A dog-sitting favor for a friend takes a terrifying twist when the police-dog-in-training runs off and leads Alexis Thompson into the middle of a drug drop. Only the quick thinking of a passing stranger gets them both out alive. Veterinarian Nick Kendrick, who's running for mayor, knows the race for survival is just beginning. As moving targets, he and Alexis must work together to learn the identity of the drug ring's murderous mastermind. But having killers on their tail isn't the only problem they face. Alexis's past as a disbarred lawyer could jeopardize Nick's political future. Only by putting their dreams and their safety on the line can they eliminate the threat to their town, and find a way forward together...
Gasp! A heroine who doesn't like dogs?! With a hero who loves animals so much that he's a veterinarian? This pair is doomed right from their eventful first meeting. Luckily Raven the black lab has their back. :-) And they will need all her matchmaking skills as well as her finely tuned canine nose to help them reach their happily ever after.
Thrilling action, a puzzling mystery to solve and the relentless threat of danger kept me frantically turning pages. So did Raven's gentle human whispering until romance -- albeit reluctantly -- blossoms between Alexis and Nick. Romantic suspense at its finest. Blissful sigh.
I don't think I've read this author previously. I think she does suspense/mystery tolerably well, but if you think about it, the romance is rushed from meeting to getting engaged (only a few months if I'm reading this right). Now, don't get me wrong. I'm glad Nick was there to help Alexis out, and I can see a dating relationship developing out of this--but it's the engagement at the end of the book that's bothersome to me.
I did like the dog, Raven, though yes, she does seem a little untrained, especially in the hands of a novice like Alexis, who doesn't even like dogs. So, let's throw her together with the veterinarian (Nick)for a bit more of a plot twist.
Did Alexis do the right thing by breaking attorney-client privilege to report a murderer? The State of Washington says no. I'm not sure if the murderer expected attorney-client privilege in that scenario though--we only hear about it second-hand in this book so there's no way to know. It does seem that the censure has affected Alexis to the point that she feels she's ruined her father's political aspirations as well as her own career. I'm glad to see that it didn't really matter to the townspeople who knew her nor did it seem to matter to Nick.
I'm sure the police were upset at losing a drug detection dog--though it seems Nick may have applied for some funds for a K9 late in the book. I'm glad Raven got to become a therapy dog--and I'm glad Alexis got over her fear of dogs.
Don't you just love Heather's books? This book is well written, action packed, and fast paced, you are going to love it. It is also has Heather's faith woven through it like a tapestry. It's awesome. Disbarred Attorney Alexis Thompson works as a temp in her friends business. Her friend left town on a trip with her boyfriend. Alexis was asked to watch a dog that is a police dog-in-training. She takes the dog for a walk but the dog takes off. The vet is out running and takes off to the rescue the girl and the dog. The dog finds a stash of drugs. They are now marked for destruction. Veterinarian Nick Kendrick is out running when he sees a young woman walking a dog. She has it on a break-a-way collar and the dog takes off. He run to help the woman. He finds the dog at the mayor's home but the dog had found a bag of drugs in the drain pipe. Nick was the only one who saw the drugs before a man shows up. Both Alexis and Nick takes off after the dog as shots are fired. The Chief of Police refuses to believe him as he is running against the mayor in the upcoming election. A constant struggle to stay in front of these drug smugglers and alive. God has a plan for these two; a plan for a hope and a future. God has a plan for you too; a good plan and not of evil. Trust God and let go of your will. He will turn your life around.
Talk about being on the edge of your seat throughout most of the book. The suspense, whodunit, bullets running rampant, arson fire, car chase, tampered brakes, an in training drug sniffing K-9, plus two strong and interesting main characters, will keep your heart pounding and wanting to know what’s going to happen next. The main characters, Nick Kendrick, a veterinarian and currently running for major in his new hometown, and Alexis Thompson, a lawyer who was disbarred and has returned home to figure out what to do next , end up helping each other and in the process, come to respect and admire each other. The addition of some Christian influence and the romance make this one a great read for anyone who enjoys action, romance, strong characters and a good plot. Once again, Ms Woodhaven displays her talent as an author. I was gifted this copy of the book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
Despite a few lulls, there are enough twists and surprises to keep the reader engaged. The suspense angle is a much larger focus than the romance. The scenarios are realistic. While this is not as action-packed as previous books, it is still an enjoyable read.
Alexis Thompson and local vet Nick Kendrick accidentally stumble upon a drug ring while chasing a runaway dog. As a result, they find themselves the targets of cartel members set on keeping them quiet. Alexis fears that her disgraced past could have a negative impact on Nick’s mayoral aspirations. How will he respond when he learns the truth about who she is? And will they live long enough to discover who is behind the drug trade in town? (LOVE INSPIRED SUSPENSE, Jul., 224 pp., $5.99)
