***This is a newsletter subscriber only short story, set before Blood Bound***
Shaun Gallows' secret relationship with black witch Pen Whitelaw is seriously messed up. He knows he needs to find a real connection with her if they're going to stay together, and one summer's night is going to be make or break.
I'm the twisted mind behind The Gallows Novels and the After Death Series. If you want to know a bit about me, here it is: I spend too much time indoors and probably watch too many horror films. Some of my favourite things are; Alone time, people who know when to shut up, having a drink, eating pizza (usually after having too much drink the night before), reading books, adult swim cartoons, bad horror and sci-fi movies, proper good TV shows like Dexter & The Walking Dead, and last but not least having a laugh with my hilarious other half - this would usually include some of the above.
A newsletter special short story about Shaun, this short takes you back in time and lets you in on some things that happened between Shaun and Penn. Even if you haven't read any of the Gallows series yet, it gives you some insight on things you will read about in the books that are based on a later time. I am looking forward to more of these newsletter specials, and hoping for some insight on Shaun's scars.
I loved getting to see what really happened between Pen and Shaun. It's one thing to have it mentioned in the story, but a complete other to actually read the whole occurrence. It makes understanding how and why each is the way they are. I love this quick read as they provide much needed insight into the character's make-up. I volunteered to read this book.
This short story takes place immediately after the vampire stakings in “Double Dare”, as Shaun finishes with the clean-up, and ferrying the human girls back home. This story shifts its focus from Sarah to Shaun, and contrasts the personalities of the two twins. We learn that Shaun hates being a vampire hunter (unlike Sarah), but that is what most attracts his ‘girlfriend’, the black witch Pen, to him. Instead of heading to his own home to write a report on the night’s events, Shaun spends the rest of the night with Pen (cue more rampant sex), but is clearly unsure about his relationship with her. Later in the story, his misgivings are proven founded. Once home, he settles down to report writing – tidying up the sparse notes left by Sarah. He may not enjoy his work, but he comes across as way more conscientious than his sister. He pays attention to what he is doing, whereas Sarah is only interested in the action and the kills. Admin is not her forte. Soon they are both called out to another job. Sarah approaches it with excitement, Shaun with resignation: “Nothing like the smell of death in the late afternoon to make you wish you didn’t know undead creatures of the night existed”. Unlike Buffy’s world, where staked vampires turn to a light sprinkling of dust, these dead vampires make a huge mess. Sarah is “so much better at avoiding gunk showers” than Shaun – another reason why he finds the job so onerous. Shaun comes across as a much more sympathetic character, than Sarah, the “Warrior Barbie”, but it is clear that both personalities are essential to the story line and the job – a bit like Sam (serious) and Dean (hedonist) Winchester. I look forward to more stories involving the twins. I received this copy from the author in exchange for an honest review
'False Front' was a good read that gave me a peek into how Shaun truly feels about his life, job and his messed up relationship. Pen is definitely a selfish bitch. I really want to slap her silly, but then she would probably curse me for eternity. A good look into what I'm getting myself into with the 'Gallows Series'.
a novella that explains Pen and Shaun's relationship. this book is definitely a filler type novella just to give background information on Shaun's reaction to Pen and why he behaves the way he does.
