" Dear Mr Murdoch,
You might recall me writing..."

Emily Tate is fourteen years old and yearns to become a business tycoon. Her problem is that she lives on a remote island over-run by seals, albatrosses and her own eccentric family - who pulp seaweed for a living and refuse to listen to any kind of business advice, let alone hers. So she keeps writing to Rupert Murdoch asking to be adopted.

But when Emily unexpectedly finds herself in control of the family firm she discovers that life as a kelp magnate has a serious downside.

Look I make no excuses for loving this book despite the fact it's built on the twin pillars of loving your second cousin and also loving capitalism. I think I got Kelp for free as a pre-teen and reread it CONSTANTLY, so picking it up today has been more of an exercise in remembering it because I seem to still know this ridiculous story off by heart. The characters are funny and vivid and it's got some brilliant comedy details in amongst the admittedly weird set-up.

I dunno if I'd recommend this book, but it's embedded deep in my psyche and I'm okay with that.

If I could, I would seriously burn this book into the fiery pits of hell. THis books was about an extremely eccentric girl who lived in a seawood factory and wait for it... HAD A CRUSH/FELL IN LOVE with her uncle. HER UNCLE. And I had to read this for English and relate to this entirely chewed up, crazy girl. I'm not sure... maybe I would've gone eccentric living in a seaweed factory..

If you're a fan of Morris Gleitzman and Paul Jennings, you're sure to love this funny book. A misfit 14 year old lives with her kelp gathering extended family on an island. She thinks she is the only sane one - until a distant relative turns up to claim an inheritance.

I didn't like this book. Only got as far as her teen thoughts about foreign cousin. I don't enjoy overt teen stories.

It was quite easy to read but I didn't like the whole loving your godfather/uncle thing. Barely finished it because of that.

Great light read about Emily and her eccentric extended family, harvesting seaweed on their own island.
