A FAMILY FOR CHRISTMAS
CHRISTMAS IN THE HIGHLANDS, BOOK ONE

Laird Malcolm Sutherland needs a bride. He has few requirements of his new wife; demands he should have insisted with his former betrothed—namely, honesty, loyalty, and resources.

Lady Rossalyn Gordon will do anything to be rid of her tyrant father, even if that means deceiving the man who offers her an escape. If revealed, those secrets will either bring her mercy, or thrust her back into the hands of the devil who sired her.

When Rossalyn’s bastard of a father arrives at Sutherland Keep, going back on his word and ordering her return, Malcolm must decide if he can forgive his wife enough to listen to his heart and have a family for Christmas.

HIS BY CHRISTMAS
CHRISTMAS IN THE HIGHLANDS, BOOK TWO

Fiona Sutherland longs for love with the man she has pined after since she was a lass. When he weds another she is devastated, and questions why the man she pledged her heart to has forsaken a vow made in their youth. Could loving her be so hard?

Cameron Munro adores Fiona from afar, knowing her heart has been set on another. She is everything he desires—strong, loyal, and fiery in spirit.

Determined, he pledges to prove his love to her and win Fiona’s heart by Christmas.

I'm a mom, wife, and writer. A Michigan native, I've moved from one Rochester to another Rochester to marry the love of my life. Life is exciting, exhausting, chaotic and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I love writing historical novels with a Celtic flair. Scotland and Ireland are my favorite locations to write about. Nothing is better than a hero in a kilt and a strong heroine to give him the run for his money!

I very much enjoyed reading this book and both stories were well written. The first story involves Malcolm and Rossalyn who enter a marriage of convenience which doesn't start off too well when Rossalyn's secret is revealed. Malcolm, who has trust issues, is livid but soon finds himself falling in love with his new wife.

We also meet Fiona and Cam whose story is told in the second story. Fiona has been in love with Malcolm since they were children and cannot accept that he's married to someone else. Cam, who also grew up with Fiona and Malcolm, has been in love with Fiona for years but it isn't until Malcolm is married to Rossalyn that he attempts to woo Fiona. She does not make it easy for him and it takes a while before she realizes who it is she truly is in love with! It sounds complicated but the two stories blend together and make for a delightful read.

I received an ARC of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

I tried. Yuck.

Started off like most medieval romances. A union neither partner wants.
Them throw in “the woman scorned” Fiona, who obviously hated the bride, and the bride returns the sentiment and adds “stay away from my husband” attitude, words and innuendo.

Then, adversity, horrible father appears hell bent on destroying her happiness.

And wha does she do? Takes advice from and listens to Fiona..

I stopped reading, too Freaking stupid for anyone with any, even one cell, of brains in their heads.

This is not a rating based on anything other than it is not a PG book. I only made it through three chapters and there were editing mistakes, but the story line seemed promising. I am just looking for more than discussion on loins and breast fondling etc...

This was a complete impulse pick up from Kindle Unlimited. I wanted some Christmas historical romance and I was not too picky about anything else. These are two short novellas focused around the Sutherland clan in historical Scotland. Lots of Scottish language and clans, without focusing too much on the historical context.

The first romance was about Rossalyn who is to marry Malcolm on the order of her father who wants Malcolm's soldiers. She marries him and he expects her to be chaste, since he has been betrayed in the past, but of course there is definite proof that she was not a virgin when she married him and everything goes from there. I thought this was sweet enough. I was not blown away by Rossalyn or Malcolm and I thought the big end scene was ridiculous partly because it does not give the impression that Rossalyn is used to thinking things through. Despite this, I liked reading it and thought the length fit the story well.

The next story is about Fiona and Cameron. The main thing that stood out for me is that Fiona is the 'evil ex' in the first story and here she gets a chance to tell her side of the story. I do not like how Rossalyn came across as almost saintly in this one but I did enjoy how Fiona's feelings weren't just written off and she was given the appropriate sympathy, even if it was made plain to her that Malcolm was definitely married and that would not be changing anytime soon. Cameron did not impress me that much. We got more about Fiona in this story than him and while I did not mind that too much, I got far too much of a sense from Cameron that he just expected Fiona to turn to him now that Malcolm was no longer available and he had been with her growing up too. There was no indication that he realised that love does not work like that. It was a little frustrating. Still, these novellas were better than I had expected and it was enjoyable way to spend a couple of hourse.

3 stars!

The two stories presented in Christmas in the Highlands are intertwined and that makes both more interesting. The first, A Family for Christmas, is the story of Malcolm and Rossalyn. Rossalyn is forced into marriage with Malcolm by her father. As Laird of Clan Sullivan, Malcolm is marrying Rossalyn to secure an alliance with Clan Gordon for supplies and joint protection. Only after they are wed does Rossalyn learn that her father has lied to Malcolm, telling him that she is a virgin instead of her actual state of widow with a small daughter. Worse, Laird Gordon intends to keep the little girl with him. Rossalyn finds a way to smuggle her daughter into her wagon and keeps Mairi hidden until just before they arrive at Castle Sullivan. Malcolm is furious with Rossalyn to find that she lied to him. The rest of the story tells how Malcolm finds that his wife and her daughter are just what he needed. There are complications - Malcolm's childhood friend Fiona believes he has broken a betrothal to her and creates trouble for Rossalyn. Laird Gordon shows how treacherous he is. These add suspense to the story and are move the plot along.

The second story in the collection His by Christmas, continues the saga of Clan Sullivan, with focus on Fiona who caused so much mischief in the earlier story, finding out and coming to terms with the fact that she really does not love Malcolm. She is shocked to find that Cam, who is the third part of her childhood group, loves her and that she is attracted to him. While Fiona resists the attraction to Cam, all it takes is for him to be seriously injured defending the Clan from raiders for her to realize her true feelings, but she may be too late.

There is still a bit of a mystery at the end of the anthology - who are the attackers? Is this more treachery from Laird Gordon or something else? You can be sure I will be looking forward to the next book by Madelyn Hill.

Two lovely romances

A Scottish girl who had grown up with the laird and was in love with him, was very resentful when he brought back a wife when he made an alliance with her beast of a father. Another close friend, Cam had been in love with her forever. It was cute the way he wooed her. A very good pair of books.

Another DNF, at 7%. This is what I get for kindle freebies! The moment the girl thinks that, even though she was told moments before the wedding she was being married off, since he's good-looking it's okay? I gagged! Lmao. On to the next.

Lovely stories

I enjoyed the 2 stories but am dismayed at the lack of finishing the story about the attackers. Also, the use of the word ‘ken’ is fine but overuse of it became aggravating. Still I enjoyed this book. I assume the stories continue in later books in the series.

Two quick, fun holiday reads

Two fun short stories about a clan laird that comes home with a bride from a not so favorable neighboring clan and her acceptance into the hearts and minds of his people. Secondly about the woman who feels she was jilted and her finding love with the lairds second in command.

Both very good stories and set up nicely for sequels.

I have read several books by this author by now, having committed to them at one of my favorite book review sites without knowing much about her or her writing style. I just liked the time periods and places that she wrote about. I wish I had done a little more investigation before committing to the books. This particular collection has two stories that are interrelated, both novella length. Unfortunately, there was too much story to fit in novella-length writing for both stories, so the author cut corners. Not enough of the background was explained to set the world up and to really get what the stories were meant to be about. That can definitely be a problem in novellas. It seems like authors either information dump or withhold crucial information that helps with the enjoyment of the story. I also felt that the first novella, in particular, was melodramatic. Perhaps it would not have felt that way if enough backstory were given. I found some language to be off-putting and a bit crude. I also don't feel like the author I did enough research to know what Christmas would have been like in Scotland at that time. Trust me, it is far different from what the author has lined out in this book: most likely no celebrations at all because of the proclamations of the post-Reformation Scottish church, and certainly Christmas trees wouldn’t have been around, as those didn't even get to Great Britain until the 1830s and weren't popular until Prince Albert made them so. As I stated, the two stories are interrelated, but some plot threads were left hanging at the end of the second book, like who the attackers are and what's to happen with Clan Gordon. I also found the writing style to be a bit tedious. I don't think I'll be reading any more books by this author.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Edinburgh, 1893

Sarah Gilchrist has no intention of marrying her dull fiancé Miles, the man her family hope will restore her reputation and put an end to her dreams of becoming a doctor.

Scottish Highlands, 1710

Malcolm Sutherland is set to wed his betrothed, Lady Rossalyn Gordon. Their wedding is supposed to strengthen the alliance between the two families and provide food for Malcolm’s clan. His people depend on the alliance and it’s Malcolm's duty to provide for and protect them.

While this unexpected marriage might seem preposterous to Lady Rossalyn, she can’t wait to get away from her father, Laird Gordon, whom she’d deemed as evil after he murdered her first husband. To make matters worse, Rossalyn’s father does not want her to leave with her daughter, Mairi.

An engaging, historical romance story. Well-developed characters, follow their journey to a happily ever.

Finding Love at Christmastide

Christmas in the Highlands by Madelyn Hill consists of two novellas that both take place during the Christmas season of 1710 in the Scottish Highlands.

The first story features how Laird Malcolm Sutherland meets and marries the Lady Rosalyn Gordon under suspicious and dishonest circumstances. The second story continues the first and features the lairds man-of-arms, Cameron Munro and feisty Fiona of the Sutherland Keep.

This two story set is well written with interesting and well developed characters. Both Malcolm and Cameron were sigh-worthy heroes, and both Rosalyn and Fiona were strong heroines. I enjoyed each of their stories and I appreciated that the author carefully maintained the dialogue of the period and locale.

Content alert: This two part book contains some period and regional swearing, as well as two moderately described sexually intimate scenes.
