This book tells the story of a Soviet IS-2 tank, nicknamed "This machine kills fascists", which has endured more than half a century of major conflicts. It all begins in the Soviet Union during the Second World War, when Sergei Suvarov, an idealistic engineer, designs a revolutionary tank that is both robust and formidably efficient. This tank, a symbol of Soviet power, took part in the Battle of Berlin in 1945. It becomes an integral part of the story, witnessing - and sometimes acting in - the upheavals of the 20th century.
Over time, the tank changed hands and causes. In 1956, it was used against the insurgents in Budapest, then recovered by the Cubans during the attempted invasion of the Bay of Pigs in 1961. It was then used in Angola and eventually sold on the black market.
Finally, the tank reappeared in 2001 in the mountains of Tora Bora, in Afghanistan, during the hunt for Taliban and al-Qaeda fighters. There, in a final act, it is used as a relic of the past, obsolete but charged with an important memory. Each era and conflict reveals a different facet of the machine, a difficult-to-master technology of warfare between tool of liberation and domination and terror.
I randomly picked this one up while killing time in a FNAC in Asturias. This copy was obviously in Spanish as I don't read a word in French but the mobile app didn't offer any alternative editions,so here it is.
This machine kills fascists goes from the Kirov tank factory where the maincharacter, an IS-2 is the 500th one built. Then we get to see how it takes its crew from the frozen Soviet Union to Hungary to Cuba to Angola (unless I got mistaken again) to Afganistan. Very fascinating all in all, I was captivated for the time it took me to read it in a language I'm very far from being fluent in.
