A (very) short story set 25 years after the book Kat, Incorrigible. Now a full-grown woman, Kat is used to directing and defeating powerful magic-users of all descriptions...but managing her own wild and magical children may prove to be her most difficult mission yet!
this short story does NOT stand alone. It is intended as a gift for readers of the Kat, Incorrigible trilogy and its followup YA novella, Courting Magic.
I grew up in America, but now I live in Wales with my husband, fellow writer Patrick Samphire, our two sons, and our sweet (and extremely vocal) tabby cat, Pebbles. I write fantasy rom-coms for adults (most recently Claws and Contrivances and Good Neighbors) and fun MG fantasy adventure novels, too (most recently The Raven Crown duology). My next series will be the adult romantasy trilogy The Queens of Villainy, published by Tor Bramble, starting in 2025 with Wooing the Witch Queen.
To join my Dragons' Book Club and get early copies of every ebook that I put out myself (so, all of my novellas, short story ebooks, etc!), check out my Patreon page, where I also published a series of fantasy rom-coms (Good Neighbors) across 2020-2021.
I only rate and review the books that I like, which is why all of my ratings are 4 or 5 stars.
A short-short story about Kat all grown up and dealing with children of her own! This was so much fun to write - I hope you guys enjoy it.
I've posted it online to read for free on my website, and it's also available as a free ebook at most major retailers. You can read the story and find all the links to the free ebooks on my blog: http://www.stephanieburgis.com/2016/1...
Happy December!
ETA (in January): Huzzah! Amazon.com is finally offering this for free, too. I hope the other Amazons around the world will follow suit soon!
This was a tiny slice of Kat's life as an adult with Alexander and their children, but so very, very short that it almost wasn't a story at all, which was both tantalising and frustrating. I did find it utterly charming and of course now I want to read more!
Another very short story about Kat. This time she's a mother of three incorrigible children of her own. It was a little scary to see Kat sympathize with Stepmama! Kat's eldest daughter sounds like Angeline and her younger daughter is much like her with more intense powers. Imagine what an eight-year-old Kat would have been like! :shudders: I wanted more to the story though and I feel like I'm missing out on Kat's magical battles.
A very short story of Kat in the future - running the magical order and trying to raise a houseful of children. I loved it, but it was so short, just one small slice, and the part of me that wanted more stories of Kat was disappointed it wasn't longer. Oh well. It was better than no story.
This quick glimpse of the magical girl heroine all powerful and grown up dealing with the mundane, everyday struggles of parenthood was the perfect conclusion to this series.
It's very cute but really a 5 minute read at the most. Nice little coda to Courting Magic, but would have been a better included final chapter to Courting Magic...
In which Kat has to deal with 3 children who remind her, unfortunately, of her own self and sisters growing up.
This short story hearkens back to the oft asserted parental karma--"If God is merciful, you'll have children just as [fill in (usually) negative attribute here] as you are." I love Kat and her adventures and it was fun to peek into her life as an adult, still working as a Guardia and also raising rambunctious and magical children.
I was a grown woman and the Head of the ancient Order of the Guardians. Tonight, I'd foiled an entire band of rogue witches in Northumberland, and I hadn't lost my composure for an instant.
Surely I could face down my own eight-year-old daughter just as calmly.
I absolutely love this very short story. If follows up Stephanie Burgis's wonderful middle grade series, Kat, Incorrigible, but it is set when Kat has grown up, got married, and had children of her own. It's utterly charming and fun. (And ebook is free via Stephanie Burgis's website, so what have you got to lose?)
Set 12 years after the end of the "Kat" books, this shows a little slice of domestic life for Kat and her family and the challenges and joys that come from raising a (magical) family. Not a lot of substance but worth the read for fans of the series.
Very short, but very cute. You really need to have read the other Kat, Incorrigible books for it to mean anything though. A nice epilogue to the trilogy about a grown-up Kat.
My favorite thing about Stephanie Burgis's stories is the way she writes families, even in stories as short as this one. Kat's kids were so much fun, and I can tell Olivia's more of a handful than Kat ever was! Would loooooooove a series about her, Clarissa and baby Alexander!
