The living water means inspiration. The word inspiration comes from the Latin "Spiro," meaning I breathe into. We breathe air without effort, likewise we must let the Divine Light or creative essence of God flow through our intellect without tension. The subjective mind in us perceives by intuition. It does not have to reason or inquire as it is all-wise, infinite intelligence.
(Arabic: جوزيف ميرفي) Joseph Murphy was a Divine Science minister and author.
Murphy was born in Ireland, the son of a private boy's school headmaster and raised a Roman Catholic. He studied for the priesthood and joined the Jesuits. In his twenties, an experience with healing prayer led him to leave the Jesuits and move to the United States, where he became a pharmacist in New York (having a degree in chemistry by that time). Here he attended the Church of the Healing Christ (part of the Church of Divine Science), where Emmet Fox had become minister in 1931.
In the mid 1940s, he moved to Los Angeles, where he met Religious Science founder Ernest Holmes, and was ordained into Religious Science by Holmes in 1946, thereafter teaching at the Institute of Religious Science. A meeting with Divine Science Association president Erwin Gregg led to him being reordained into Divine Science, and he became the minister of the Los Angeles Divine Science Church in 1949, which he built into one of the largest New Thought congregations in the country. In the next decade, Murphy married, earned a PhD in psychology from the University of Southern California and started writing. After his first wife died in 1976, he remarried to a fellow Divine Science minister who was his longstanding secretary. He died in 1981.
This book and others like it have transformed my thinking and my life as a result of the application of its principles. I have gone, literally, from a severely depressed & suicidal young woman (mis-educated by a particular religious sect/cult) to a middle-aged woman who carries a peace & joy within that truly surpasses all understanding. I would recommend ALL of Dr. Joseph Murphy 's books to every person breathing who struggles with understanding who they are, why they are, & how to be, do & have that which they desire in life.
I have read many books on this subject, it is the Best. It leads you to put the information into practice. The Truth of it all is what I have been searching for all my life. The Truth. Unfiltered and useable in life. Thank you for making it available.
There are a few paragraphs with some inspiring content and a good description of meditation at the end. See my Kindle Notes and Highlights for commented excerpts.
Important aspects to consider:
1) 98% of the book is about what God and Jesus said, with way too many citations from the bible. There is little or no direct connection between the citations and the point in question: metaphysics. If such a connection was clear in the author's head, he certainly lacked clarity and cadence to convey his point. Yes, there is metaphysics behind the concept of changing reality through the mind power, intuition, meditation, prayer, and so on. I know that. You may know that. But not everybody has grasped that idea yet. And the author doesn't make the connection explicit.
2) The writing style is boring and unpleasant to read. The book's copyright date from 1945, but JMW Group. Inc states it's been updated and edited for the 21st century. I disagree. The writing style dates from the early 20th century, the author uses too many old English words ("findeth", "getteth", "Thou knowest", quoting them from the bible). Yes, I can understand it, but it breaks the natural flow and becomes tiring, especially because of the excess of it.
3) There are many errors in the book, such as "educational education" in chapter 20, as if it hasn't passed under the eyes of a capable editor. Plus, many hyphenated words that shouldn't be: "ex-ample", "under-standing", "sup-posed", "in-formation", etc. This is probably a poor formatting job for the digital copy. The paragraphs are loosely arranged, the font size is not consistent.
4) The last section, About Joseph Murphy, is too lengthy (it takes about 8% of the whole book!), which is unnecessary and boring since the book is not about the author's biography.
5) And finally, the title is somewhat deceiving, or simply not well thought of, as the majority of the content is based on citations from the bible and on the orthodox idea of God with very few objective and clarifying explanations about such messages. Therefore it's far from being a "metaphysical demonstration". The title is what attracted me to the book in the first place. Then, the author, who has been so well regarded in the self-help field, even though I had not read any of his books until this one. To me, this book was an unfortunate reading choice and it totally killed my desire of reading any of the other Murphy's books.
Nevertheless, I finished reading this book because I was looking for more direct reference to metaphysics. At the mark of 92% of the book, there are two paragraphs that slightly describe a metaphysical understanding of existence. And that's it!
I have known of Joseph Murphy for years with his work in the area of the subconscious mind. I recently stumbled upon this work and was taken back with the wisdom coming through on this grander topic ! So much truth oozing out of each chapter. Very powerful. Must read again!
Joseph Murphy is a true mystic and great teacher. His ability to teach metaphysical principal in simple, direct fashion is brilliant. If you are on a spiritual path the information in this book can guide you home.
This is Dr. Joseph Murphy's first book. It's short but powerful book on metaphysics. It is powerful and has the capacity to change one's life if they commit to practicing the principles contained within.
This is such a powerful and potent book. I can feel tremendous inner shifts trading place with every word and letter. I will be reading this everyday and plan to transcribe it by hand as its contents become more and more stabilized within my awareness of being.
