Rate this book
A lyrical, heartfelt picture book celebrating the love between parents and their children.

When a new baby comes into the world, that baby becomes everything cuddly, everything kisses, everything love...everything possible. In other words, everything that matters. And the world is never quite the same again. In Everything You, Elizabeth McPike's simple, poetic text and Jay Fleck's modern graphic and adorable illustrations capture the wonder and love a child brings to our lives.

This is such a sweet, adorable book to read to babies & toddlers - or older kids if you want to remind them how much they are loved with a book.

It is not really a story, but cute illustrations of animal families with their babies, each page with a loving phrase about how important the baby is in their lives.

Lovely! Kids enjoyed it and said it was very cute.

Everything You by Elizabeth McPike, illustrated by Jay Fleck. PICTURE BOOK. Farrar, Straus and Girouz, 2017. $17. 9780374301415

BUYING ADVISORY: Pre-K, EL (K-3)- OPTIONAL

AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

Everything You takes on a fun approach into how much a parent loves his/her child. “You’re everything HOPEFUL. You’re everything FRESH. You’re everything GENTLE” The adjectives on each page are typed in all caps. This book could be used for a unit on parts of speech. A new edition could be written and illustrated by each student having them fill in the blanks with adjectives to describe themselves.

There is one thing that this book has going for it-the illustrations! The parent/child illustrations are so tender and lovable. The colors are unique and fun. The plot concept is sweet yet we felt that the execution wasn’t met. We simply felt like some of the rhyming was a stretch in order keep it a rhyming book.

Anticipating a new arrival is always exciting, and in this text, several different animal parents eagerly await their offspring. The picture book uses rhyming lines for its text and features the same parents on the opening and the closing pages, before and after their little one has hatched. In between, readers will see other animals, including an elephant, a panda, and a whale, among others, enjoying time with their babies. The illustrations and text capture the feeling of anticipation and joy new parents experience, guaranteeing that the picture book will be shared with some of those new arrivals--over and over again. It will be hard to tell whether it will be the parents or the child who will get the most pleasure from the book or from their relationship. The book title makes it clear that after a child is born, it's all about that child from then on.

A nice book to give as a gift for a new baby. Not a new concept, and I can definitely see the parents getting tired of it - I felt it was a bit long. Very sweet though.

A lovingly tender book about animal parents celebrating the "you-ness" of their little ones. It really is a precious book. And I think that little one will get it and like it.

The illustrations are adorable! I love all of the parents and their babies. The message was unclear, however, because many of the lines just...didn't make sense.

This book has adorable, bright, simple pictures and heartwarming text. I love how some of the pages can be made interactive, though I do wish there was a little bit more of this!

I appreciate the intent, but I'm not persuaded that they pulled it off. This book just seems like a jumble.

Ideal for new parents and their new additions to the family, this board book follows various animals as they celebrate the joy of a new child. Not only are babies adorable, fun to hug and spend time with, but they also represent hope for the future and all sorts of possibilities about what they can do and become and how their very presence changes the world. Colorful images and simple text make this one easy to share repeated times. It would be hard to hear this affirming and empowering message without feeling good about oneself.

Love the vibrant illustrations. Love the warmth of parental love. With a rhythmic cadence and rhyming text, little ones will rock their delight!

"We wait and we wait,
we watch all day through,
and our dreams while we wait
are of everything you."
