Takes the reader behind the scenes at court to discover how the royal palaces were run, and how the courtiers passed their time. Also shows how ordinary people brought up their children, and how they regarded marriage, old age and death.
Review - I've always loved Alison Plowden's style of writing, and this one doesn't disappoint, being easy to read and clearly and concisely set out with historical sketches, portraits and photos of places highlighting what the text is telling you. Often history books can seem quite dry but Plowden I'm sure will make this period appeal to a new generation through her engaging style. Of less use for the more experienced historian who may find that they already know most of the information in the book. Also helpful if you're planning to visit any places associated with Elizabethan England, as it includes a guide at the back on what to see.
General Subject/s? - Tudors / Elizabeth I / History
I enjoyed this book but there was nothing particularly new or things that had not been discussed in other books of this period so I did skip some parts. I really enjoyed the images in this book, however. There were so many, some filling both pages and were fascinating.
This is a very interesting and informative guide to Elizabethan England, with chapters on life at court, life in London, in the countryside, on entertainments, beliefs and superstitions, science and industry, exploration, and other subjects. The book is crammed with fascinating information, and is lavishly illustrated throughout. It should be of interest to anyone who wants to know about life in the Elizabethan era.
