Whither Deadpool?

Pigeonholing the Merc with the Mouth into a larger Marvel crossover event is always an interesting exercise in money grabbing, yet the normally comic tone of his character/books can be a welcome tonic to what is otherwise a leaden event (Hi, Civil War and Axis)

Here the storyline-at-large about somebody killing The Watcher and stealing his eyeballs is used to jump start a second-rate Deadpool plotline.

The recently married Deadpool has to do battle with Dracula’s vampire hordes for his missus. Vampires have a thing with bright lights; so who can he enlist to aid him – Dazzler, who converts sound to light and is proof that rock music and comics don’t mix. The present day Dazzler is really Mystique, so it’s back to the past to enlist ‘90’s Dazzler.

To muddy continuity, Deadpool has a daughter somewhere and he asks Agent Preston for help finding her.

Agent Preston, who’s actually a Life Model Decoy of the original, gets a dose of the Watcher’s eyeball truth and it’s game on.

After some slicing and dicing and rescuing and vivisecting, Deadpool is reunited with his daughter.

Deadpool’s going to have to work on the Daddy routine.

Bonus: Deadpool and Sabretooth beat up Canadians Alpha Flight in a ‘90’s throwback issue.

Bottom line: As Deadpool collections go, this one is firmly in the middle of the road. The art is second rate Mad Magazine fare and the plot is busy and not laden with the laffs until you get to the ‘90’s tribute issue, yet the poignancy bit kind of works with Deadpool. It humanizes him, without becoming too treacly.

Deadpool and his new wife Shiklah are forced to fend off the aggressive forces of Shiklah’s jilted lover, Dracula. While they are off making quick work of the vampire horde, Deadpool’s friend, S.H.I.E.L.D Agent Preston, discovers a terrible secret that threatens her relationship with Deadpool himself.

Look, I’ll be the first person to admit that while I enjoy comics, I'm not exactly current when it comes to big crossover storylines. This particular volume of Deadpool occurs within the time frame of the Marvel Comics event “Original Sin” and it left me feeling a little lost in the grand scheme of things as I didn’t quite understand what was going on. There’s also a weird wibbly, wobbly, timey, wimey thing going on involving an afroed Deadpool and a lesser known super heroine, Dazzler.

I don’t mean to be harsh, but the artwork in this volume was flat out terrible. Maybe I’m just not a fan of John Lucas, who knows. At times, it almost looked like it was bordering on John Kricfalusi territory, which is the wrong fit for superheroes (unless you’re talking Powdered Toast Man). I hope that they bring back Scott Koblish for the remainder of the series, his work has been excellent.

Volumes five and six haven’t been as strong as the first four and it has me worried in regards to the series going forward. Duggan and Posehn have proven to be excellent writers, so I hope they find their footing and get things back on track.

Deadpool past is revealed to Preston and she is now on the search for his daughter!

Deadpool starts off fairly average here with him hunting down vampires with the help of Dazzler. It's pretty funny at times, and brutal, but it's standard Deadpool fun nothing special. The real story is with Preston finding his daughter and trying to save her. Eventually, Deadpool hears of this and goes to save her as well, going up against Mr. Flagsmasher.

The latter half is a lot stronger with some excellent character moments. Deadpool works really well when he's protecting someone who cares about someone. We even have a surprise return of Evan! The one Deadpool saved in X-Force. I LOVED this part and really the whole last two or three issues. If only the first half was as strong. But overall one of the stronger volumes.

I'll round it from 3.5 to a 4.

"Words hit just as hard as fists, Adsit."

I didn't like the art style in this volume as much as in the previous ones, but I quite enjoyed the narrative. I especially enjoyed the care with which Wade handled his daughter, refusing to alter her memories, and getting a house opposite hers to be close to her.

*Trigger Warnings* Mention of depression.

Czytanie komiksów poza kolejnością i bez kontekstu nigdy nie kończy się dobrze. Tu sytuację dodatkowo pogorszyły naprawdę brzydkie rysunki i kulejące tłumaczenie.
Jednak pozostanę przy filmowym Deadpoolu :P

I know a lot of superheroes/antiheroes/villains have messed up back stories, but man. Deadpool has one of the shittiest, in my opinion. I know his character is mostly used for shenanigans and laughs, but sometimes his backstory gets really miserable.

This felt a little all over the place. Not sure if it had anything to do with the Original Sin arc because I still haven't read that. Anyway, the art made this all seem darker somehow?

I also just felt really really bad for Dazzler because she was taken out of her timeline for no real reason, it seemed.

I know DP takes care of Ellie because of Hawkeye v. Deadpool but I don't know anything else about her.

This was just okay.

This reader is ever a fan of the Deadpool interpretations that involve both his trademark off-the-wall humor AND some relatable heart from his unfortunate background. Original sin attempts to be that--from the writers who brought us Deadpool Volume 3: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. (Which I personally loved.)

The storyline is a bit disjointed, starting out with Deadpool aiding his new bride in a war with Dracula's vampiric forces--for which he does a bit of time-hopping to get Dazzler's assistance in eradicating the undead. (Eat your heart out, Blade.) If that sounds exceptionally random, then at least you're braced for it coming off that way in execution. This plotline is left dangling as Agent Preston, who has meanwhile been following leads on Deadpool's lost daughter, calls him for help as the child is abducted.

Preston was a grand highlight, coming into her own as one of SHEILD's finest rather than relegated to the extra voice in Deadpool's head (who I came to root for as NOT being a schizophrenic manifestation of his long-repressed common sense.) She's a strong, unorthodox female character and a kickbutt edition to the unwitting (and sometimes unwilling) "family" Deadpool has accidentally collected.

Outside of Agent Preston, there weren't a lot of stand-out moments. While there were a few chuckle-worthy one-liners, Deadpool spent most of the time somewhat-reasonably subdued. The plot simply didn't live up to the degree of poignancy and hilarity of The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly. And I'm sorry to say I didn't care much for the artwork this time around--as human faces seemed a bit too inconsistent from frame to frame.

While my overall impression was fairly bland, I will say that I loved the "pull my finger" final scene. I nearly tacked on an extra half-star just for that gem of an experience. ^_^

The absolute best Deadpool stories, many of which are by this creative team, have to do two things extremely well: they have to be full of fresh jokes, and they have to have heart. That second part may be the most important. The endless pile of Deadpool schlock out there is mostly devoid of heart, and half the time it's just recycled references and a smattering of the word "chimichanga." Luckily, Posehn & Duggan seem to be trying hard to walk that tightrope of comedy and pathos, and they're successful a lot of the time.

In this particular instance, the "heart" part of that equation just didn't quite get me. Don't get me wrong, it's there. This is a story about Deadpool trying to save/reconnect with his long-lost daughter, so it's naturally going to contain some actual human emotion. The fact that this daughter was made up out of thin air about 12 issues ago, though, really prevents it from ever feeling like it "matters." It's pretty much impossible to really care about the girl, and it's even harder to believe that Deadpool does. So, I just couldn't get into this one as much as.

That said, the comedy's there. Having real comedy writers tackle Deadpool has been a character-saver for me. I was on the verge of giving up on Deadpool's lame ass forever until they took up the mantle. This book has a lot of great jokes and visual gags, so at the very least you'll be entertained by it. I just wish the same character-driven storytelling from something like Deadpool: Dracula's Gauntlet was present in this.

The current Deadpool run is probably one of the best ever. It has been great fun and full of Deadpool madness yet at the same time has managed to put a serious side to a silly character. This tie-in to the Original Sin event goes further, really pulling at the serious stuff.

When a the dead Watcher's eye explodes and reveals the secrets of the Marvel universe SHIELD agents Preston and Adsit are in the vicinity. Preston discovers that Deadpool's daughter is alive and well. The trouble is Deadpool is busily sorting out the consequences of his marriage to Shiklah and is hunting vampires. It's up to Deadpool to sort them out and rescue his daughter before it is too late.

Adsit sees Deadpool kill his own parents whilst under the control of Butler. We see this through a 90s throwback issue with 90s art and a cameo from Sabretooth. It's extremely dark as we have several pages of no speech as Deadpool explores his childhood home and then blows it up, killing his parents. This individual issue is superb.

The trouble with the main story here is that the vampire stuff distracted from the main plot. Revealing the secrets to SHIELD agents rather than Deadpool himself is a smart move as it allows us to have the serious alongside the silly from Deadpool, but it just takes far too long for the title character to be properly involved.

I think it is a real achievement that Duggan and Posehn have successfully given us some proper character development for Deadpool. A must read for fans of the character and I am excited about where the writers will take the story from here.

As usual for a Marvel event, the tie-ins are much better than the main series. In this Original Sin volume, Deadpool's friends Agents Preston and Adsit are present for the Watcher's sin-exposing eye explosion (a sentence you can only write in comic books) and discover some horrible truths about everyone's favourite Merc. Meanwhile, Deadpool's off fighting vampires with a time displaced Dazzler, but this story gets dropped pretty hard as soon as Deadpool realises what Preston has discovered - the Original Sin tie-in works really well in terms of the ongoing plotline for Deadpool to do with his memory loss, and the volume overall is solid in terms of story, but the vampire storyline really goes nowhere, plus Deadpool's new wife Shiklah is barely present. John Lucas' artwork is also not the most impressive, with everyone being a little too wobbly for my liking. The 90's flashback issue is excellent however, with everything you love to hate about the 90s present, and once again servicing the main storyline whilst being an enjoyable read on its own.

Córka Deadpool'a żyje.

Myślę też, że Shiklah jakąkolwiek potworzycą by była, to chciała by poznać córkę swojego męża...

I really enjoyed the story of this volume. I usually dread big cross over events because that stuff usually affects the ongoings I’m currently reading and I feel very lost. But Posehn and Dugan do a really great job of giving the broad strokes of what’s going on in Original Sin and they tell a really cool story with Wade. The bombshell of Eleanor being alive and the absolute mayhem that ensues in Wades efforts to protect her. The BIGGER bombshell that the explosion from The Watchers eye showed Adsit a memory of Wade murdering his parents. Oh the drama! And another inventory issue that I quite liked. There’s humor of course and I love the art for this issues specifically the coloring. But underneath all of that is a really dark story about Wade being so brainwashed by Butler that he doesn’t even REALIZE he’s murdering his family. It’s heartbreaking learning more and more about the torture Wade endured over the years. It really adds depth to the whole Merc with a Mouth shtick

Collects Deadpool (2012) issues #29-34

I read the first volume, and then skipped to this volume because I received it as a gift. I haven't read much Deadpool titles, and while I sometimes like him in group stories, I don't typically like him in his own book. Since I was missing out on the relational dynamics, as well as the story being told in Volumes #2-5, I didn't enjoy this reading experience too much. I don't think it is the creators' fault, though. I was just totally out of the loop, and Deadpool isn't a character that really resonates with me.

This story is an "Original Sin" tie-in, and Dazzler makes a cameo.

Ugh. I did not like the art in this. The gestures were weird and the line work made everybody look like they were made of melting wax.

In this ham-handed Original Sin tie-in, Agent Preston gets a convenient vision of where Deadpool's daughter is while Agent Adsit gets a vision of Deadpool killing his parents. At first, Deadpool would rather fight vampires with Dazzler, but eventually he completely abandons her to finally look into the whole daughter-being-alive situation.

This is capped off with a '90's flashback issue which is visually a perfect parody of that era. Even though the '90's art should seem crappy, it was so much nicer to look at than the art in the rest of the book.

"adsit... DeadPool must NEVER know." (P. 144). The main charactor is Deadpool. This book takes place in a fictinal city. What happends in this book is DeadPool's daughter is in danger so he has to protect her. The story takes place in presant time and in one point he goes back in time. yes i would recommend this book to a person who likes comic books and superheros. The major theme of this book i fell like it would be, never push people away.

This volume ameliorated my complaints with the previous one, namely that the storyline had gone completely off the rails with regard to the overall arc. This volume brought us squarely back to focusing on Deadpool’s [redacted] and introduced a stunning bit of backstory I’m very excited to see play out in the next few volumes. Also included some laugh out loud funny moments which is always great.

Largely mediocre. I'm not convinced by the entire premise of this long-lost daughter storyline. The stuff with Deadpool's parents is actually much more promising, to the point where the daughter isn't needed at all. I've complained about the now-obligatory retro issues, but this 90s flashback here is actually pretty good, and includes the best laughs of the entire collection.

Typical Deadpool, which means, funny, bloody, outrageous, and dark. In this series we meet Deadpool's daughter and find out how his parents died (he killed them, but it wasn't his fault and he doesn't remember).

Also digging the plus-sized android SHIELD agent, except when her face got blown off. She was definitely less attractive without a face, unless you have a Terminator fetish.

Great art, great story. In this volume we have Agent Preston trying to find Deadpool's daughter. There is also ongoing war with Dracula, leading to a team-up with Dazzler, and a "retro" comic guest starring Sabretooth and Alpha Flight. If you're a fan of Deadpool check this one out.
