpose, and more about the supporting characters. These all seemed to be a bit stifled. Obviously I enjoyed this enough to want more, which speaks for itself.

I would recommend this to sci-fi fans, who enjoy genetically engineered humans, conspiracies, and some shoot ‘em up action.

This was a sweet and creative novella by author Charlie Cochet. I’ve read many of Charlie’s books and I’m always left feeling happy and entertained.

Love in Retrograde is a little sci-fi meets real life. The concept isn’t far off of a world that someday will be real. Kelly is an intern, and Mars is… well Mars is special. I loved Mars’s innocence mixed in with his understanding and what he’s been taught.

Great small ensemble with this story. I referred to them in my head as Kelly and Mars’ team lol. I really thought they were perfect in this story and gave it that extra something.

Like all of Charlie’s books I was sad to see it end. This is the downfall to novellas. I always want more more more!

Great read!

While short and unconventional, I found this story a lovely escape and a beautiful little love story.

Kelly is an intern working for Project Mars. The world changed when governments collapsed and corporations took over, but everything has been for the better. Now science rules and people do things for the betterment of mankind. At least Kelly believes that. However, his work on Project Mars has been hampered by not having clearance or learning what it truly is. When he does learn what Mars is, things shift. When he learns the plans for Mars Kelly has to decide if he'll keep turned his head and believing everything is roses, or see what it truly happening.

The love story between Kelly and the man he finds in Project Mars is mostly very PG, which makes it quite sweet. It is a relationship borne of conversations and time, of movie watching and a bit of cuddling. It is also a grounding one, keeping Kelly sane as the world tilts on its axis for him. Together the two forge new ground but they also take the oldest path of all of falling in love. While the relationship is a fledgling and the book is a beginning more than anything, it was a beginning I loved and found captivating to read. Excellent short!

The collapse of failed economies and greedy governments usher in the Photonic Revolution, a conglomeration of technologies, and puts ambitious but introverted American intern Kelly Sutton on the highly compartmentalized team working on Project Mars. Intending to ask for a promotion, Kelly's reply is more than the answer he was looking for.

While this enjoyable, short, interesting and thought provoking premise was enjoyable and the ending a bit abrupt for my taste, this reader wanted more. This extremely intriguing and engaging short pushes the reader's imagination and invites opinions on the boundaries of society's morality.

I really enjoyed this futuristic sci-fi short. It was like entering an episode of the Twilight Zone. It was great and I loved the twists in the plot as the story progressed. Of course I would have loved it even more if there was more to tell at the end, but that ending was very much in keeping with the Zone.
