Plague
A demonically driven, bioengineered terror is about to be unleashed and only Adam Dekker stands in the way.
It begins innocently enough with a short holiday on the Caribbean island of Dominica, but the idyllic setting is soon shattered. Dekker and Hannah Ahmed, the beautiful SIS agent, become entangled in an international conspiracy that propels them through a series of heart-stopping and life-threatening encounters.
The unholy creatures, resembling large locusts, are created in a remote island laboratory. But unlike normal locusts these creatures eat the flesh of their victims. The laboratory’s head of security steals the seed broods, escapes the island, and sells the locusts to a terror group intent on overrunning Europe and the world.
The engineered locusts are a perfect terror weapon, ideal to eliminate the entire United States leadership in one massive strike and keep America from interfering with the fulfillment of a jihadi prophesy. The terrorists need only breed a sufficient number of the flesh-eating locusts to create a swarm, and then release it during a special joint session of Congress.
This is Dekker’s most difficult challenge yet, one that will require all his skills to stop a plague from forever changing the world.

Bioengineered flesh eating locusts and Islamic terrorists made for good antagonists but the mystical twist of supernatural thrown in makes Adam Dekker unstoppable. This was a quick, fun read- perfect for tbe beach. I wish Hannah was a little more kick ass and less in need of rescue. I had not read the other books that came first in the series and I was able to pick up on what was going on easily.

I have not read the other Adam Dekker books, so I can’t review this in terms of the full series. With that said, the story in this particular book is fast-paced with a good mix of action, international intrigue and a touch of the supernatural.
I didn’t find issue with the writing style as much as other reviewers here seem to have. Its short, clear writing gives it more of an action feel, which is exactly what this story is.
Now, being a female, in the beginning I was somewhat disappointed in the fact that Adam was always saving Hannah, although she is a trained agent herself. But toward the end, the author seemed to give her a little more backbone, but she could be an even stronger female character.
Although I appreciate the timeliness of the politics in this story, I do worry that this puts Muslims and immigration in a negative light. Of course, the author has a right to his opinions, but coming from the other side of these politics, I didn’t appreciate that aspect of the story. He did focus on the extreme side of the religion as the terrorists but there was mixing in of the immigration message. For me, that didn’t work, but that’s a personal political thing, not any fault of the writing.
Also, I like characters and even settings with a mix of good and bad qualities. This was all good vs. all bad. People and countries/regions have a little both good and bad, so I would like to see a little bit more depth from that perspective.
Still, it was an enjoyable read about mutant locusts out to bring about a new world order. So it is entertaining. For a fun read on a plane, this would be a good one to pick up.

August 4, 2019I hadn’t read any other books by this author when I decided to read Plague. I think this was a mistake as the characters refer to past events and I wish I had read these books in order as I have been left with several puzzling questions. After saying that; I did find the concept of the genetically engineered insects interesting. The book moves swiftly from scene to scene, often without chapter break, and although this is a bit disorientating it does add a sense of the speed of events. I won’t give away too much of the plot but I do intend to go back and read earlier books in this series as the characters are intriguing and well rounded even though the plot is, at times, predictable and some of the research is suspect (in particular the British ‘Secret’ Intelligence Agent who is happy to divulge who she is working for to anyone who asks). This book is worth reading but my advice is to read the earlier books first.

Couldn't finish
Plague wasn't really my type of story. I believe I could have gotten into it anyway if not for the many problems with the writing itself.
This book would, in my opinion, be more suited to a younger (teen/pre-teen) audience. Maybe I'm just too old for mutant locusts.
