A world within a world - a world within our world. In Shifters, the first book of The Jade Forest Chronicles, trouble is brewing within 'In Caelum' between the preternatural creatures who live in the secret reservation within the world of humans. Amber Vale is a young and beautiful fae, and with her sharp wits and keen intelligence she is chosen to be the arbitrator over a land dispute - a cemetery imbued with enormous magical power. Little does she know that this won't just be another job, or that another power will come into play here: the power of attraction.
When she meets the strong, handsome and masculine werewolf Balfour, he is just as unprepared as she is for the intense desire and raw emotion that blossoms immediately between them. As the turmoil unfolds and grows, with witches and werewolves battling for supremacy in a conflict that looks like could become an all-out war, Balfour and Amber find themselves torn between their loyalties - Balfour to his pack, of which he will become the alpha, and Amber to the laws of the fae - and their love for one another.
In this exciting, passion-filled paranormal romance, unexpected twists, betrayals, lies, passion and steaming hot romance will keep you turning pages from the first to the last, and you're guaranteed to develop an insatiable hunger for every book in The Jade Forest Chronicles.
Pretty good book. Had fae, werewolves, witches. Good amount of action and romance, although I could've done with more sex. The ending was unexpected. Interested in continuing to the next book.
3 stars- rounded up because of the writing did have some memorable points.
We got a story about Fae, werewolves and witches. About love between a wolf & a Fae woman.
I liked the werewolves. I even liked the witches. I liked the power the Fae had. (Fire balls are so badass)z
But I didn’t like their “we are not fighters, we keep to ourselves” thing they got going on. It didn’t sit right with me. And they seemed more human than Fae to me. More prey than predator. And that ruined the “all powerful, cruel and mysterious Fae picture I have”.
Read: 25/10/2020 1st rating: 3 stars Genre/tropes: Paranormal/Fae/witches/werewolf/magic/romance Cover: 3 stars POV’s: Dual - 1st person (Amber & Balfour) Will I recommend: No
It felt like the story ended just as it was getting to the interesting part. Fairies and werewolves, witches and humans. The witches and the werewolves both want burial ground that is full of power. The fairies just want to be left alone.
I downloaded Shifters as a free novella from Amazon. An excellent read. The author seemed to put a lot of thought into the world-building and the plot, which was inspired. I enjoyed the characters and the multiple conflicts. Well done, especially for the amount of information packed into a short story. I'll be interested to check out the next book of this series, as well as anything else by this writer as long as the pricing is reasonable.
In a place where supernaturals live within their own community, a community which is hidden within the human one, Amber Vale, a young fae woman and the daughter of a fae council member is chosen to arbitrate over a land dispute. The land is emanating, immense power and for some reason, the wolves have also taken an interest. Amber’s involvement in the case is only meant to be brief however the beta wolf that shows up on behalf of the wolves attracts her in a way no one else ever has. What makes matters more complicated for her is that fact that he can't help but focus his attentions on the intriguing fae he should be keeping his distance from.
I'm a sucker for inter supernatural relationships so this one already had that advantage. I liked amber, she had guts to stand up for what she thought was right even though the fae are more a powerful yet submissive (not sure that is the word I want but it's the best I have right now) race. I liked how she was more open minded and her strong personality came through though she could be timid. Balfour was a good old alpha male werewolf, even though he was the beta. A good character trying to do the right thing, while also trying to get what he wants, and hoping the two don't contradict.
It was good but the plot was a little week at times and I felt like it finished where it could have really gotten going. A lot more could have been done with this and I feel this is another book which just missed the mark. That said, I have to mention the cover artwork. It is beautiful and the reason I decided I would read and review the book. So all things considered, 7 out of 10
This is a short novella, clearly aimed at setting up a series. It is pleasantly written but very vanilla.
The two point of view protagonists obviously have to shag as soon as they meet before resolving a very simple mystery, and assembling a gang of friends that stands astride the boundaries in shifter society. Everything else ticks the usual paranormal boxes.
One interesting point is that the legal ownership of land, governed by human rules, is respected by the shifter community, and breaching those rules is cause for war. This unusual aspect gives depth and could make the series worth pursuing in due course.
The story was engaging and the world building piqued my interest, but overall it felt more like a taste of a book, than a full-fledged novel. Before I started to really get into it, it finished and left me hanging with too many questions. I also thought that there was too much romance for my taste and the love scenes were used more for entertainment than bringing anything to the story. The romance had a good enough explanation but I just felt like there was too much focus on it, considering the lenght of the book.
I felt as though it could use more depth. I wanted with each chapter to know more about what was going on. I usually want with most stories to continue when i learn there are more books but not this time even though it was it was left hanging. I guess I'm like the King in 1001 nights cant wait for the rest of the story but that was not the case here. I think it just needs more.
An interesting twist on the preternatural world interacting with humans. The humans are not appreciated by any of the other species, but accepted as they seem to keep the peace. Mostly the story is Fae and Werewolves. Power comes for the dead so a graveyard is prime pickings. The Witches and the Werewolves both want it. That's the storyline with some sex on the side between the Fae and Werewolf who are the prime characters in the story.
A just-okay prequel novella to the Jade Forest Chronicles series. Wasn't feeling the insta-chemistry between the were and the fae and too much time was spent at the beginning discussing some land that was up for grabs and why this group or that group should get their hands on it. Nothing really grabbed me enough to want to continue the series.
I love books I get caught up in. This book doesn't fail. Ms. Neas does a great job at world building, and her characters are solid, and real. This book gave me a taste. One is simply not enough. I'm working my way through her series.
Is it magic, list or love? Who know what is in store for the wolf and fae. Love the story line. It's a quick read but very captivating. Would have given more stars except I think it was too short.
Story started out with good plot and characters but was to over view like.. The sexy time was a wham bam 30 second thing which for the attraction that was supposed to be there was a let down. Book was ok...
The story never quite took off for me, and felt like lost potential. Characters never achieved depth, and the plot was weak. The story was saved by the world building and I think I could become interested in this world if it was populated by more interesting characters and less plot dissonance.
What a great surprise. Well wrote. I like the characters. They were well described. Look forward to next book. I like how many different species are included.
