Kate Brian is the author of the SHADOWLANDS TRILOGY (SHADOWLANDS, HEREAFTER & ENDLESS), as well as the New York Times bestselling PRIVATE and PRIVILEGE series, and the wildly popular MEGAN MEADE'S GUIDE TO THE MCGOWAN BOYS. She also writes teen fiction under the name Kieran Scott.
Even though this series has never been realistic, it was nevertheless entertaining and intriguing, keeping me looking forward to the new installment. But now this series has gone from unrealistic to downright ridiculous.
Reed has turned into a one-woman circus. She attracts jerks, jealous psychos, murderers and stalkers like moths to a flame. I am considering abandoning this series, something that I hadn't considered before, that's how bad things have gotten. I'll await the third installment of the "Privilege" series. At least that one shows some potential.

Title Suspicion (Private, Book 10) Author Kate Brian Reviewed By Purplycookie
I normally never flag my reviews as having spoilers because I normally avoid them like the plague. I hate, hate, HATE having anything ruined -- or even mildly tainted -- by having foreknowledge of it. But for the tenth book in the Private series, I have to make an exception. It sucked so hard I know I can't help but give specifics in explaining my hatred for it, particularly given that I have always been a fan of this series and generally rate it highly.
I was no great fan of the ninth book (Paradise Lost), and was chagrined that this tenth one finds the Billings Girls still on St. Barths, along with a crew of indistinguishable meanies and hangers-on (who the eff is West?) and the completely not-believable love interest, Upton Giles (am I the only woman on earth who could give a rat's about British accents?!). I talked in my review of the ninth book about my hatred of vacation books, but this one really pushes it.
If you've read others in this series you know that they usually begin with the action from the previous book having finished, even if it ended in a cliffhanger (e.g., at the end of book 8, Sabine had pulled a gun on Reed -- and at the beginning of book 9, we're well past that and looking back on it). This one, however, picks up right where we left off, with Reed treading water having been pushed off the back of a boat. We get several chapters' worth of treading water, and it's as interesting as it sounds.
Believe it or not, this one goes downhill from there -- there's the usual Private stuff, paranoia, shoulders coiling, rich people throwing elaborate parties at a moment's notice, 16-year-olds never being carded -- but it reaches it's bottom when for like 1/3 of the book (and this one is really short! Not to mention the binding feels a bit cheaper, in spite of being the same price as usual) Reed is kidnapped and stuck on a deserted island.
Her crappy Blue Lagoon-esque existence not only stretches the limits of believability, it is also beyond tedious. I was honestly getting worried the book was going to finish out that way, and the beginning of book 11 would have her still on the gd island (since to date the series had always run in 4-book story arcs).
Mercifully, we finish this plot arc in its entirety (and get hints of the next one) within this book. However, we don't do it without making older women look like crazy sexual predators (cougars have officially infiltrated YA) and with having to go through pages and pages of the other characters' tired reactions (we should have believed you, someone was really trying to kill you, etc).
Also I have to say -- and I've implied this in earlier reviews -- I am sick to death of Reed as a character. Every, every man she meets falls in love with her, in spite of her having no clear positive personal qualities except regularly being justified in her paranoia and apparently, based on this book, being relatively resourceful as a result.
But seriously, rich men are not waiting their whole lives for women from "a different world than the one [they:] know." They are waiting for women who are hot, stupid, will have commitment-free sex with them, and when it's time for commitment, will sign any pre-nup, no matter how draconian. Every time Reed has some Thomas flashback and yet another guy tells her he'll slow things down as much as she needs, I'm worried my eyes will never stop rolling.
ALL OF THAT SAID, the plot for the next book seems semi-promising, and since they'll be back at school, I think I'll read it. I've liked this series too well to let a hideous two-book vacation arc kill it for me, so I feel I need to give it a second -- no actually this would be third chance.
Again, I have always hated vacation books, but I'm pretty sure I would have found this plot to stretch the limits of plausibility no matter where they were.
ALSO -- got to love how the center girl on the cover is VERY CLEARLY wearing the same bracelet the new Ariana is on the cover of the second Privilege book, Beautiful Disaster. I don't know if it's cost-cutting or a lazy stylist, but um embarrassing much?

love love love the private series. they have to be my favorite teen non-fantasy/paranormal series.i love the dark air they have about them, it makes them different from a typical "mean girl" series. kate brian does a wonderful job. i was soooo overjoyed when i saw this book sitting on the bookstore shelf, excpet for the fact if was short ): but i really liked this book, i love that the attempts on Reed's life were more dangerous and more succesful than they have been in the past, with the person trying to kill her being an adult. i love the whole kidnapped thing. escpecially her hallucinations. i think the most touching moment in the WHOLE series was the part when she was leaving the island. " As the helicopter lurched forward, flying low over the darkend water I looked back at the island at my beach. I could have sworn i saw Thomas standing there in his white T-shirt smiling at me as he waved goodbye" i think my heart sighed a little. it was just so damn touching. definatly made the book more deep. i think thats going to be my favorite part in the WHOLE series. I also think that Upton is my favorite for Reed. I just love them together and i think that you get a different side of Reed with him. that and the fact that he's enlish. LOVE english guys. Also, the relationship between Noelle and Reed is someting i wish for all girls(and pretty much everyone on this planet i guess) who live on the earth to have. Its so stong and looking out for each other just makes it stronger. my heart sighs and their friendship too. its one every girl should have.
this book was amzaing and probably makes one of my faves of the series. and Noelle is going to absolutly flip out with the whole Billings-is- gone-thing.
Suspicion is about how Reed was rescued after being thrown off the boat litterally. She tries to prove that Poppy tried to kill her since she hates her, she learns about Uptons past affair with a older women. She get's kidnapped and put onto a deserted island on while she's holding on to her life she becomes delusional and thinks she sees her dead ex Tommy. In the end the killer didn't turn out to be Poppy since they came to the realization that she's not smart enough, it was someone no one ever expected. I'm giving it a text-to-text because it reminds me of the Pretty Little Liars series. With all the killings and no one knowing who it is plus there all rich. the only diffrence is that the girls in Private go to a boarding school. Best friends betraying bestfriends and killers pltting there next kill. I gaveit 5 stars becuase of the cliff hanger in the last book. Then only thing that ran through my mind was is Reed dead? Did Poppy really try to kill Reed? Since Ariana could do it and Poppy obviously hates Reed since Upton chose Reed over Poppy. It was perfect!
Ok this is where the series ends for me, I won’t be continuing. This just took a while new turn. I feel this series is plot on top of plot, nothing is consistent from the start or building from the start. The whole kidnapping thing, because Reed was dating toy boy Upton, was just bleh! Her hallucinations etc on the island were also just cringe worthy. Then the cliffhanger being Billings being pulled down, I am done!

Suspicion begins where Paradise Lost ended. Reed is mysteriously pushed off a yacht during a party and is treading water. She's eventually rescued by Sawyer and later taken to the hospital for observation. Terrified that someone tried to kill her, she immediately decides to go home. However, Noelle talks her into staying for the remainder of their vacation. During this time, Reed's life is threatened again, she learns the secret that Upton has been keeping and the reader learns the identity of the person who wants Reed out of the picture.
I have to say this edition to the Private series was my least favorite. I thought it was mostly "a filler" book and found myself struggling to stay focused while reading. The saving grace was the last chapter when Reed and her friends returned to Easton Academy from winter break. The unexpected has happened to their beloved Billings House. Most importantly, there's a new student starting at Easton. Which will make for quite an interesting semester for Reed. Scandal, book eleven will be released on March 9, 2010.
The first two books of this series were actually not bad, the drama was believable, and the plot lines were fresh. Fast forward to Suspicion and all of that is gone. The same basic and totally farfetched plotline that applies to the last seven books is back again. The only reason I read this book in the first place was because I wanted to know how the series ends. For the next book I'm going to save myself the painstaking effort of reading the whole thing and just look up the summary on Wikipedia.
I have no idea why the author felt like we needed another Private book set on an island where people are trying to kill Reed, and yet here we are. This book was literally a repeat of everything I hated about the previous book, which is super disappointing. I'm hoping that the next book gets things back on track.

My book is about how this girl Reed is on a island with her friend and her boyfriend celebrating new years sense there going back to collage and not because able to see each other. Reed keeps have near death experiences which she decides to notice that some one is trying to kill her. by jerking her jet ski so it fails. and kidnapping her also leaving her on a island for 6 days without food and water. when she got kidnapped she was on the way to have her first time with her boyfriend Upton Giles but as she went onto a boat to go to anther island to meet up with him the captain with a fake beard knocked her out and threw her down some stairs then left her on an island. She got away from the kidnappers but one eat a poisoned apple and two by hitting him crossed the head. after that they found who was trying to to all of this to her and put her away. she was doing this to Reed because he and Reeds boyfriend had some kind of sexually relationship and wanted to keep it that way by getting rid of Reed. when her plan didn't work and she got ut away Reed recovered and with back to her home town and went to college with her best friends Noelle and her guy best friend sawyer when is new to that school this year.

took us long enough to figure out whose been bothering reed and i mean i loved upton through and through throughout the whole book, i mean he means wells and tries to be a good guy but he just has this messed up past being a womanizer :/ however these books are beginning to become repetitive, same old plot line --> some one is out to get reed and she tells her friends that someone is stalking her they don't believe her that is until some drastic things happen to her they realize that she is right. I enjoyed the first four books with our old characters when things were a bit more believable, things now are more ridiculous.....however im determined to finish this series
I read this in the Caribbean, where the majority of this book takes place, so that was really cool. As far as the story goes, this one was crazy. Poor Reed. She’s been through so much in 10 books, and there’s more to come. I really liked seeing a sweeter side of Noelle in this one, and I liked getting to know Sawyer better as well.
Also - I was lying on the beach reading about Reed’s horrible sunburn....only to end up horribly sunburned myself!
When I was sent this book to review, I wasn’t too sure if I would enjoy it. The Private series is aimed at the fans of Gossip Girl, and from what I’ve heard about Gossip Girl, I’m pretty sure it’s not my time type of thing; I’m not one for popular, superficial girls, it just doesn’t entertain me. I thought I would give Suspicion a go anyway, to see if I would be surprised. Unfortunately, I wasn’t.
Suspicion is the 11th book in the Private series, but it’s readable as a standalone; the plot is self-contained, and even though you come across characters that have obviously been in the previous books, and events from previous books are mentioned, but if you can over look that you don’t know about these things being referred to as they’re not entirely important to this story, it’s fine.
However, I just didn’t enjoy it. I wasn’t all that interested in the main character Reed, and found her to be too wrapped in things I personally find very young and unimportant; for example, several times she wonders why one of her exes, who now has a girlfriend, hasn’t gotten in touch with her while she’s on holiday with the girls, even though she’s with someone new herself. There were just a lot of eye-rolling moments for me, and I didn’t relate to anyone. They were the type of people I avoided when I was at school; not necessarily the nasty girls, but just the type I had nothing to say to, and vice versa.
Despite the superficiality, there are some moments where I thought “Ahh, now we’re getting somewhere!” Unfortunately, they’d last a few pages, and then Reed would be back amongst her friends, or she would go to extremes about the things that were going to happen. Even though she was in quite considerable danger at some points, I found her damsel-in-distress ways a little grating. I guess I’m just used to stronger protagonists.
This is not to say the book isn’t good. It’s not awful at all, it’s just not my cup of tea. I’m sure there are a fair amount of people who would really enjoy Suspicion. It’s the type of book I think would work well as holiday reading, on a beach somewhere. It’s not a long book at all, I started and finished it today, and for its length, a fair amount happens. There is suspense and there is danger, pretty much like a sinister Mean Girls, and those moments kept me reading to find out exactly what was going on, despite not being a huge fan of the characters. I’ve got to say, I really liked Sawyer though, he was just a sweetie! Upton wasn’t too awful either, though I found him too English; the phrases he used aren’t something you would hear every day over here – but then again he is rich, and so probably posh. I don’t come across many posh Englishmen.
Overall, I think Suspicion would be a pretty awesome book for those who like stories about the Queen Bees of school, with some hot guys, parties, and a bit of danger thrown in. A quick, easy read for a quickie fix of lipgloss and attempted murder.
In the tenth novel of the Private series, you can't help but to feel very sympathetic to poor Reed. Who isn't out to get her these days?
After a wild New Year's bash thrown in honor of Sawyer's life saving abilities, Reed has some after party plans with Upton Giles. He leaves early to get everything prepared, and sends a chartered boat to take Reed back to the island. Except, all goes wrong, and Reed ends up in the middle of a kidnapping plot, and stranded on a deserted island.
Kate Brian's addictive writing keeps the pages turning, and the suspense rolling. Compared to Paradise Lost, this is a step up in the right direction and Brian leaves you hanging yet again with quite an interesting cliffhanger regarding the Billings Girls'. I definitely cannot wait for Scandal, to see how the plot develops...
Highlights: Description (Brian always has me feeling like I'm there), the writing, the mystery. Figuring out the villain was, as always, the best part. I also loved how protective Noelle became over Reed, keeping an eye on her.
Lowlights: Seeing as this is the tenth novel, I'm getting a little annoyed with Reed, and how she's always snagging a guy and a crazy ex-girlfriend. The plot feels overdone. Yet, I love the writing, and unlike with other series I given up, I can't quite leave the Private series alone. Curiosity always draws me in, as well as the writing.
I didn't know a thing about this series going into it. My boyfriend (now husband) would always go to the library to pick up books for me and he stumbled across this series and brought me the first book, thinking I would enjoy it. /// Well he was right lol. /// I was instantly hooked and reserving the next book within 24 hours. /// This series is definitely not realistic and is pretty dramatic lol , but it's lots of fun and it was the first time I'd ever read anything like this before. /// It went places I would of never thought. /// I know it looks super cheesy, and maybe it is to an extent lol, but the story is pretty good actually and kept me interested. /// There are a lot of books in this series but it's so easy to read through and very enjoyable. /// I recommend! Check this series out!
Despite the appealing plot, the story went nowhere. Also, surprisingly boring despite the supposedly "shocking" twists. Nothing more than a filler, hence the length of the book.
I decided to read this book as I was walking through the library trying to find a new novel to read when this one caught my eye. I kept on walking and with no luck on finding another one, I went back and grabbed this book. The blurb on the back wad very interesting and led me wanting to know more.
I liked this book as it left me on lots of cliff-hangers and kept me hooked. Throughout the novel I was constantly wondering who it was that was after Reed, and it definitely wasn’t who I thought it was. I was attached to this book for three days, never wanting to put it down, waiting for more clues as to who the attacker was. It was very interesting and full of suspense, always leaving me on the edge of my seat.
Something new that I learnt from ‘Suspicion’ was that whenever we are in an unfamiliar place we should always be careful of our surroundings and people that we can trust. Reed was in the Caribbean with her friends and someone was after her, trying to kill her. Unfortunately, Reed gave them lots of opportunities to kidnap her, despite being with her boyfriend. Luckily for Reed, she managed to get out of those situations alive. It really made me think about when I am out with my friends I should always be careful and aware of what is going on around me and not trust people that I don’t know. I think this is a very important message that lots of people should acknowledge and take into consideration when they are out and about.
My favourite character in this book was Reed. Reed is the protagonist in this novel and is an average teenager. She was on vacation with her friends when she noticed that someone was after her. They made it obvious that they wanted Reed dead when they pushed her off the boat she was on with her friends. Despite all this, Reed kept strong and managed to stay alive throughout all these attempted murders. She never gave up hope when she was stranded on an island and managed to find things she needed to survive. She had great friends that always had her back when it came to who was after her.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and although it was very short and did not take me long to read it was very interesting and kept me hooked the whole time. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants a quick, easy book to read or likes mysterious novels.
Welp, this is now my least favorite. Not only does it feel pointless but it also is the absolutely most ludicrous (which is saying something), mainly because it defies the actual biological reality of life
After the last book, I started this right away and finished it in one sitting. Unfortunately, my Libby does not have the rest of this series, and this book had me okay with not purchasing the rest. The beginning was a continuation of the last book with Reed in her troubles. She learns a lot about her situation. At the end of this, it's back to the academy with a big surprise happening, but I felt like it could just end there and I don't feel like I am missing out on the last books of this series as I do not want to get disappointed in this series and I just don't know what more could happen without feeling like this series is dragging on, so I decided to not purchase the last books as Libby does not offer them. If Libby did offer them, I would probably continue and risk being disappointed just to see, but I am content with ending this series here.
Would I recommend? Not to everyone, only if they are looking for an easy YA contemporary series with drama and mystery.
This.Book.was.so.good I’m not too sure why people are being so negative but I guess everyone has their preferences. I finished this book in a couple sittings if that tells you anything. It was extremely addicting and you won’t even see what’s coming. I loved all the books before this one but THIS. This was was just AMAZING. Everything about this book was so good I couldn’t put it down. It made a complete 180 from all the other books before this. If I could give this book 6/5 stars I would. 💫 Highly recommend!!!
Upton was such a nice change! A boy Reed likes that I actually liked. Past and all. And Reed actually has a lot of backbone in this novel. It is refreshing. Even her maturity with how her and upton end things is commendable. Just please don't go back to josh.

I used to love this series when I was in middle school, so Im gonna give it 3 stars. The main character wasn’t an interesting character at all. But I guess the mystery, drama & scandal was what kept me reading 😆 However, the prequel (book of spells) was full of shit that I hated it even then.
Absolutely ridiculous but that’s why I love this series. It’s ironic that I said in my last review that Reed needs security when she nearly died four times in 200 or so pages LOL. Reed Brennan, I still think you’re stupid but props for being a survivor. 👏🏾

I LOVE UPTON! I love the accent and how he changed for Reed! I read this in audible and am so sad that the rest of the books aren’t there as well because I need to know if Josh ends up finding out about reeds new bf or how her and gram and his brother (can’t spell his name) know each other!
This one kept the drama going and delivered some decent twists, but it felt a little slower compared to earlier books in the series. The mystery is still intriguing, and I like how things are gradually unraveling, but it didn’t quite have that same unputdownable energy.
Some character decisions felt repetitive, and parts of the plot didn’t move forward as much as I expected. Still, it was entertaining enough to hold my interest and makes me want to see how it all wraps up. Solid, but not a standout.
