277 עמודים הסיפורים בקובץ הזה הם מבחר מסיפוריו המוקדמים של צ`כוב שנכתבו לעיתונות היומית בשנת 1880-1888. הגיבורים והעלילות הנרקמות סביבם משקפים את החיים של האדם הרוסי בכל רובדי החברה וגווניה. בין הסיפורים השונים המרכיבים את הספר נמתח מעין קו דמיוני – בין הגעגועים למציאות הזויה, שהלב כמה להשיגה, ובין המציאות הריאלית הקשה. הדמויות המוצגות באמפתיה רבה, אינן מצליחות לחרוג מהוויית החיים שלהן, ולהגיע למימוש עצמי ויחסים ראויים עם עצמן והסביבה. הדקות שצ`כוב טווה בה את סיפוריו הופכת את הקריאה בהם לחוויה מענגת. בסיפורים שהם יצירת מופת בזעיר אנפין, נעות הדמויות מסביב לציר ההשפלה על גווניה השונים ומוצאות מנוס ממנה באמצעות שתייה אובססיבית. לספר נוספו הערות ואחרית דבר מאת עורך הסדרה `מן הקלאסיקה הרוסית`, פרופ` דימיטרי סגל מן האוניברסיטה העברית

Overall a nice collection of amusing stories, but not much more.
It does leave me with a desire to read Checkov's better known stories and plays.
It clear that he has a true talent of drawing a picture of different situations with highly relatable (even though I have not lived in Tzarist Russia of the 19th century). In addition he does it with just the right amount of humor and sarcasm, that leaves with half a smile and half a thought.
