East Wind: A deaf mute with secrets to reveal...from the grave

Rate this book
It’s winter on the North Norfolk coast and the discovery of a girl’s body links a group of people who have had some connection with her, either intimately or through fleeting acquaintance. Among them is a ‘boy soldier’ escaping from a civil war in Africa, the son of a Hungarian émigré and his quest to unlock a family secret, and a hotel waiter who befriends an elderly expat.
Underpinning the novel’s theme are two love stories, one depicting through a series of letters the ecstasy and then the anguish at the ending of an affair.
Set in the late 1990s, East Wind is both a description of erosion along the East Coast of England and a metaphor for the frailty of relationships and loss of innocence and trust.

Caution: Features explicit sexual descriptions and acts of violence.
This book is a work of fiction and any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental.

Well I have to say that this book was rather odd. Firstly I read it on Kindle and it wasn't formatted properly. Secondly, despite ostensibly being about a murder investigation of a young deaf girl it spent a large part of the time focusing on the lives of several seemingly unrelated characters. It's a very interesting premise-in the end it does all start to make sense but it felt very disjointed. I think if the author had created more of a cohesive flow with a longer story it would have worked much better and been more enjoyable to read. I did very much like the idea of the police investigation being in the background- an original idea but I'm not sure the author pulled it off

An intriguing and unusual story following characters with a possible motive to kill. I didn’t anticipate the conclusion which was very refreshing.

I was asked to read and review this book by a friend. The author is known to my friend, so I knew I had to read this book. What I thought was a good synopsis but wasn't what I expected the book to be about.

It took me a while to get into the story due to the style of the writing. I felt like the characters was all over the place, not knowing who is who as well as what they have to do with the story. Very confusing. We only found out who Mary was near the end of the story.

I found there was some spelling mistakes, the grammar wasn't completely following how I thought the story was going. Would I read this author's other books, depending on the stories I think I would.

PLEASE NOTE:
I HAVE NOT WRITTEN ANY SPOILERS...

I feel that this is a good 'holiday' book, or a good 'long-haul flight' book. I was hoping for a stronger link between the characters and the main protagonist. I feel that there were too many characters and I found it a little difficult to try and remember each one. Each 'entry' showed a glimpse of the characters and it was not over-written and thus kept short, which I personally like. The story slowly reveals each character and their link to the main person, however it is felt that the link with each other could have been made sooner and made a little stronger. I did enjoy the ending and I feel that Chris Ash did the story justice at the end.
