I'm so happy with everything that had happened in this volume! I can't believe that the next volume is the last one in this series! It's crazy that I am almost done this awesome series. I had so much fun reading it and I am so satisfied with how everything is so far! The character development and the way that everything ended up is so detailed.
"I'm no expert, but I think people mope when their expectations are too high. It's tiring when you always have to overachieve. Don't overdo it. Just work on achieving what you can."
Shizuku is a studybug who cares up keeping her grades up. In her free time, she studies and works hard like her mother. Haru is a guy who got suspended on the first day of school and hasn't returned since then. Shizuku's job is to give Haru his homework and convince him to come back to school. After these two meet, they felt this connection with each other and believed that they were no longer alone. Meeting new friends, having fun and sharing smiles, these two walk on a path that is unforgettable.
The character development is clearly shown in this volume. The characters are so mature and understand each other. They act on their own while getting support from others. They don't hesitate to go to their friends if they need to talk. And most importantly, they understand that they don't need to deal with everything by themselves, while having supporting friends around them. I am so happy with seeing all of these transformations in the characters, from the first volume til now.
Shizuku is great, she realized so many things through out her years in high school, as did Haru. Natsume is accepting her feelings and learning that although you are heartbroken, you can always move on. Sasayan is always looking out for his friends and doesn't lie about how he feels about something. Yamaken supports everyone, even if it doesn't help him in any way. Iyo is an okay character, I laugh when she's with her brother. Micchan is a great guy, I just wish he doesn't put himself down because he is a little older than the others.
I am so excited to read the next volume and move onto other manga. I can't wait to read more, I am hoping to read Carry On really soon.
Such a beautiful ending!!! I'm just so happy that I got to live this bizarre youthful journey. The montage of events on their third year of high school was so wholesome that I wish I could revisit it as a movie. On top of it all, Shizuku's character development was everything I could ask for! And the friendships that they made!! Oh, and how Shizuku trained Nagoya when Haru was away, that was so hilarious!
*sniffles and sighs in happiness* Ah, and so it ends, in the most perfect way you can ever imagine. I just cried, it was that beautiful. So many feels! Dang, I was worried about the ending for a bit, but now, wow. *sniffles some more* Perfect! 5+ stars for this volume!
I will keep this one short, as there is a lot of stuff that gets wrapped up in the end, couples get formed, school is finished, and a certain stuff is said and done, and I want everyone to go in this one fresh and without any knowledge. :D (Yeah, I am mean like that at times, muahahaha.)
This manga concludes the My Little Monster series, it has been 12 volumes, and for the English version, 2 years of delicious story telling and gorgeous art. Yes, there will be a 13th volume, though I am not sure what is in there. From Wikipedia it seems to be a bonus volume, but the story is completed with this volume. But I hope some scenes will be included in that special. I think people know what scene we would all just love to see.
The manga starts at the normal pace, but then things happen, and while normally a year takes a long time in the manga, this time we see the highlights, and end up at graduation. Yep, that is right, we are at the graduation time! Did all of the characters make it? Who is doing the speech? I have to say I love Iyo-san, normally I think she is one annoying character, but she really showed a different side in this one.
Shizuku really has changed. She is still a bit stoic, but less than first. She is happier, enjoys her life, has friends, a boyfriend and so much more. I just loved seeing her change. And not only her. Haru also changed. From scary and misunderstood to studious, making easy friends, having a girlfriend and doing what he wants to do. And not only them, but other characters also grew so much, it is amazing, I just remember when we just started with this series and how they all were, they are so different in this last volume.
I loved the romance, though I wish there was a bit more of it.
Thanks to the author for also making a 3 and a half years later part, I loved that one! Plus that story that followed after that one. Yay!
All in all this is a series I would highly recommend. The art is gorgeous, great characters, interesting story. Definitely read this series!
Why are manga endings always so... abrupt? Like they always try to get as much things they can in the last volume. It was still pretty good. Obviously (bc this is manga) Haru left and Shizuku lived her life without him like it was something normal to not have contact with your boyfriend when he is away. Then Haru came back and they kept dating with no problems (which in fact was nice but unrealistic) We never knew why Iyo fears Yamaken. I felt like the story of Haru and his brother was incomplete and I would like to see more of his dad. Also his cousin didn't appear at all in the last volumes but I thought he would appear more in this one, since he was a recurrent character at the beginning but well. Besides all of that it was a cute ending, loved the bonus/last scenes three years later in only a few pages you could see that their relationship had developed and it was really cute to see them in that way. Nice reading I really enjoyed it! Still low key team Yamaken haha but I ended up liking the relationship between Haru and Shizuku and I think that at the end they do fit together bc they grew and learned together (as it should be)
I devoured this series in 2 days. It's 13 volume's and it's the cute love story between Mizutani and Haru. Along the way they have challenges but overcome them. They are joined by a group of friends along the way on their adventures. The story is sweet it was totally binge worthy as I read them all in a little over 48 hours.
The author has created beautiful artwork to match the adorable story. This is a perfect slice of life romance manga. With great characters it was easy to be captivated by their story. I love how the series ended and highly recommend if you enjoy manga.
I can't contain myself!! Aaaahhh!! The series got over in a blink of an eye!! Eeeekk! This series couldn't have ended in a better way. Last two chapters were so amazing, it was just scenes and no dialogs... it was like glancing over the whole third year of fun! so amazing!! It reminded me of my high school days! In the end, Haru and Shizuku made up, Yuuzan and Haru had a talk and everyone decided on what they wanted to do after graduation... it was all so merry! haha! (*^‿^*) Haru going for tuna fishing and studying in the middle of the sea for a year was the best idea. Shizuku changed a lot from volume 1. Aaaahh!! I have no words I just have no words!! It was a happy ending!! I love happy ending!! At one point though I thought this wouldn't have a happy ending, and at another point, I thought how will the mangaka end this... I mean, it had the potential to go on and on and on... but it's good that it ended and mangaka didn't decide on stretching the story and bleeding the characters for long. This is the second last volume. The next volume will be about other characters. the whole series mostly ends in this volume but the next one is the real end. We have yet to know about many things and I think all the questions will be answered in the next volume.
I finished the whole series in just a shorter amount of time than I had expected it to. Yes, this is that good, and I feel that I had to write a review when I am done reading it. First off, Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun is absolutely one of the most beautiful mangas I have ever read! This is one of those mangas that is so heart warming and relateable. You can feel as though you can understand the thoughts and feelings of the characters. I liked how the story was not only focused on the love story between the two main leads. This series is so much more than a shoujo manga, it also deals with learning about life, valuing friendship, overcoming challenges and finding your own identity. This is how high school life and romance should be written, since it has utterly captured the beauty and the struggles of it. The character development was brilliant and every single one of them was my favourite. The art was also amazing and it kept on getting better with each volume. Moreover, the final volume was really special, and I just loved how it ended so perfectly that I would not have preferred a better and more touching ending than this.
Like all the stories I have finished reading, I am quite sad that this series has to end. It was great, fun and unique in its own way. I thoroughly enjoyed reading every page of it. I could have wished for more chapters since I want to see more of it. Oh, and the anime was awesome as well! :) I am definitely going to miss Mitty and Haru-chan!
I've gotten fed up with tsundere characters so I went out to test/read more of this other subtype known as kuudere (google: kuu "cool" + dere "lovestruck"; literally: cold and emotionless characters that slowly show their feelings). A quick google search of top rated/favorited ones included this (and Akuma to Love Song, which I stopped reading a loooong way back and must re-read again soon) so I did.
And I am pleased. Very pleased. One of the reasons why I stopped reading shoujo mangas is because of MCs that bottle everything up. I don't like it when there's a problem, but there's also an easy solution for that -- such as talking. Like c'mon, talk it over, dudes.
Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun was such a breath of fresh air from all that mess. It was light, fluffy, and giddy. It was exactly what I was looking for and it took off some stress from studying during this recently concluded exam week (sidenote: fingers crossed, o pls let me pass them all). The whole story was fun; I had a blast. I have no complaints about the characters either. They're all very relatable and lovely, and it was nice seeing them all interact. Plus, there's a chicken, which I found very amusing. Talk about novel ideas for a pet. Ha.
Once again, my heart hurts. It was a really great ending. Somehow the two protagonists get each other and suit each other so well, it's hard not to root for them :P
It marvels me how astute Haru is, yet how silly he can act but I guess that's part of his charm. In some ways he kind of resembles Shizuku's dad, in that they can be emotionally aware, but practically they can be big oafs.
They've matured so much, I feel so proud of all the characters!
What a really nice ending to the story, even though there is another volume left this one was pretty much the end with the next most likely being bonus Content
I really like how you can see the difference between Shizuku in volume one to now, the others have too but she has had the biggest I feel and its great to see, makes me all happy reading it!
I'm so happy with how this one ended. All the issues I had with Haru in the first few books got fixed and you can see how all the characters grew from their friendships.
What I liked: I feel like the characters were pretty realistic. Obviously there's going to be some gag characters like Kenjis friends or Iyo and silly moments like haru running away from his brother but most (!) of the main characters acted pretty realistic for a manga. The characterisation in this is really strong, main character personalities are distinct and interesting, conflicts felt real and their motivations clear.
Specific stuff: Yuuzan and shizuku parallel was so good!!!! I want those two to be best friends so bad. I genuinely was obsessed with Yuuzan like I feel for you man. Chicken Natsume getting rejected by Micchan (even tho they made that weird joke about it later) I was so scared they were going to be set up for a relationship. Kenji-> I liked him a lot just as a character. He was determined and genuinely tried to get her to at least look at him.
What I didn't like: This manga has a lot of like violence towards women in it. Like some of it is throwaways but like Haru's dad checking out Mitty, multiple character swho's whole job is to sexually harass women, that one "stay quiet or I'll rape you" in the first volume?? I know that was a throwaway but still. Especially the sexual harassment like that was extreme. On the topic of that sexual harassment: Oh my god Natsume. Like I love her as a character but the narrative did her terrible!! Her whole character is that most guys will be creeps to her and cause issues in her friendships with other girls causing her to be isolated for years. Her literal main motivation was that she wanted friends who cared about her and wanted her around. Yet even till the last year she's stuck having to force her way into relationships, being left out when it's not convenient and even just like disrespected by everyone there. She never gets to feel secure in her relationships. She gets Haru and Mitty who never confide in her and don't really reciprocate her affections. I mean on the end Mitty called her a good friend and Haru and her seemed close at the end but we never got to see her really make relationships of her own outside the group. All of her friends she met through Haru. She literally orients her future around her 2 friends. Except no it's one friend because let me get into that:
The sasahara arc SUCKS. I don't know how everyone gets at least a bit of conclusion except fucking Natsume who is told actually you're fear of men is wrong,. you're only other consistent friend is into you and like you have to be into him now. Even though it doesn't match her character arc which is about wanting to have close and secure friendships. Even though she honestly kinda rationally is afraid of guys since basically almost every guy in this series is weird to her. OH YEAH I FORGOT ABOUT THAT. The manga uses sexual harassment as a punch line too much and no one is a better sign for that than Natsume. This girl has 4 different characters ( one of whom is an ADULT MAN) who constantly sexually harass, to the point that the sheer number of creepy things one of those guys does is a fucking gag. All fo them are gags. They're all just considered harmless and isn't it so funny? When this adult man touches her without her consent or winks at her in the mirror or when guys her age call her over to sit in their lap. It's literally a gag when Haru is missing that she gets weird guys calling her just to talk to a girl. Okay when she complains about it,.it's considered harmless good fun on behalf of the boys by the guy who is supposed to be her boyfriend!! Like genuinely I don't understand how you have a scene where she's like yeah sorry for lumping you in with word guys it's just that every guy who is into me is usually a massive creep as well or cause problems in my relationships anf it's good that we're just friends and you would never do that stuff to me. And then for him to go, no:) I'm into you :) thats why I've put up with for so long :) and then when she obviously gets made about that it's like OH YOURE DRAMATIC. UGH But then still when jr story needs someone fun or silly or peppyz she's brought in but we soon as she's done with that it's back to being the crazy woman :/.

2.5 stars? This entire volume was basically a montage, with Haru away on a research (boat?) trip for a year, and the rest of them continuing their friendships and planning out their colleges and futures.
I mean, I'm glad the series isn't stretching on for ages to cover all of this in detail, but it's not the most engaging thing to skim through.
And we STILL didn't see Mitty's mother? One glimpse of her showing up for Mitty's birthday, I think, but no interaction? Still no face? No conversations? I'm just baffled by some of the choices made by this series, and what's considered important to show or leave off the page.
I did like Haru's brother moving out to try to do more things on his own, and Haru maturing a lot and deciding what he really wanted to do with his life - and both him and Mitty understanding that they can be themselves without fearing that people will leave them for it. I really appreciated Haru telling Mitty that he's never going to abandon her over a few mean words in an argument.
But the rest was kind of typical shoujo, I guess...I'm not feeling as much of the unique magic from early in the series. It's very "high school was the best time of our lives" nostalgia, and I think I'm a bit past that stage. I would've lived fewer repetitive school festivals and more of them actually living their lives.
And some of those major life lessons just don't hit as hard when it's basically a flipbook with no dialogue 80% of the way through.
I am not really big into romance manga, especially high school romance, but this one hooked me and wouldn’t let go! I fell in love with the characters in this one, especially Haru and Shizuku. They are so unique and their romance was a great balance between heart pounding first love and learning what it means to be in a relationship, and the ups and downs that come with that. I loved how their love changed them in positive ways and how they learned to accept each other as they were and it wasn’t about changing to make the other person like you, but about understanding each other - that’s rare, especially in teen romances. Their group of friends also became dear and I felt like a part of their oddball group as they grew and faced challenges and reached goals and just had fun. I never expected to like this as much as I did, but it quickly became a favourite. I cried, laughed and felt emotional through it all and those all count as the highest praise I can give a story that touches me deeply enough to go through all those emotions. I definitely highly recommend this series, even if you’re not into romance - it might change your mind about that!
IM CRYING 🥺😭😭 I never thought that when I picked up a manga from the anime I watched when I was younger that I would get this invested in the story KDHSJWJ
I can’t even put it into words without my dumb emojis and keyboard smashing but Haru and Shizuku, although seem very tedious, we’re just a whole rollercoaster of fun! I’ve never thought that a shoujo manga could be this fun yet take as many liberties as they want!! I loved how unusual everyone was in this manga and I know there’s another volume left but that’s just to wrap things up! Like the stories we didn’t get to hear.
But AHHhhHhhH Shizuku with short hair 😳 and Haru and Shizuku being so ADORABLE I CANT JKSSVSKSH
I CANT BELIEVE I GOT TO SEE THEM GROW UP AND NOW ITS OVER *CUE MY NATSUME TEARS WHICH PROVE CROCODILE TEARS INFERIOR*
