Murder, madness and military secrets - the Cold War is over, and things are about to get very hot...Bodies are turning up in Siberia, some mutilated, some half-eaten. Has the spectre of cannibalism reared its ugly head again in Russia, or is a bizarre cult at work? For George Lazin, a colonel in Russia's Federal Security Service sent to investigate the robbing of a Siberian diamond train, the question soon becomes a matter of life and death - not just for him but for Russia itself. An epic, thrilling sweep through past, present and future in which the echoes of the Cold War are to be heard amid the din of modern Russia as it collapses into anarchy.
Since 2008 his books are published as James Jackson.
James Jackson has a postgraduate degree in Military Studies and is a consultant in military risk. He is the author of The Counter-Terrorist Handbook and lives in London.
A post cold war thriller, sort of a spy thriller, sort of a detective story, almost a Tom Clancy style thriller. Paints a vision of Russia post USSR breakup where the Russian Mafia and the ex-security services vie for control.
I enjoyed reading it, although what is effectively a short story in the final chapter is more interesting and I found to be a more interesting story than the proceeding hundreds of pages!
Sadly i did not finish this book. I read a good chunk and enjoyed the character descriptions then after a few pages it was another character kr they were killed. Found it hard going and decided to stop , not something i do lightly but this book was maybe the wrong time for me to read it
I started to read this book and just couldn't get into it. There were too many characters to keep track of and the plot line kept going back and forth. I guess it was just not my type of book.
