Jas Harrington and the crew of the Galathea have made it back to Earth. Now they face an investigation into the Shadow attack on the ship and the infiltration of the colony world of Dawn.
They find that things have changed since they went away. Strange disappearances and odd behavior lead them to the question: have the Shadows invaded their home planet?
When the former navigator Sayen Lee investigates, she’s taken hostage. Can Jas get her back? And can they find out what’s been happening on Earth before more lives are lost?
J.J. Green is a British-Australian science fiction author with a lifelong love of distant landscapes, intriguing cultures and fascinating places. She was born within the sound of the bells of Mary-le-Bow church in Cheapside, London, making her a bona fide Cockney, and she lived in Australia, Laos and Taiwan before returning to the UK to settle down in Cambridge.
Green’s novels weave science-based speculation with richly personal stories. Her works explore themes of environmental degradation, political conflict, mythical resonance, human resilience, and the ethics of technology and expansion. Her characters—often strong women—navigate future worlds grounded in both scientific plausibility and mythic imagination.

This is Book 4 in the ‘Shadows of the Void’ series. Unlike Book 3 (Dawn), this would be an okay point to access the series. Whilst it would undoubtedly be better to start at the beginning (not least because you’ll miss some good stories if you don’t), Shadowrise does give a very useful summary in the first chapter that would allow you to orientate yourself in the story even if you hadn’t read the previous books.
Shadowrise is the first book to take place on Earth. It joins the story as the crew of the Galathea arrive home from their disastrous and disturbing mission. Are the Shadows now behind them? Has Dawn refugee Makey found somewhere he can be safe? Or have the Shadows found their way onto this planet too?
The pace of this instalment is fantastic. I was worried in the beginning that it might be a little uninspiring, probably due to the recapping in the first chapter that was a little unnecessary for someone who has read the previous three books in the space of just a week or so. However, I think it’s definitely a helpful section for those who have had more of a leisurely journey!
Once the story really gets going, there’s no end of action. I love the combination of intrigue, the way you start anticipating the next move, and the sometimes rather brutal combat action. It makes the book a very quick read because there never seems to be a moment when you don’t want to read the next page – there’s no good place to stop and put it down!
Shadowrise really focuses on the characters of Makey, Harrington, Carl, and Sayen. They turn into something of a formidable team even though they are very different people. I enjoyed the development of Sayen’s character as it has been limited up until this point in the series (probably due to the fact that she’s effectively been only a brain for quite some time!) In particular, the details of Carl, Harrington, and Sayen’s early lives (childhood and before the mission) come to light and this gives an added depth to the characters.
The book ends at a point that nearly made me hurl it across the room! NOOOOOO. You can’t stop there. You just can’t! Without giving any spoilers, it generated an intense frustration that a question asked close to the beginning has not been answered but promises to be in the future. Of course, this is good writing. I now need the next book…immediately.
Anyone with a liking for easy-read sci-fi with plenty of action and some mysteries to solve will not be disappointed with Shadowrise and the Shadows of the Void series as a whole. I will say, if you’ve read book 3 then you probably don’t need convincing to buy book 4. And if you’re reading this trying to decide whether to buy Shadowrise as a first book in the series, then I’d really suggest starting at the beginning with Generation. Whilst it’s possible to start here, I wouldn’t really recommend missing the start of the story.
the action shifts to earth were the Gattaca's former navigator becomes the main heroine, the pilot and safety officer play their parts as well, tragic things as confirmed and our heroes end the book on the run and the fight for earth has just begin, it still does not revile who the shadow on the Gattaca is. The kid from Dawn is around, being book four of ten we left with questions to take to the next book, how far is the shadows reach? will Dawn be shaved, will earth? the chose of a daemon enemy is a strange one for space opera were aliens or even humans are the norm. if you read the Gattaca three books read this one and the rest of the series. The series would make a grate mini-series on sy-fy or one of the streaming things, a group of movies would be grate
The story continues from Dawn and is just as exciting. Jas and Carl have landed on Earth and Sayen has been woken up from stasis.
Will Sayen need a cloned body or will her own be able to be healed?
Jas and Carl have been threatened by Acting Master Haggardy to tell his version of events that happened on Dawn but will they have the courage of their convictions to stand up to him and tell the truth of what really happened?
After the investigation of what happened on Dawn, Carl goes home to Australia to visit his parents but cannot find them.
Are there Shadows on Earth?
How will they tell who has been infected?
I’m going to keep reading this thrilling series to find out what happens next.
Author J.J. Green brings us Jas Harrington's next adventure. Following the events of the last book Dawn, the Galathea returns to Earth. Upon arriving at the Earth spacedock the ships former first officer threatens Jas and the pilot only because they wouldn't tell his version of the story about what happened with the ships original captain and the Shadows. Once Earth side the pilot goes home to visit his parents only to find them missing. That starts the everything that happens from there including the cloned navigator friend of their's being taken by the Shadows. This is a great book and I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
I'm starting to get into this series even more as I progress. This installment involves the return of Jas, Carl & Sayen to Earth and the trials & tribulations they encounter there. From the disappearance of Carl's parents to the abduction of Sayen Lee - and of course, her ultimate rescue - it's filled with action. Now, of course, we need to pursue the 'Shadows.'
Reading this in early 2021, I saw shades of US politics in the book (even though the book was written in 2018).
Carl was busy saying that Haggardy was retiring and so they should just “move on”. I agreed with Jas that you can’t just ignore past crimes. (That’s my view, anyway).
The crew has made it back to Earth and Sayen has a cloned body with her mind inserted. It’d be nice to be able to tweak a few body issues. They learn some more about the Shadows.
Makey is a great addition to the story. A more or less typical teenage boy escaping from the planet “Dawn” he is eager to learn all there is to know about Earth. The Shadows continue to make advances into our reality.
Back on Earth the question is whether Earth has been infiltrated or not. That is, only till Sayen Lee got abducted. Then all hell started breaking loose again Shadowrise is certainly packed again with a lot of suspense. Enjoy.
Book 4 of the "Shadows of the void Space Opera" What a read. I think, i have to admit, that i am sucked into the story. Why? I just bought the next book in the series "Underworld"
Finally arriving back on Earth, the crew of the Galatea dis embark and stand on Earth once more. Carl and Harrington had to go in front of a board of enquiry, which they hoped would charge Haggard for his role in the deaths of the ship's officers . Say en Lee had been held in stasis and now, also on Earth, she would have her knowledge, memories and personality into a new body. All should be good in the world for our young heroes. It wasn't long before they found out there were problems on Earth, most likely Shadow problems. Fantastic read, if you enjoy science fiction, you would love this series.
Back on earth the crew are grounded until the outcome of the investigation into what happened with the Shadows, but things don't go as planned. A real sense of intrigue in this book as the heroes travel the globe and the danger comes too close for comfort. It's not a long book but has lots going on and time flew by as I was quite engrossed in it. *This was an ARC, my opinions are my own.*
Starts quickly and rarely let's you stop for a breath. I really enjoyed the read. It's been a while since abook. Held my attention enough to read in one day! I was given my copy of the book by the author, but that doesn't affect the review
