Recounts the experiences of abandoned, orphaned, or homeless children from city orphanages in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries who were sent out by the trainload to find families that would adopt them or take them as workers.
This was a quick one but a good way to introduce the topic to elementary age students. It had plenty of photos to capture the imagination and references for more in-depth reading.
This introduction to the orphan trains shares snippets of stories of children who actually rode the trains. There are also wonderful photos which help to tell the story. I liked how the author gave suggestions for further projects so students could learn more. A good companion to THE TRAIN TO SOMEWHERE by Eve Bunting.
Book on immigrants, orphans, orphanages and the orphan trains. It is a good introduction for elementary aged students, with lots of pictures to help explain the text. But probably not detailed enough to give the whole experience justice.
