Tom Hubbard found a job in a kitchen in a grand house in London in 1666. His mother is relieved knowing her son won’t go hungry and has somewhere to live. Tom’s life is hard. He’s up at 5:00 and often works to ten at night. Pip, the kitchen dog, is his best friend.
In a moment of luck, he’s in the room when the master comes in, spots the boy, and says he needs a pageboy. Tom can’t believe his luck, he’s not in trouble, he’s got a better job.
A maid wakes the household at 3:00 a.m. on Sunday, the 2nd of September, saying she can see a fire. The master sends everyone back to bed, but the fire has spread by the time the household is up, and the master must tell the King.
What does Tom see running with his master to the King? What does the Great Fire of London destroy?
I enjoyed the mix of fiction and fact.
